Chapter Fourteen #2
The head instructor nodded, clearly attuned to Jay’s passion that seemed to fill the room like the sunlight streaming through the window, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. ‘Tell me, with your amazing career at its height, why do you wish to teach here, specifically?’
‘Because this place,’ Jay gestured towards the window where small aircraft dotted the tarmac, ‘is where the heart of flying beats strongest. It’s not just about the aircraft, it’s about the community, the shared aspirations, and the magic of defying gravity.
’ His words carried a sense of wonder and reverence for his work.
‘Hmm, I like your thinking, very much.’ A broad smile finally broke the interviewer’s stern features.
Jay finally felt the ease to breathe properly.
And when the interview came to an end, he walked out of the flight school with a quiet confidence.
It felt like he had this in the bag, but he couldn’t be too confident, given there were another five applicants.
Wandering towards his car, his thoughts drifted to Zara.
He imagined her, elegant in the aisle of an aircraft.
They were both charting courses anew, with destiny giving him the chance to take the reins at home, so she could do something for herself, by herself.
She definitely deserved to. And as he started the engine and turned towards home, the bright blue sky seemed to hold endless possibilities, just waiting for the both of them to reach out and take hold.

Meanwhile, in the hubbub of Brisbane, Zara stepped into the familiar cabin of a training aircraft, her senses immediately inundated with the scent of synthetic upholstery and sanitised air.
She ran her hand over the seats, feeling the smoothness of the material beneath her fingers, and smiled at the other attendees, all there to rekindle their knowledge of the skies.
The sound of their chatter and laughter filled the cosy space, creating a sense of camaraderie she’d not realised she’d missed so much, until now.
‘Welcome back, everyone,’ the trainer greeted them, her voice crisp over the hum of the hangar outside. ‘Let’s get this ball rolling, shall we?’
Zara listened intently, absorbing every piece of new information.
Her dedication to her craft was as unyielding as the steel craft that encased them.
As the instructor demonstrated the latest safety procedures, Zara moved with grace and precision, her movements honed by years of experience yet eager for refinement.
Her focus remained steadfast as she looked towards the endless horizon she so loved — a horizon that promised adventure and whispered of the delicate dance between earth and ether.
‘Remember,’ the instructor emphasised, ‘the passengers look to you not just for service, but also for security and comfort. You’re essentially their guardian in the skies.’
Zara nodded, her eyes reflecting the weight of that responsibility and the pride she took in it as she thought of her daughters, and of the example she wanted to set — strength intertwined with compassion, independence balanced with commitment.
Almost at the eight-hour mark, broken only for lunch, the session began to wind down.
Bidding farewell to her fellow flight attendants, Zara stayed behind to ask additional questions, her notebook brimming with annotations.
She hadn’t noticed the time slipping by, nor the golden hue that now bathed the room as the sun dipped lower in the sky.
She was having fun, and time was flying.

Almost two weeks later, on a bright and sunny Monday morning, Jay stood at the threshold of the flight school, his heart pulsing with anticipation as he prepared to embark on this new journey.
As he strode inside the aircraft hangar, the scent of engine oil and ambition filled his nostrils, igniting a fire within him.
Today was not just another day in the cockpit, it was a day of transformation, of taking flight in a different way.
As he stepped into the classroom, the sunlight poured in through the large windows, casting everything in a golden glow.
Glancing around the room, he saw himself reflected in the bright eyes of his eager students.
It was the same unbridled passion that once powered his own ambitions, and he felt a sense of pride and responsibility for shaping these young minds and guiding them towards their own adventures in the sky.
‘Good morning, Mr Maverick,’ greeted a young man sitting at the front.
‘Good morning, and please, call me Jay,’ he replied with a warm smile, though his hands trembled slightly as he held onto the stack of lesson plans before him.
‘Let’s begin our journey together, shall we,’ he announced, his voice steady despite the butterflies fluttering in his stomach.
‘Not just as pilots, but as custodians of the sky.’
As the hours passed them by, each student brought their own unique story and aspirations, their restless energy palpable in the air. As Jay spoke, he wove his passion into his teaching, igniting a spark in his students. They leant forward enthusiastically, each drawn to the promise of the horizon.
‘Remember,’ he said as this part of the class came to an end, ‘flying isn’t just about controlling an aircraft, it’s also about understanding the intricate dance between earth and sky.’
Katie, a young woman with fiery red hair and a scattering of bright freckles, nodded earnestly.
She was a local girl with big dreams, determined to break free from small-town life and touch every corner of the world.
Beside her sat Amir, whose journey had spanned continents before he landed there in search of the Australian dream.
His gaze was intense and thoughtful, absorbing Jay’s words as if they were the key to unlocking the skies.
And then there was Marcus, a little older, whose laughter came easy and whose dreams had been deferred by a life spent supporting others.
He now sought to reclaim the time that had slipped like sand through his fingers.
‘Each of you brings a unique perspective,’ Jay continued, walking between the rows, making connections with each set of eyes. ‘Embrace it. Your differences are your strengths.’

‘Mummy, will you be home for my school play?’ Lily’s wide eyes filled with hope but also a touch of uncertainty.
Zara crouched down and took her daughter’s soft hands in hers. ‘I wouldn’t miss it for the world, sweetheart. So don’t you worry, because Daddy and I have it all planned out.’ She kissed Lily’s cheek. ‘Now you go and get showered, so we can read that bedtime story I promised.’
Later that evening, after tucking both girls into bed, Zara made two hot chocolates. The tendrils of steam from the mugs mingled together like her and Jay’s interwoven lives as she carried the cups out the back door and onto the verandah.
‘Mind if I join you?’ she asked as she held up the cups. ‘I come bearing gifts of pure indulgence.’
‘Do you know that you’re the best wife ever,’ Jay replied, his expression tender.
‘I do, because you tell me all the time.’ She settled beside him on the weathered swing chair that had witnessed countless sunsets and whispered secrets, and for a few breaths they simply stared out at the expanse of night sky.
‘I’ve been thinking about us and our new roles.
It’s uncharted territory, but I have faith in us, and in the strength we give each other. ’
Jay’s eyes, brimming with emotions too complex for words to capture, met hers as he reached out and took her hand in his. ‘Are you okay, my love?’
‘I feel awful, making the girls worry about whether we will be at their special events.’
‘I can adjust my schedule whenever we need to,’ Jay offered, his blue eyes reflecting the depth of his commitment. ‘The kids need you, but they also need to see their mum following her dreams.’
His beautiful words helped to ease her worries. ‘I’m scared,’ she admitted, vulnerability piercing through. ‘I worry about getting lost in all of this, about me not being enough for our daughters, or for you.’
‘Don’t be silly,’ Jay said gently, pulling her closer. ‘We’re in this together, remember? We adapt, and we support each other. You don’t have to be superwoman, especially not for me.’
‘I sometimes worry you’ll expect more from me,’ Zara said with a wistful smile. ‘And I don’t want to let you down if you do.’
‘You would never, ever, let me down.’ He gave her hands a reassuring squeeze. ‘Do you think it might be more of a case of you expecting too much from yourself?’ he countered softly. ‘Because you’ve already shown how brilliantly you can soar, Za. On your own, and with our family.’
He knew her so very well. ‘When you put it that way.’ She sighed contentedly, leaning into his warmth as they gazed at the star-studded horizon. ‘It’ll all be okay,’ she breathed out, determination steadying her voice. ‘For our daughters, and for us.’
‘Exactly.’ Jay’s embrace tightened. ‘We’ll show those little girls what it means to chase dreams without losing sight of what truly matters. Love, family, togetherness.’
‘Do you remember when we used to talk about our dreams for this life?’ Her voice was a tender whisper, her thumb tracing patterns on his hand. ‘I’m so grateful for everything we’ve built together.’
Jay turned to really look at her, and he nodded as if his heart was overflowing with emotion. ‘I never truly understood happiness until I met you, Za. You and our daughters are my world.’
‘Time has a way of revealing the beauty of our journey, doesn’t it?’ She gazed out at the endless sky, its vastness awe-inspiring.
‘Like the tides guided by the moon,’ he agreed, his voice low yet resonant with conviction. ‘We’ve certainly faced many highs and lows together, but yet here we are, still standing, united, and stronger than ever.’
She turned to meet his gaze once more. ‘It hasn’t been easy, but I wouldn’t change a single moment if it meant losing what we have now.’
He lifted their clasped hands to his lips, pressing a gentle kiss to her knuckles.
‘Every struggle, every doubt, it led us here, to a place where we aren’t just surviving, but thriving.
’ He paused, took a breath, as if steadying his emotions.
‘I wake up every day knowing I’ll see your smile and hear our daughters’ laughter, now how good is that? ’
‘Ha, you are a sweet man, Jay Maverick. And I’m sure life will continue to challenge us,’ she stated with fierce determination. ‘But as long as we have each other, there’s nothing we can’t face.’
‘Absolutely nothing,’ he agreed.
She could feel the truth of their words resonating in her soul as they sat in comfortable silence for a little while. ‘Look at us,’ she finally whispered, a sense of wonder infusing her tone. ‘Falling more and more in love every day.’
‘Damn straight, and here’s to our next chapter.’ Jay softly squeezed her hand. ‘To a love that grows stronger with every passing day. To our daughters, who’ll learn to pilot their own adventures. And to us, flying through the endless skies of our dreams.’
‘To us,’ Zara repeated, her voice filled with reverence.
They shared a look of unspoken understanding — two souls, bound by an all-encompassing love as vast as the ocean, embarking on a journey they had never expected but were ready to embrace.
They remained suspended in a moment outside of time, where the only reality was their shared heartbeat and the eternal dance of the starlit sky before them, setting the stage for whatever tomorrow would bring.
And in the weeks that followed, Jay discovered a newfound joy in teaching that he’d never experienced as a pilot.
His students’ successes became his own, and every milestone a shared triumph.
He witnessed the spark of passion ignite in the eyes of strangers who’d become his protégés.
And Zara, too, found balance between the skies and the home they cherished.
With each flight, her confidence grew, and her laughter became more frequent and carefree with her passengers.
And when they were home together, their evenings were spent recounting tales of their day, laughter filling their cosy living room.
‘Life is strange,’ Zara mused one night, snuggled against Jay’s side, as they lay entangled on the couch.
‘Strange, unpredictable, but beautiful,’ Jay agreed, pressing a kiss to her forehead. ‘Especially with you by my side.’
‘Thank you,’ she whispered, her voice thick with gratitude and love. ‘For being the best husband ever.’ It was in these moments that she found solace in their unity, and in the give and take that defined their marriage.

Two days later, Zara glided gracefully down the aisle of the Boeing aircraft, her uniform crisp and her smile unwavering.
It was a dance she’d performed countless times before with ease and grace, but today it held special meaning.
This was not just another flight for her, but a return to herself and all that she’d worked hard for — her very first long-haul flight in more than ten years.
Her movements were fluid and effortless as she tried to stop her mind from wandering elsewhere, to the family and the delicate balance she strived to maintain between her work and loved ones.
Scanning the cabin with practised eyes, she ensured each passenger was comfortable and at ease.
She was their protector in the clouds, a comforting presence in the vast expanse of blue; she had to keep her mind on the job, for their sakes, and hers.
‘Is there anything I can get for you, sir?’ she asked politely, her voice calm and soothing over the hum of the engines.
‘Everything is perfect, thank you,’ the passenger replied, and she nodded with a gentle smile.
As the plane sped down the runway then ascended into the sky, she caught a glimpse of her reflection in the porthole window.
The constellations above seemed to mirror the patterns of her life — complex, beautiful, and infinitely connected.
With Jay’s resolute support and love, she was doing a pretty good job of navigating this intricate dance of responsibilities and dreams, always aiming for the stars while keeping her feet firmly planted on the ground.
In the past few weeks, she’d wrestled with schedules and school runs in between getting used to her new life.
She often struggled to balance the pull of the clouds with the grounding force of motherhood, her heart torn between two worlds, but she was giving it her best, and that was all she could do.
And to top it all off, her dreams of being up on the mountaintop had started again.
Just last night.
Maybe flying in reality had brought the soaring heights of her otherworldly dreams back to life.
