Chapter Sixteen

Jay stood tall against the weathered wooden fence encircling the showgrounds, his piercing blue eyes lost in the distant horizon where the sun was bidding its farewell for the day.

The fading light of dusk cast a golden glow upon his rugged features, highlighting the slight tilt of his head and his contemplative posture.

As he gazed into the distance, memories flooded his thoughts, ones where he was flying through the clouds with Mark, their laughter mingling with the roar of engines as they carved their destiny into the sky.

But there were also memories of recent darker times, where Mark’s struggles with alcoholism hung heavy.

‘Jay, honey?’ A gentle voice cut through his reverie like a ray of sunlight breaking through a cloudy sky.

He turned to see Zara standing next to him, her curly brown hair framing her face like a halo in the fading light.

Her eyes reflected an inner strength that always moved him as she held out her hand, fingers delicately curled in invitation.

And as he accepted, her touch sent ripples of determination through him, reminding him of his yearning to help Mark find his way back to the man he’d once been.

‘Come on,’ she said, smiling, ‘the girls are waiting.’

Together, they walked towards the heart of the bustling showground, where the annual show was alive with sights and sounds.

Sideshow alley buzzed with excitement and laughter, while carnival music filled the air.

Amy and Lily tugged at their sleeves in excitement, eager to explore all the wonders around them.

‘Dad, look!’ Amy exclaimed, pointing at a carousel adorned with twinkling lights.

‘Wow.’ He breathed as he admired how the painted horses seemed to come to life as they spun to the tune of an old-time melody, beckoning them into a world of whimsy.

‘Can we go on it, please?’ Lily chimed in, her anticipation palpable.

‘Of course, my treasures,’ Jay said, temporarily setting aside his worries about Mark.

They joined the queue, with his gaze lingering on Zara as she shared excited whispers with their daughters.

Their turn came soon enough, and they boarded the ride.

Jay helped both the girls onto the vibrantly painted horses before finding a chariot for himself and Zara nearby.

With a sudden lurch and the sound of mechanical gears engaging, the carousel began its slow and steady rotation.

‘It’s beautiful, isn’t it?’ Zara breathed with delight, her voice barely audible above the music yet resonating deeply within him.

‘Nothing compares to your beauty and that of our girls,’ he replied sincerely.

‘Aww, you always know what to say, Jay Maverick.’ She swooned, glowing from the inside out.

And he did, but only because she made him feel so much, so deeply.

As they turned in slow circles, with their horse bobbing up and down beneath them, the warm, buttery aroma of freshly popped popcorn and spun fairy floss filled the air, mingling with the salty tang of the ocean breeze that wafted in from the nearby coastline.

It was a sensory paradise, an invitation to leave worries behind and bask in the simple joys of life.

Disembarking from the carousel, the girls eagerly rushed ahead to claim their coveted show bags.

The overpriced goodies were like treasure chests, bursting with cheap trinkets and sweet treats that glittered under the vibrant lights.

Jay and Zara followed, their fingers and hearts entwined.

‘Let’s try everything!’ Lily exclaimed, and her contagious enthusiasm was met with cheers from Amy.

‘Everything it is,’ Jay agreed, a smile playing at his lips.

‘My gosh, we’re all going to be on sugar highs,’ Zara said with a giggle. ‘And we know what happens over the other side of that.’

Chuckling, Jay motioned a steep dive with his hand.

‘Uh-huh,’ Zara agreed spiritedly.

Amid the laughter and exhilaration of the rides, Jay fully embraced the present moment.

He cherished the bubble of love that surrounded him, and he wanted to be all in for this family day out.

It was a few wonderful hours later, with the joyful sound of laughter and rides still lingering in his ears, when the ring of his phone jolted him out of his contentment.

Pulling it from his pocket, he saw Suzanne’s number on the screen and immediately felt a knot of worry tighten his stomach.

Lately, her calls to him, instead of Zara now that he knew the full magnitude of Mark’s downward spiral, were always urgent and never without reason.

Zara’s gaze shifted from the glowing phone to him, her eyes narrowing with concern as she instinctively tightened her grip on their daughters’ hands.

‘Hi, Suz,’ Jay answered cautiously, trying to keep his voice steady despite the sudden surge of unease.

‘Jay, it’s Mark.’ Suzanne’s voice trembled with urgency. ‘There’s been an accident. It’s really bad.’

Suzanne’s words hit him like a physical blow, and he had to fight from collapsing to his knees. ‘Is he …?’

‘Yes, he’s alive.’ She heaved an almighty sigh of relief. ‘And as for me, miraculously, I’ve only got a few cuts and bruises.’

‘Oh, thank god for that.’ He felt time grind to a halt as the bustling scene of the show faded into a blur. ‘Is he conscious?’ The sounds of merriment, the vibrant energy of life around him, sounds he was relishing just moments ago — it all seemed insignificant now.

‘No, Jay, not yet.’ Suzanne’s voice broke and sobs echoed. ‘They’ve given him a decent dose of morphine.’

‘Where are you now?’ he managed to ask, already feeling the pull towards action, as his heart became a steadfast compass pointing to his friends in need.

‘Royal Brisbane Hospital.’ Her voice quivered. ‘I’m going to be fine, but Jay, Mark needs you.’

‘Okay. We’re coming, Suzanne. We’re coming right now. You just hang in there, okay, Zara will be right beside you really soon.’ He ended the call, his fingers trembling slightly as he slipped the phone back into his pocket.

Turning back to Zara, he searched for words that wouldn’t come, but one look at her face told him she already understood the gravity of the situation.

His heart clenched as he quickly explained the situation to her and his daughters.

And as the news sunk in, the girls’ faces transformed from showground excitement to confusion and fear, mirroring the emotions that he and Zara were feeling.

And he totally understood their concern.

Mark had always been their chosen uncle. Both girls loved his best mate dearly.

‘Okay, girls, we’ll have to leave now as we have to get there as soon as we can,’ Zara declared with a mixture of determination and compassion, the freckles dusting her cheeks stark against her suddenly pale complexion.

‘Yes, of course,’ Amy said in a voice almost too grown up for a twelve-year-old.

With her bottom lip trembling, all Lily could do was nod in agreement.

Quickly making their way from the showgrounds, they reached their parking spot in record time.

As he climbed behind the wheel of the family sedan, Jay’s thoughts churned like a stormy ocean, dark and relentless.

Memories of Mark’s struggles with alcoholism flooded his mind — the times he’d stood by him, hoping against hope for his recovery, now clashing with the harsh reality at hand.

Poor Suzanne had her hands full, and then some.

The drive into the city was a tense and silent one. In the backseat, the girls huddled close together, each of them clearly sensing the gravity of the situation. Every so often, their small voices broke through the silence with questions that Jay and Zara answered with reassurances.

‘Will Uncle Mark be okay?’ Amy innocently asked.

‘I’m sure the doctors will be doing everything they can to help him,’ Zara replied softly, reaching back to squeeze her daughter’s hand. ‘And your dad and I will make sure he has everything he needs to get better, too.’

‘Could magic fix him?’ Lily’s question hung in the air, a painful reminder of life’s harsh realities. ‘I could try and wave my Harry Potter wand over him.’

‘That’s really sweet of you, Lily, but …’ Zara stopped short as Jay placed a hand on her leg.

‘Sometimes,’ Jay interjected gently, glancing at Zara before focusing on the road ahead, ‘the most powerful magic is having people who love you by your side. And we’re going to give Uncle Mark all the love and support we can.’

‘Okay,’ Lily said ever so seriously. ‘I’ll make sure to hug him very tight when we get there, just like you and Mum do when I’m hurt.’

It was all Jay could do not to burst into sobs as the highway stretched out before them, a ribbon winding through the landscape, leading them closer to Mark and the unknown ahead.

Needing to remain calm, his mind drifted to the vastness of sky that he and his best mate had called their office for many years.

It was a place that he no longer traversed, and one that Mark had been suspended from indefinitely, and like the tides guided by the moon, he felt the unbreakable pull of friendship propelling him forward.

There had to be a way to get Mark back on the straight and narrow.

If not for himself, then for Suzanne. Zara’s best friend deserved the world.

‘Zara,’ Jay murmured softly, his quiet voice heavy with emotion, ‘I’m honestly afraid of what we’ll find when we get there.’

‘No matter what it is, we’ll be there for Suz, and we’ll all face it together,’ Zara replied in a firm but gentle tone. ‘Love is stronger than fear, Jay. Always. Hold onto that, okay.’

‘I’ll try to, my love.’ His grip tightened on the steering wheel as he fought back raw emotion.
