Chapter eighteen

Love Does Not Prevail

In the weeks following the fall of the Wintgomery house, there has been much speculation of whether the engagement between Miss Wintgomery and Mr. G— was still in effect. This author is never one to publish idle musings, and so I held off from commenting.

However, I now have confirmation of several facts.

Mr. G— clearly considers himself a free man, as he has been seen flirting publicly.

Even more interesting is a private tryst between him and Miss S—.

They have spent time together on at least two nights.

Though they have attempted to disguise their familiarity in public, they were unsuccessful at disguising their movements as they rendezvoused.

It is my pleasure to bring this sordid act to light.

A source inside Wintgomery house — when pressed with these facts — confirmed that the engagement was broken as soon as the dragon died, but no announcement was made out of respect for the Wintgomery family.

Perhaps there was some love in the engagement, to engender that; apparently, not quite enough love to continue with the marriage.

Imagine having so much respect for a fallen house that you don’t immediately distance yourself from them?

It boggles the mind. Mr. G— certainly deserves the public embarrassment of having his deeds revealed after taking the status of a dragon house so lightly.

Without a dragon to help in the fields, the fall harvest is sure to fail at the Wintgomery lands.

No doubt, this will send their meager funds into a spin.

Combined with the high tax they will now have to pay on their lands because they have lost their status, they will soon be selling their estate.

I only hope that it is bought by a dragon family nearby, so the new owners can have a chance of bringing in the considerable harvest with the help of a dragon close to its nest. Interested buyers should begin lining up…
