42. Wyn #2

“Hunh. Well, anyway, what I’m saying is, killing Rico won’t make you feel any less validated that you meant something to Fredo.

That has to come from within, Gio. But I’m telling you, as someone who knew Fredo, and has actually talked to him about you guys, you did mean something.

You were loved, and Rico acknowledges you as Mars’s other dad.

He was always going to tell you about him; Auty just beat him to it.

And whether you wanna admit it or not, Fredo would absolutely kill you for trying to kill Rico. ”

I stand, knowing my welcome is souring by the second.

“Get better. Rest up. And when you get out of here, use all this energy into getting to know Mars. He’s a great kid, and he’d probably grow to love you as much as he loves his uncle.

Maybe even more.” I wink at him, then leave the Jackson brothers to stew over their failed missions.

Rico would probably kill me for being around them, but unlike him, I actually understand how it feels to think you don’t matter to the one you love. It could drive you to fuck their homeboy, or in Slime’s case, spend a year trying to kill his brother.

Nothing a little words of affirmation won’t fix. Hopefully.

No, I think I fixed it.

“I’m on a roll,” I whisper to myself as I exit the ICU and meet up with Quarter Pint. Nothing can ruin this day.

My hips move as I twirl all through my living room, blasting Saturday Love.

My album is completely done and ready to be released.

I know I broke through to G and Slime, because I had my favorite from G’s restaurant Guiliano’s hot and ready waiting at my front desk an hour after posting I’d be home all day.

And last but not least, my man who is not my man is spending the night and will be giving me the dick I deserve.

This is the peace that you cannot buy!

I barely notice my personal elevator dinging, until a piercing wail shatters my priceless peace.

“Pause the music!” I bellow, before turning around to see Brina struggling with two toddlers and a Louis Vuitton backpack.

I zero in on Cammy, since Cody doesn’t like anyone but his mean ass daddy, and take her from her mother. She calms down instantly, laying her head on my shoulder.

Brina drops the backpack on the floor as she sets Cody down, and he runs off to the window, continuing his tantrum over there.

“Now what brings Trudy, Bebe, and Cece over?” I coo, bouncing Cammy on my hip.

Brina grabs her backpack and stomps over to the island. She takes out a canned margarita, opens it, and takes a serious gulp. “We got like twenty minutes tops before this nigga storms in here. Maybe less, since I told him I was leaving him.”

“And why would you lie like that?” I cackle, gently taking my necklace out of Cammy’s hand. “Is that why Boosie Bad Azz over there is mad?”

We both glance at Cody, who has found my coffee table book and has calmed down enough to look at the pictures.

“Girl, snatched him right of that nigga’s arms. It’s been a year, Wyn.

A year of him trying to get me on the game with him.

A year of him trying to decipher song lyrics for me.

A year of him sending me videos of things I don’t know about because I’m not from here.

A year of him trying to make me into his girl best friend when that has never been me.

We have our things we do together; reality tv, cooking, working out.

” She counts them out on her fingers before taking another healthy swig.

“I’ll admit, at first, I didn’t get it. You guys’ friendship.

Nigga got all these brothers and shit, why he need a girl friend, one that he had so much history with…

but now, oh now I see, Wyn. I see the charity you’ve done, because what the fuck, that nigga is annoying.

I just wanna listen to my playlist and clean.

I don’t care about what obscure sample from 1978 is on a loop!

I ask him to call Shad, and he says don’t nobody wanna hear all them babies in the background.

Nigga, don’t nobody wanna hear you! Then Mace said I do the same for Shad.

She treated me to lunch and told me to get you guys back good or it’ll just get worse.

Please, Wyn. Especially because, somehow, I know his obsession with music is because of you, anyway. Save my marriage!”

Her ice cold hands clamp around my arm, just as my elevator dings again.

“That reminds me,” I say, handing her Cammy. “How does this nigga know my elevator code?”

She takes her baby with one hand and her drink in another. I know she’s serious, because it’s not even five in the afternoon yet. “It’s Casey, Wyn. He prolly stole it from me while I pretended my phone was broken so I didn’t have to look at any more stupid local videos!”

My doors open, and Set stomps through, glaring at both of us. Cody yells for his daddy, and Set rushes over to him, picking him up and hugging him to his chest.

“Gimme one reason why I shouldn’t act a fool on both y’all,” he seethes, hand palming Cody’s little braids.

“You two need to figure this out. It’s been a year, and frankly, I can either be your fine ass trophy wife or the homie, but I cannot do both anymore.

Me and Cammy will be in the beauty room!

” Brina downs the rest of her can before setting it a little hard on my counter.

Chucking up the deuces, she leaves us in my living room.

“Wynter Snow, back with the orange hair. Guess you over looking like Elsa?”

I roll my eyes and turn toward Set. “It’ll be back for my album release party this weekend. I hear you’re on the verge of losing your wife.”

Set takes a seat on my couch and puts his dirty ass shoes on my coffee table. Cody reaches for the coffee table book, before sliding off his lap and going back to it.

“Clearly you can see wherever B go, I’m not too far behind.”
