The Agent #2

I flicked off the safety as I held it up in front of me. I stared at the doorway from which I’d come, listening for even the smallest movement. My heartbeat thudded in my ears, rapping to a mix of adrenaline and fear. “Mateo,” I sang. “Come on! I’m ready to play now!”

His chuckle echoed through the room, making me do a double take of every single inch. “Are you sure? You remember what I said about gun play, didn’t you?”

“Of course. It’s your favorite.”

“Sure. But do you know why?”

I shook my head. “You didn’t say.”

“Because I don’t miss.” Silent bullets followed his voice, the sound of gunshots replaced by cracking glass and collapsing wood as they sailed through the furniture.

“Fuck!” I swore as I ducked for cover behind the couch. I lay low on the floor, avoiding any strays that made it through the fabric. Bullets ripped through the cushions, sending snowflakes of white feathers flying everywhere.

I listened for each thud, trying to time the end of his trigger spree.

After a moment of no sounds, I peeked around the couch and saw him crouching near the doorway. His eyes were bouncing between the snowstorm of fluffs, searching for any indication I was still alive.

I pulled my gun and shot at his ass, giving him plenty.

He immediately pulled back, disappearing behind the doorway.

I ceased my fire. I was not about to ruin the walls. The living room furniture has endured more than enough damage.

“Hey, new rule,” I shouted. “We don’t fuck up my house!”

Only silence responded.

Brows pinched, I peeked around the couch again. I didn’t see any movement near the doorway. Not even a shadow near where he once hid.

Rising from my cover, I pointed my gun out in front of me. Its aim followed my eyes as I stepped out from the couch, scouring every inch of the perimeter around me. “You still alive, baby?” I asked.

“Very much so,” he replied, his voice inches behind me.

I spun around, ready to pull the trigger.

He grabbed my arms as I did so, and pointed them up towards the sky. The bullet sailed straight into the ceiling.

Keeping a grip on my arm, he shoved me backwards. The gun was knocked out of my hands as I collided with the wall.

Before he could try to pin me between the wall and his body, I kneed him in the abdomen.

He coughed from the strike, doubling over the slightest bit.

The tiny opening was all I needed to drive my head straight against his.

“Ah!” He grunted as my forehead clocked him right in the mouth.

I ignored the sting in the aftermath and wiggled my arms free. I shoved him with all my might, sending him straight onto the floor.

My eyes darted to the floor, searching for my fallen gun. I spotted it a few feet away on the floor.

He grabbed my ankle as I lunged for it. The sudden loss of balance made me tumble to the ground.

Annoyed, I looked back and tried to kick him in the face.

Dodging my flailing foot, he pushed himself up onto his knees and started pulling me back.

I clawed at the carpet, trying to fight the power of his tugs. My acrylic nails only slid against the fabric.

When I was close enough, he flipped me onto my back and wrapped his fingers around my neck again.

I clawed and pushed at his arm as he squeezed, nearly cutting off my windpipe, but his grip was too strong to move. I’d have to figure out another way to get him off of me.

Raising my legs, I threw one leg over his shoulder, and wrapped it around the back of his neck. I used my other leg to hook my calf around my ankle, locking the hold. I squeezed my legs, choking him between my thighs and his own arm.

The rumble of his throat vibrated against my thighs. He released my neck, but I gripped his wrist before he could move it. His free hand pushed at my thighs, trying to break my hold.

I only added more pressure, silently refusing to release him.

Another sound in his throat hummed against my legs as his fingers gripped my thighs. Holding on tight, he turned his head and sank his teeth into my inner thigh.

“Ow,” I hissed, releasing my hold to escape the sharp pain. I pressed the sole of my foot into his shoulder and shoved him backwards. “Asshole,” I grumbled, turning my attention back to the gun - now more than a few feet away.

Pushing myself up, I crawled towards it, flexing my fingers as far as they could go.

Cool metal kissed my skin as my fingers wrapped around the handle. Grasping it, I rose to my feet and pointed the gun at Mateo’s head.

A chuckle rumbled through his chest, but his lips remained in a line. “Congratulations, Agent,” he said, rising from the floor. “You’ve caught me.”

I stood still as he stalked towards me, holding his steady gaze. “Stay back.”

“Or what?” He challenged, continuing to move closer. “You gonna shoot me?” His chest met the mouth of the gun, directly over his heart. “Do it.”

My finger curled around the trigger. Shooting him now, while he stood unarmed and surrendered, would make me no better than the criminals I condemned.

But, the words for arrest I’d thrown so casually at him before were stuck in my throat.

I’d seen him in cuffs already tonight, and I hadn’t liked it.

“This is what you wanted, right?” he continued. He held out hands, wrists facing up. “Either kill me or put those shiny little bracelets on. Your choice.”

My eyes bounced between his hands and his eyes. This wasn’t how I expected this to go. He wasn’t supposed to surrender. And I wasn’t supposed to feel this ache in my chest at the thought of finally ending this chase.

A crease formed between his brows as he noticed my hesitation. His gaze searched mine, reading the dilemma unfolding inside my head. His head bobbed in a slow nod. “Alright,” he murmured, his eyes lowering to my lips, lingering there for a moment. “Fuck it, then.”

It was my turn to raise a brow, confused by what he meant.

His hands finally moved. One knocked the gun out of my hand while the other grasped the back of my neck, pulling me towards him. He met me halfway, our lips crashing in a lethal collision.
