Chapter 30

POV: Camille?

The first morning after everything finally imploded, well it felt like walking on a tightrope between exhilaration and uncertainty and instead of feeling like I was close to falling, I felt as if I had…balance.

Michael was still sleeping when I woke up.

I pressed my cheek to his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. It served as a constant reminder that some things—some people were worth the risk.

Michael stirred finally and lifted his arm and opened his eyes. He smiled, that quiet, intimate smile he usually did.

“Morning,” he murmured.

“Morning,” I whispered back, I could tell that my tone was unsteady from the emotions I hadn’t fully processed yet.

He shifted so we were facing each other. “Did I scare you last night?”

I chuckled. “Scare me? No but overwhelm me? Absolutely.”

He laughed. “Good, that means I’m human and not a robot.”

“You are human and terrifying and irresistible.”

I felt that familiar ache of longing in my chest.

Yet, this time, there was something different—there was a sense of safety beneath the danger.

The vulnerability we’d shared, the honesty in our eyes, had shifted the rules. We weren’t playing games anymore.

We ate breakfast then showered then talked then went over work. But beneath the mundane logistics, there was an unspoken agreement that we were entering this new chapter together, as a team, in both business and life.

“I think it’s time we told them,” Michael said suddenly, breaking the comfortable silence between the two of us finally. “About us.”

I didn’t expect this. At all.

“Are you sure? After everything? Some people might judge. There are politics, appearances, office gossip and who knows what else.”

He turned to me, his gaze boring a hole through me. “Camille, we’ve faced crises, betrayals, manipulations, all of it—together. If we can survive that then we can survive telling them and I want you by my side, fully visible, and without secrets. I’m serious.”

My chest tightened and I swallowed hard.

He was right.

I had spent years guarding my heart. But the thought of hiding who we were, after everything we’d fought through felt dishonest. I wanted to move forward with him.

“We do it together,” I said finally, voice firm.

He smiled and in that smile I saw everything I wanted. “Together.”

By mid-morning, we were walking through Vanderbilt Enterprises.

I could feel the scrutiny, but Michael’s hand resting lightly on the small of my back anchored me and gave me a newfound strength.

We arrived at the conference room, where senior executives were gathered for the morning briefing and Michael and I took a seat next to each other.

Then he leaned slightly in and whispered, “Ready?”

I nodded. “Ready.”

The meeting began as usual with the typical reports, numbers, and projections but Michael’s attention was half on the papers before him and half on me.

“Before we begin the next agenda item there’s something I need to share. Camille and I…”

His gaze found mine. “Are in a relationship. We’ve made this decision carefully, and we’re committed to maintaining professionalism and integrity in all aspects of our work. We expect nothing less of ourselves, and we appreciate your respect and understanding.”

A hush fell over the room then eyes widened then murmurs rippled.

I braced for judgment, but instead, something surprising happened.

One by one, some nodded. Some looked skeptical, some looked indifferent but it wasn’t a roar of disagreement or outrage that I had once expected.

I exhaled, relief flooding over me like a tidal wave.

“We did it,” I whispered to Michael.

“Yes,” he replied. “Together.”

And the next day brought another big decision.

A recruiter from another firm reached out and offered an opportunity for a senior position I had long dreamed of…I told Michael of the decision and it felt like hours as we sat in silence, thinking of it.

“You deserve this,” he said finally after a long while. “Whatever you choose, I support you and our relationship doesn’t change that.”

I looked at him, feeling the depth of his respect and trust.

Choosing this job would mean preserving the integrity of our relationship as well as keeping love and ambition from clashing. And yet, it was terrifying to step into the unknown.

“I have to take it, for us and for myself. I need to maintain who I am, even as we merge our lives,” I said finally, releasing a pent up breath.

Michael smiled. “Then take it. I’ll be here, cheering you on and we’ll face the future together.”

A week passed, and our lives began to find a steady, comfortable rhythm.

And on a sunny Saturday morning, we found ourselves in a small city park, hand in hand, walking slowly—together.

We stopped at a bench overlooking a small pond and sat together. I rested my head against his shoulder, feeling the familiar warmth and reassurance.

“Do you ever think about how far we’ve come?” I asked, looking out at the pond.

“All the time,” he admitted, wrapping his arm around my shoulder. “It wasn’t easy but we chose each other, again and again and that’s what matters.”

I smiled, truly smiled. “A future together doesn’t feel impossible anymore.”

“No,” he said, turning to face me and drown me in his dark, serious gaze but it looked lighter now. “It feels real and I’m ready for it…all of it with you.”

I smiled.

“Ready to take the leap?” he asked softly.

I met his gaze and didn’t look away. “Yes. Together.”

He smiled, pressing his forehead to mine. “Then let’s do it.”

And as we walked through the park, hands intertwined, I knew we were ready.

Ready for the challenges, the uncertainties, and the triumphs that awaited us.

A future together wasn’t just a possibility—it was ours to build…together, without contracts and without guidelines.

And for the first time in a long time, I felt completely, irrevocably free.
