Chapter Seventeen #2
It did not arrive with the suffocating, agonizing claws of grief that used to tear his chest apart.
It did not carry the crushing weight of a life-ending failure.
It was simply a quiet, fading echo of a past regret—a brief acknowledgment of a tragic mistake he sincerely wished he had never made.
But the thought vanished almost as quickly as it had materialized, holding no power, leaving no lingering chill.
The ghost of his past was permanently, irrevocably laid to rest. He knew she was safe, happy, and thriving in an empire of her own across the ocean. The closure was complete.
Dario turned away from the darkness of the horizon, his gaze drawn to the warm, amber light spilling from the windows of the master suite.
His heart beat with a steady, grounding rhythm. Life had offered him a blessing beyond his wildest expectations. He did not dwell on the past because his present was too magnificent, too profoundly consuming to ignore.
He walked back into the manor, climbing the grand staircase with purposeful strides. When he opened the door to the master suite, he stopped in the threshold.
Sheher was sitting on the edge of the large mattress, illuminated by the soft glow of the bedside lamp. She was wearing a simple silk robe, her dark hair falling loose over her shoulders. But it was the expression on her face that arrested his momentum.
She possessed a soft, ethereal, luminescent look—a quiet, radiant awe that made the breath catch sharply in Dario’s throat.
"Sheher?" Dario asked softly, closing the door behind him. He crossed the room, stepping into the warm circle of light. "Is everything alright? Are the boys asleep?"
"They are fast asleep," Sheher murmured, her amber eyes lifting to meet his. Her lips curved into a beautiful, trembling smile. She held her hand out; her palm closed over something small.
Dario knelt in front of her, his brow furrowing in mild confusion. He reached out, gently wrapping his large hands around hers. "What is it, amore?"
Sheher slowly opened her fingers.
Resting in the center of her palm were three separate, narrow white plastic sticks. In the small digital windows of each test, the results were unmistakable, bold, and definitive.
Positive. Positive. Positive.
Dario stopped breathing. The ambient sounds of the estate faded away. He stared at the three tests, his brilliant, analytical mind stalling out as the reality of what he was looking at crashed over him.
He looked up at his wife, his dark eyes wide, shining with a sudden, overwhelming rush of unshed tears.
"I am pregnant, Dario," Sheher whispered, a happy, breathless tear slipping down her own cheek. "We are having another baby."
Dario did not speak. He could not. The sheer magnitude of his fortune brought him quite literally to his knees.
He lowered his head, pressing his forehead gently against her knees as a quiet, broken sob of gratitude tore from his chest. He was humbled.
He was leveled by the grace of the universe.
He had spent his youth as an arrogant king, taking everything for granted, destroying the things he should have protected.
To be given this—a second pregnancy, a chance to expand the family that had saved his soul—was a gift he knew he would spend the rest of his life earning.
Sheher ran her fingers through his silver-dusted hair, her heart swelling with an endless, unconditional love for the man weeping at her feet.
Dario turned his face, pressing fervent, desperate kisses to her hands, her wrists, and the soft fabric covering her stomach, murmuring disjointed, passionate prayers of thanks in rapid Italian.
The celebration the following evening was an intimate, joyous explosion of emotion.
Gathered in the private dining room, Salvadore and Gabriella openly wept with joy, immediately launching into rapid-fire debates over nursery colors and new knitting patterns.
Enzo, who had been invited to share the family dinner, raised a glass of vintage wine, offering a rare, genuine smile of congratulation to his Don.
But the highlight of the evening belonged to the four-year-old twins.
Leo and Theo sat at the table, their legs kicking beneath their chairs, looking highly suspicious of the sudden, tearful excitement gripping the adults.
"Why is Mama crying?" Leo demanded, his brow furrowed as he pointed a fork at Sheher, who was wiping away a happy tear.
"Mama is very happy, Leo," Dario explained, leaning over to gently adjust his son’s napkin. His chest felt so full it bordered on pain. "Mama and I have a surprise. You and Theo are going to be big brothers. Mama is going to have a baby."
The twins stopped kicking their legs, processing the information with intense, identical scowls of concentration.
Theo leaned forward, inspecting his mother’s perfectly flat stomach with deep skepticism. "Where is the baby?"
"It is growing inside Mama’s tummy," Sheher smiled softly, resting her hand over her abdomen. "It is very small right now. But in a few months, it will come out, and you will have a new brother or sister to play with."
Leo dropped his fork, his amber eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated horror. He looked at Dario, aghast. "Papa! Did she eat it?"
The entire dining room erupted.
Salvadore threw his head back, letting out a booming, breathless roar of laughter, while Gabriella hid her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking. Enzo choked on his wine, hastily grabbing a napkin to cover his mouth.
Dario bit the inside of his cheek, fighting a losing battle against a grin. He reached out, gently placing a hand on Leo’s shoulder. "No, piccolo. Mama did not eat the baby. It just grows there, where it is warm and safe."
"Can it play football?" Theo asked next, unbothered by the logistics of the baby’s location, deeply focused on the practical applications of a new sibling.
"Not right away," Dario chuckled, the sheer, innocent absurdity of the questions endearing his sons to him even more. "The baby will be very small. You and Leo will have to teach it how to play."
"I will teach it how to roar like a dragon," Leo compromised, seeming to accept the situation now that he knew his mother was not a cannibal.
As the chaotic, beautiful noise of his family washed over the dining room, Dario Vellucci looked at his wife. Sheher met his gaze across the table, her amber eyes shining with a radiant peace. This pregnancy already felt different—lighter, easier, free from the suffocating anxieties of the past.
Dario raised his glass toward her, a silent, deeply reverent toast. The empire outside their walls would always demand his ruthless protection, but sitting in the warm, golden light of his home, surrounded by the laughter of his children and the brilliant smile of his wife, the Don of the European underworld had found his heaven.
