CHAPTER 9 The Woman Beneath the House #3

Her eyes filled.

“You can’t control this.”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“But I can control what I say.”

His voice lowered.

“So I’m not saying goodbye.”

Her throat tightened.

“Fine.”

“Good.”

“Then say something else.”

He stared at her.

The countdown glowed behind him.

**05:53**

Gunfire echoed outside.

Elena shouted, “They breached the first door!”

Dante did not look away from Sofia.

“What do you want me to say?”

She did not know.

Then she did.

“The thing you should have said three years ago.”

His expression changed.

Sofia’s heart pounded.

Dante stepped closer.

“I love you.”

No hesitation.

No almost.

No past tense.

“I loved you before the engagement.”

Her breath caught.

“I loved you while I hated you for running.”

Gunfire cracked outside.

“I loved you before I knew Matteo existed.”

Her eyes filled.

“And I love you now.”

Sofia could barely breathe.

Dante touched her face.

“This time you know.”

A tear slipped free.

“Yes.”

The countdown reached:

**04:31**

Sofia covered his hand with hers.

“I love you too.”

Dante closed his eyes.

Only for a second.

Then he kissed her.

Short.

Hard.

Certain.

When he pulled away, something had settled between them.

Not safety.

Not forgiveness.

Choice.

Real choice.

Elena looked toward the door.

“They’re here.”

The outer lock exploded.

Dante turned.

The Don returned.

Gun raised.

Sofia kept her palm against the scanner.

**03:57**

The vault door shuddered.

Again.

Again.

Then a voice came through the other side.

Mercer.

“Dante.”

Dante smiled coldly.

“There you are.”

Mercer laughed.

“You really think deleting a few files changes anything?”

“No.”

Dante aimed toward the center of the door.

“I think killing you will help.”

“You cannot kill an idea.”

“No.”

His finger settled against the trigger.

“But I can kill you.”

The door began opening.

Elena fired first.

A man fell.

Dante fired next.

Another.

Sofia ducked behind the console.

The countdown continued.

**02:46**

Bullets struck metal.

Glass shattered.

Screams.

Gunfire.

Then Mercer entered.

White shirt.

No lab coat.

Blood on one side of his face.

He looked almost ordinary.

That made him worse.

Dante aimed at him.

Mercer raised both hands.

“You shoot me, you lose the external node.”

Dante stopped.

Barely.

Sofia looked at him.

Mercer smiled.

“There it is.”

Dante’s jaw tightened.

“Information as leverage.”

“Always.”

Mercer looked at Sofia.

“S-17.”

“My name is Sofia.”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“That independent streak was always your strongest trait.”

She hated him instantly.

“Where is the external node?”

Dante asked.

Mercer ignored him.

“You know, your son really is remarkable.”

Dante fired.

The bullet hit the wall beside Mercer’s head.

He froze.

“Mention my son again.”

Dante’s voice was almost calm.

“And the next one goes through your mouth.”

Mercer smiled less.

“Still predictable.”

Sofia looked toward the timer.

**01:38**

Almost.

Mercer noticed.

His face changed.

“You started deletion.”

“Yes.”

Sofia answered.

For the first time, he looked genuinely angry.

“You don’t understand what you’re destroying.”

“Good.”

“You are erasing centuries.”

“Good.”

“Power.”

“Good.”

“Protection.”

Sofia stared at him.

“For whom?”

Mercer said nothing.

She smiled coldly.

“That’s what I thought.”

The timer reached:

**00:52**

Mercer moved.

Dante fired.

Mercer ducked behind a cabinet.

Elena fired toward two men entering behind him.

One fell.

The other returned fire.

Elena cried out.

“Mom!”

Sofia almost removed her hand.

Dante shouted, “Stay!”

Elena hit the floor, clutching her side.

Sofia’s eyes filled.

“Mom!”

“I’m fine!”

Blood said otherwise.

**00:31**

Dante exchanged fire with Mercer.

**00:18**

Mercer shouted, “Stop the deletion and I give you the node!”

Dante looked at Sofia.

Her choice.

Again.

Always.

Sofia stared at the timer.

Matteo.

Her son.

His freedom.

“No.”

Mercer’s face twisted.

“You stupid girl.”

Sofia smiled through tears.

“My mother raised me stubborn.”

Elena laughed weakly from the floor.

**00:07**

Mercer ran toward the console.

Dante intercepted him.

They crashed into the table.

Sofia screamed.

The scanner flashed.

Her hand remained in place.

Dante’s palm slipped from his.

**AUTHORIZATION LOST.**

The timer froze.

**00:03**

“No!”

Sofia shouted.

Dante struggled with Mercer.

Three seconds.

Only three.

Mercer drove a knife toward him.

Dante caught his wrist.

Sofia looked at the scanner.

Then at Dante.

His hand could not reach.

Mercer smiled.

“You lose.”

Then another hand slammed onto Dante’s scanner.

**M-04 LINEAGE AUTHORITY VERIFIED.**

Everyone froze.

The timer resumed.

**00:02**

**00:01**

**DELETION COMPLETE.**

The archive lights turned red.

Mercer stared in horror.

Sofia looked at the hand on the scanner.

Not Dante’s.

Carlo’s.

Her father stood beside her.

Bleeding.

Weak.

But alive.

Dante stared.

“How?”

Carlo looked at the screen.

“Moretti authority can transfer by emergency proxy.”

Dante’s face hardened.

“You had proxy access.”

“Yes.”

“Since when?”

Carlo looked ashamed.

“Three years.”

Sofia felt another betrayal coming.

But before she could speak, every monitor in the vault changed.

Thousands of designation labels vanished.

One after another.

M-04.

S-17.

Hundreds more.

Then Matteo’s file appeared.

**MATTEO MORETTI-BELLINI**

Sofia’s breath caught.

Below it:

**SUCCESSION STATUS: TERMINATED.**

She covered her mouth.

Free.

For the first time since before his birth.

Free.

Dante looked at her.

She looked at him.

Then Mercer screamed.

“No!”

He lunged toward the console.

Dante caught him.

This time, there was nothing restrained in his expression.

Mercer saw it too.

Fear finally entered his face.

“You need me.”

Dante smiled.

“No.”

“The external node.”

“We’ll find it.”

“You can’t.”

Dante looked at Sofia.

Then back at Mercer.

“We’re becoming very good at finding things.”

Mercer tried to pull away.

Dante struck him once.

Hard.

Mercer collapsed.

Alive.

Barely conscious.

Dante stood over him.

Sofia knew what he wanted to do.

She also knew what came next.

“Alive.”

she said.

Dante looked at her.

“He has answers.”

His jaw tightened.

Then he nodded.

“Alive.”

Carlo leaned against the console.

Elena lay bleeding near the wall.

Sofia rushed toward her.

“Mom.”

Elena smiled weakly.

“You did it.”

“We did.”

“No.”

Her mother shook her head.

“You chose it.”

Sofia pressed cloth against her wound.

“Do not make this a goodbye.”

Elena almost laughed.

“You sound like him.”

“That is insulting.”

Dante, across the room, said, “I heard that.”

Despite everything, Elena smiled.

Then the archive speakers activated.

A new automated voice filled the vault.

**SUCCESSION PROGRAM DELETED.**

Pause.

**PRIMARY ARCHIVE CONTROL TRANSFER INITIATED.**

Dante looked up.

“What?”

Elena’s face changed.

“No.”

Sofia froze.

“What?”

The system continued.

**NEW CUSTODIAN REQUIRED.**

Sofia’s blood chilled.

Dante stepped toward the console.

“We deleted succession.”

Elena pushed herself upright.

“This shouldn’t happen.”

“Why is it happening?”

Carlo stared at the screen.

“The Custodian protocol is separate.”

A list appeared.

**ELIGIBLE AUTHORITY DETECTED.**

Then one name.

Sofia stopped breathing.

Not Matteo.

Not Dante.

Her.

**SOFIA BELLINI — S-17**

Silence.

Dante stared at the screen.

Sofia could hear her own heartbeat.

Elena whispered, “Oh God.”

Sofia looked at her.

“What?”

Her mother’s face had gone pale.

“You were never selected only to produce the heir.”

Dante’s eyes narrowed.

“What are you saying?”

Elena looked at her daughter.

“They were evaluating you too.”

“For what?”

Sofia asked.

Elena’s answer came barely above a whisper.

“To become the next Custodian.”

The vault went silent.

For years, Sofia had believed she was the bait.

The bride.

The mother.

The weakness used to control Dante.

But the archive had just revealed something far more dangerous.

The Circle had not merely wanted Sofia to give them Matteo.

They had wanted Sofia herself.

And whether she accepted it or not, every secret the Circle had ever collected was now waiting for her command.
