CHAPTER NINETEEN #3

"I've never had this," Cassia admitted, her voice fragile, trembling with a heartbreaking honesty.

"No one has ever done anything like this for me, Dante.

I... I genuinely do not know how to feel about it.

I don't have the language for it. I don't have the experience to process being cared for this way. "

Dante’s heart ached at the confession. He brought a hand up, his thumb gently wiping away a stray tear that lingered on her cheekbone.

"You don't have to feel anything specific, Cassia," Dante told her softly, his pale green eyes holding hers with an unshakable devotion.

"You don't need to find the language. You just need to know that you are the center of my world now.

And keeping you safe, making your life easier...

to me, it is the simplest and most natural thing in the world.

There is nothing complicated about it at all. "

Cassia looked at the man holding her. She saw the lethal Don, the ruthless king of the underworld, brought to his knees by his love for her.

She let out a soft, shuddering breath, and she leaned in.

When their lips met, the emotional weight of the evening, of the past six months of tension, banter, and slow-building trust, finally gave way to something infinitely deeper.

It wasn't a hurried, frantic kiss. It was slow, reverent, and with unspoken promises. Dante’s hand slipped to the nape of her neck, his fingers tangling in her auburn hair, tilting her head to deepen the angle.

Cassia’s hands slid up his chest, her fingers curling into his shoulders, anchoring herself to him as the kiss turned desperate, hungry, and consuming.

The transition from the window seat to the bedroom was a blur of tangled limbs, breathless murmurs, and shedding clothes.

When Dante finally laid her back against the cool cotton sheets of her bed, the ambient light from the streetlamps outside cast a faint, silvery glow over her skin.

He hovered over her, supporting his weight on his forearms, looking down at her as if she were the most precious, magnificent thing the earth had ever produced.

Cassia looked up at him, her chest heaving, her pale eyes dark with desire and complete trust. For a woman who had never yielded control to anyone, surrendering to him in the darkness of her room was the ultimate act of faith.

Dante touched her with a reverence that bordered on worship.

His hands, calloused from a life of violence, mapped the curves of her body with agonizing slowness.

He traced the line of her collarbone, the dip of her waist, the curve of her hip, learning the geography of her skin as if committing it to permanent memory.

Everywhere his fingers trailed, a trail of fire ignited in her veins.

Cassia gasped softly, her back arching off the mattress as his mouth followed the path of his hands, pressing hot, open-mouthed kisses down her jaw, her neck, the sensitive pulse point at her throat.

She tangled her fingers in his dark hair, pulling him closer, her breath hitching as the friction of his skin against hers sent blinding waves of heat through her core.

When they finally came together, it was with a slow, deliberate intimacy that felt transformative. Dante held her gaze, his pale green eyes locked onto hers as he moved, making sure she felt the unwavering depth of his devotion with every slide of their bodies.

Cassia’s breath fractured into breathless sighs, her nails digging half-moons into the muscles of his back.

The physical connection was a mirror of their emotional one—intense, unyielding, and grounding.

For Dante, who had lived in the cold dark for eight years, she was a blinding, consuming light.

For Cassia, who had fought the world alone, he was a solid, unbreakable shield.

They moved together in the darkness, the rhythm building, the heat rising, until the overwhelming sensory overload shattered them both.

Cassia cried out his name, burying her face in the crook of his neck, her body trembling violently as the wave crashed over her.

A second later, Dante followed, a low, guttural groan tearing from his throat as he held her tight against his chest, burying his face in her auburn hair.

As the adrenaline slowly faded, leaving them tangled in the sheets, slick with sweat and breathing heavily, Dante pulled the duvet up over them. He pulled Cassia flush against his side, resting his chin on the top of her head, his hand resting securely on her waist.

Cassia didn't pull away. She didn't throw up a wall of sarcasm. She rested her hand flat against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat beneath her palm.

It was a moment that had been six months in the making.

Two people who had never expected to find each other, who had fought against the current of their own survival instincts, had finally fully chosen one another.

And as the city of Rome slept quietly outside her window, Cassia closed her eyes, finally understanding what it felt like to be chosen.
