CHAPTER TWENTY #2

"They took the loss because they knew the alternative was total annihilation," Bernardo added.

"The message has been received globally, Sandro.

The Kazan empire and the Moretti syndicate are no longer separate entities.

They are merged. And the world knows what happens to anyone who tests that union. "

Sandro looked down at the gold signet ring on his finger.

The message was indeed clear. Sherezine Kazan was now Sherezine Kazan-Moretti.

She was a dangerous, and breathtakingly beautiful queen, and the entire criminal underworld now operated under one universal, terrifying law: if a single hair on her head was harmed, the Don of Milan would burn the continent to ash.

Over the next few months, Sherezine Kazan-Moretti thrived beautifully.

With the combined assets of the East and the vast European logistics of the Morettis, the syndicate grew to unprecedented heights.

Zina was not a silent wife sitting in the shadows; she was a queen in her own right, her tactical brilliance matching Sandro’s ruthless ambition.

She commanded the terrified respect of the enforcers, and the fierce, protective devotion of her husband.

Sandro was openly, unapologetically possessive, his hand always resting at the small of her back, a silent warning to the world that she belonged to him.

But as the winter thawed into a warm, blooming Italian spring, a bittersweet transition approached the Palazzo.

The sunroom was bathed in golden light, the glass doors thrown open to let the scent of blooming jasmine drift inside. Zina sat on the velvet sofa, a cup of tea cooling in her hands, looking across the low glass table at her mother and grandmother.

Roxana Kazan looked peaceful. The deep lines of grief that had carved her face a year ago had softened.

She was dressed in an elegant linen suit, holding a small leather folio.

Beside her, Meryam was happily watching Reza run across the manicured lawns outside, kicking a football with Ricardo and Nico.

"The reconstruction of the eastern estate is nearly complete," Roxana said quietly, breaking the comfortable silence. "Bogdan’s old lieutenants have been purged, and the loyalists have secured the borders. The territory is stable."

Zina’s hands tightened around her teacup. She knew what this conversation was. "It is time," she whispered, a sudden ache settling in her chest.

Roxana nodded slowly, reaching across the table to cover Zina’s hand. "It is time for us to go home, Sherezine. The East needs its matriarch. Maman wishes to see the gardens of her youth again, and Reza... Reza needs to understand the empire he will one day inherit. We must return to Persia."

Zina looked down at the table, her heart fracturing at the thought of the physical distance.

For over a year, her mother, her grandmother, and her brother had been the only tangible pieces of her old life.

They had survived the fire together. The thought of letting them walk out from behind the impenetrable walls of the Palazzo filled her with a sudden, suffocating anxiety.

"I don't want you to go," Zina admitted, her voice cracking slightly. "What if the loyalists aren't as secure as they claim? What if someone else makes a play for the territory?"

"Then they will meet the combined wrath of the Kazan-Moretti alliance," a deep voice rumbled from the doorway.

Sandro stepped into the sunroom, having just returned from a logistical briefing. He walked up behind the sofa, resting his large hands reassuringly on Zina’s shoulders, pressing a kiss to the crown of her head.

He looked at Roxana, his expression filled with immense respect. "The security protocols in the East have been personally vetted by Matteo and Nico. Your home is a fortress once again, Signora Kazan. But Sherezine’s concerns are valid."

Sandro shifted his gaze down to his wife, his thumbs stroking the tension from her shoulders.

"You will not be separated from them, amore.

Not truly. The private jet is stationed at the airstrip, fully fueled, and crewed around the clock.

It is at your disposal. If you wish to have breakfast in Milan and dinner in Persia, you only have to say the word.

Whenever you need them, or whenever they need you, the distance is nothing. "

Zina leaned her head back against his chest, drawing strength from his unwavering support. She looked at her mother, seeing the peace radiating from Roxana’s dark eyes.

Roxana smiled, a slow, beautiful expression of approval. She looked past Zina, meeting the eyes of the Don of Milan.

"When we arrived in this country, we were broken ghosts running from the slaughter," Roxana said, her voice rich with emotion. "I prayed for a miracle to keep my children safe. I did not expect that miracle to arrive in a bespoke suit with an army at his back."

Roxana stood up, walking around the table to place a hand on Sandro’s arm.

"You have kept your word, Alessandro. You avenged my husband.

You protected my son. And you have given my daughter a life filled with joy.

Seeing the devotion you have for her... I am at peace.

I can return home knowing she is guarded by a man who loves her more than the world. "

Sandro inclined his head, deeply humbled by the matriarch's blessing. "She is my family. Always."

As Zina stood up to embrace her mother, the golden sunlight warming the room, she looked out the window at her brother laughing in the grass, and felt the strong, steady hand of her husband resting on her waist. The scars of the past would always remain, but the future was finally theirs to command.
