CHAPTER TWELVE #2

They were still struggling to process the sheer magnitude of exactly who had just moved into their house.

For months, they had treated Zina Emir as a beautiful but ultimately irrelevant peasant—a civilian barista with no pedigree who had stumbled into the Don’s orbit by sheer luck.

To suddenly discover that she was Sherezine Kazan, and that the surviving ghosts of the legendary Kazan dynasty were now residing in the east wing, was absolutely astonishing.

In the ruthless, stratified world of the global syndicate, the Kazans were the equivalent of European royalty. They were myths whispered about in the dark.

Lucia Moretti, who had previously weaponized her rapid Italian to lock Zina out of dinner conversations, was especially stunned.

She sat in the grand lounge, staring blankly into the roaring fireplace, realizing that the young woman she had dismissed and insulted actually carried one of the most intimidating and blood-soaked pedigrees imaginable.

It was not as though the Moretti family suddenly threw their arms wide open to welcome Zina with warm, apologetic embraces.

The aristocratic pride of Milan was too stubborn for that.

However, their attitude toward her had shifted on a fundamental axis.

The condescension was gone. If anything, most of them were now slightly terrified of her.

The image of Zina dropping out of the darkness in her bare feet to snap a mercenary's neck was burned permanently into their minds.

When Zina walked down the halls, the Moretti guards actually bowed their heads in deep, deferential respect.

However, twelve-year-old Reza had a different, incredibly disarming effect on the estate.

Reza was sweet, bright-eyed, and inherently adorable, walking through the grand, intimidating halls of the Palazzo with a quiet, resilient curiosity that melted the icy exterior of the Italian syndicate.

The Moretti family, who lived in a constant state of rigid tension and calculation, took to the boy almost immediately.

The most astonishing transformation occurred within Sandro’s father, Vittorio.

Vittorio, a formidable elder of the family whose failing health had confined him primarily to the private residential suites, happened to be sitting in the sunroom when Reza wandered in carrying his mathematics notebook.

Vittorio took one look at the dark-haired, serious boy, struck up a conversation about the mechanics of chess, and essentially decided on the spot that he finally possessed a grandson.

Zina stood in the arched doorway of the sunroom later that afternoon, watching the scene unfold with uncomprehending disbelief.

"You control the center of the board, Reza," Vittorio instructed warmly, pointing a weathered finger at the ornate marble chessboard resting between them. "Do not rush your knights to the edge. The edges are for cowards. You conquer the middle, and you dictate the war. Do you see?"

"Like this, Signore Vittorio?" Reza asked, carefully moving his knight into a dominant position with a bright, genuine smile.

"Exactly like that, my boy! And call me Nonno. None of this Signore nonsense, you hear me?"

Zina stared, her mouth parting slightly. She looked over her shoulder at Sandro, who was leaning casually against the marble doorframe behind her, his hands resting in the pockets of his tailored trousers.

"What exactly is happening?" Zina whispered, utterly bewildered. "How has my little brother been completely adopted into the Moretti family within what feels like twenty minutes?"

Sandro chuckled, a rich, deep sound of amusement vibrating in his chest. He found her complete bewilderment enormously entertaining.

He stood there, perfectly happy watching his ruthless, retired father fuss over the boy, while the assassin who had dismantled a coup stood paralyzed by the sheer domestic absurdity of it all.

"My father has been demanding a grandson for a decade," Sandro murmured, his green-grey eyes dancing with affection as he looked down at her. "Reza simply walked into the crossfire. There is absolutely nothing you can do about it now. He belongs to Vittorio."

"This is incredibly strange," Zina muttered, shaking her head as she watched Vittorio offer Reza a piece of shortbread.

"It is beautiful," Sandro corrected gently. He reached out, his warm, calloused hand wrapping securely around her waist, pulling her back against his solid chest. "Come with me. Let them play."

Sandro pulled her away from the sunroom, leading her down the echoing, sunlit corridors of the estate. He guided her into the sanctuary of his private office, kicking the doors shut behind them and throwing the deadbolt with a resounding, metallic click.

The moment the lock engaged, the lighthearted amusement in Sandro’s eyes evaporated, replaced instantly by the dark, consuming heat that had been building inside him since she had agreed to move into his home.

He didn't give her a chance to speak. Sandro backed her firmly against the solid wood of the door, his large hands diving into the dark, chaotic waves of her hair.

He crashed his mouth against hers, kissing her with a desperate, crushing intensity that stole the oxygen straight from her lungs.

Zina let out a soft, breathless gasp, melting into his solid frame as her arms flew up to wrap tightly around his neck.

The quiet privacy of the office wrapped around them, insulating them from the strange, unexpected arrangements of their colliding families. For the first time in months, Zina did not feel the oppressive, suffocating weight of looking over her shoulder. She was safe. She was his.

"I have wanted to do this all day," Sandro growled against her lips, his voice a rough, vibrating rasp. His hands mapped the curve of her spine, pulling her hips flush against the hard, undeniable evidence of his arousal.

"You are too demanding, Don Moretti," Zina breathed, though her hands were already frantically pulling his tailored jacket off his broad shoulders, letting it drop carelessly to the Persian rug.

Sandro kissed the side of her neck, his teeth grazing her collarbone, drawing a long, shuddering moan from her throat.

"I have you living in my house," he whispered fiercely against her skin, his breath hot and ragged.

"I can walk across the hall and pull you into my bed.

I am going to be unreasonable about how much time I spend touching you. "

He swept her up into his arms effortlessly, carrying her across the office to the leather sofa near the roaring fireplace. He laid her down against the deep cushions, following her down, his powerful body blanketing hers, pinning her gently to the leather.

Their lovemaking was a frantic, deeply emotional collision of two people who had spent months navigating the razor's edge of survival and deception. Now, stripped of the lies, the secrets, and the civilian disguises, the intimacy between them was raw and blindingly intense.

Sandro’s hands were rough but incredibly reverent as he stripped the silk blouse from her shoulders, his eyes burning with a dark, possessive fire as he took in the pale, flawless expanse of her skin.

He kissed every inch of her, his mouth trailing down her sternum, over the soft swell of her breasts, his tongue teasing and worshipping her until Zina was arching off the leather cushions, her fingers digging desperately into the hard musculature of his back.

"Sandro, please," she begged, her voice fracturing into a breathless sob, her dark eyes shining with overwhelming desire.

"I love you," Sandro murmured, his gaze locking with hers as he positioned himself between her thighs, his eyes stripped of his formidable armor. "I love you, Sherezine."

He entered her with a slow, agonizing slide that drew a beautiful, choked cry from her lips.

The physical connection was staggering, anchoring them both to the present moment, burning away the ghosts of the Kazans and the looming threats of the Italian syndicates.

Zina wrapped her long legs tightly around his waist, pulling him deeper, matching the powerful, relentless rhythm of his thrusts.

The air in the office grew thick with the scent of cedar, leather, and the slick heat of their skin.

Sandro’s control shattered completely under the desperate, answering heat of her body.

He drove into her with a fierce, possessive urgency, his breath hot against her neck as he murmured dark, breathless praises in rapid Italian, consumed by the woman beneath him.

Zina felt the intense, agonizing build of pleasure tightening her muscles, a blinding light expanding behind her closed eyelids.

She held onto his broad shoulders like a lifeline, her nails biting into his skin as the climax broke over her in a violent, shuddering wave, her soft cries muffled against his chest. A second later, Sandro groaned, a deep, guttural sound of pure surrender, pouring himself into her as he shuddered and collapsed against her.

They lay tangled on the leather sofa for a long time, the crackle of the fireplace the only sound breaking the silence of the office. Zina rested her head against his bare chest, listening to the rapid, steady thud of his heart, feeling an unfamiliar sense of safety.

While their families settled into the strange, unexpected reality of their newly merged worlds outside those doors, inside the office, Zina finally allowed herself to believe that they might actually survive this.

She belonged to him, and he belonged to her.

And whoever was coming for them would have to burn the entire world to ash to tear them apart.
