Chapter 101
Aurora slowly climbed onto one of the supply carts.
The murmuring crowd gradually fell silent.
Hundreds of tired faces turned toward her.
Mothers held sleeping children against their shoulders.
Wives stood with trembling hands clasped tightly together.
Elderly parents leaned on one another for support.
Every pair of eyes carried the same question.
Did my loved one survive?
Aurora looked across the sea of faces.
Her chest tightened.
She knew many of them by name.
She had treated their children.
She had opened schools for them.
She had celebrated harvest festivals with them.
These weren't simply the people of Emberforge.
They were...Her family.
She took a slow, unsteady breath, "My friends..."
Her voice was hoarse from days of shouting orders inside the mine.
"I know you are frightened."
Silence.
"I know every minute feels like an hour...and every hour feels like a lifetime."
Several women lowered their heads, quietly wiping away tears.
Aurora swallowed the lump in her throat.
"I wish..."
She paused, fighting to keep her own voice steady.
"...I wish I could stand here and tell every one of you that your husbands, your sons, your fathers, and your brothers are already on their way home."
A painful silence settled over the crowd.
"But I cannot."
A little boy buried his face against his mother's skirt.
Aurora's eyes stung, "But please...do not lose hope."
She looked toward the distant mountain.
"The rescue has not stopped. It has not slowed. And it will not stop."
Her voice grew firmer, "Our rescuers are still digging. Our soldiers are still fighting. My father..."
Her voice trembled for the first time, "...Duke Owen...is still on that mountain."
She blinked back fresh tears.
"He refused to come home.He looked at me and said..."
A faint, broken smile appeared on her lips.
"'How can I leave when my people are still waiting for me?'"
Several miners' wives covered their mouths as tears escaped.
Aurora continued.
"Captain Turner is still there . So are the royal knights. So are men from every duchy. They are risking their own lives.... .because they refuse to leave anyone behind."
She pressed a trembling hand against her heart.
"And neither will we."
A soft sob echoed through the crowd.
Aurora looked toward the injured miners resting nearby.
"The wounded who returned today will remain under our care. The manor has been opened. The medical center has been prepared. The palace has sent physicians to help us. We will care for every injured miner as though he were our own family."
Her voice softened.
"Thirty men remain too badly injured to travel. We have stabilized them. The moment it is safe....we will bring them home."
She looked over the crowd once more.
"I know many of you are angry. I know many of you are afraid. And I know some of you are wondering whether the people you love will ever walk through those gates again."
Tears slipped down her cheeks.
"I cannot promise miracles. Icannot promise that everyone will return."
Her voice cracked.
"But I can promise you this..."
She placed her hand over her heart.
"No one...will ever be abandoned beneath that mountain."
Not while I still draw breath.
Not while my father still stands.
Not while our soldiers still have strength in their arms.
Not while hope remains.
Her tears fell freely now.
"Because in Emberforge......we are more than a duchy. We are family..... And family..."
She struggled to finish the sentence, "...family never leaves one another behind."
The silence that followed was overwhelming.
Then an elderly woman slowly stepped forward, "My Lady..."
Aurora looked at her.
The woman bowed deeply despite her age.
"Thank you.....for staying with our sons."
Another voice followed.
"Thank you for saving my husband."
Then another.
"And my brother."
"My boy."
"My father."
Soon tears flowed openly throughout the crowd.
Some people embraced one another.
Others simply bowed their heads in silent prayer.
Aurora stepped down from the cart.
Immediately she went back to work.
She personally helped move the injured miners into the temporary tents.
She checked every bandage.
Spoke gently to frightened children.
Held the hands of grieving mothers.
Comforted wives who had no answers.
By the time the last patient had been settled, the moon had risen high into the night sky.
Emily quietly walked beside her.
Neither woman had spoken for several minutes.
Finally Aurora stopped.
"Emily..."
"Yes, My Lady?"
Aurora managed a tired smile.
"Go."
Emily frowned.
"My Lady?"
"Take a bath. Eat. Sleep. You've worked just as hard as I have."
Emily shook her head immediately.
"I'm staying with you."
Aurora gently took both of Emily's hands.
"That wasn't a request."
Emily looked at her for several seconds before her eyes filled with tears.
"...Yes, My Lady."
Anne had already prepared a hot bath.
Philip quietly instructed the kitchen to prepare Aurora's favorite meal, though he suspected she wouldn't eat much.
Queen Amelia gently squeezed Aurora's shoulder before climbing into her carriage.
"I must return to the palace."
She kissed Aurora's forehead.
"I'll send every physician I can spare."
Aurora nodded silently.
"Thank you... Your Majesty."
As the Queen departed, Eleanor remained behind.
She watched quietly as Anne helped Aurora out of her filthy clothes.
Mud.
Dust.
Soot.
Blood.
None of it belonged to Aurora alone.
She had carried the suffering of an entire duchy upon her shoulders.
After her bath, Aurora stepped onto the balcony.
The food Philip had prepared sat untouched.
She forced herself to eat only a few bites before quietly setting the spoon down.
"I can't...", she whispered.
Eleanor said nothing.
She simply walked over and sat beside her daughter.
Aurora stared into the darkness.
"I keep thinking...If I had gone into that mine instead..."
Eleanor immediately took her daughter's hand, "No."
"What if Turner is scared?.. What if Father is exhausted?... What if they're calling for help and no one can reach them?"
Her breathing became uneven, "What if they're still waiting.....and I left them?"
Eleanor gently pulled Aurora into her arms.
The moment Aurora felt her mother's embrace...
The walls she had held together for four endless days finally shattered.
She clung to Eleanor like a frightened child.
"I'm so tired, Mother..."
she sobbed, "So... so tired...Idon't know how to save them anymore."
Eleanor stroked her hair as tears streamed silently down her own face.
"You don't have to carry this alone anymore."
Aurora cried until she could barely breathe.
Until her sobs became hiccups. Until exhaustion claimed what little strength she had left.
Still wrapped safely in her mother's arms...Aurora finally fell asleep.
Eleanor remained there long after, gently brushing the hair from her daughter's face.
For the first time since the mountain collapsed...
It was not the Duchess who cried.
It was simply...
A mother.
