Turner's POV
The passage was barely wide enough for a single man.
Every movement sent loose stones tumbling from the ceiling.
The air was damp and heavy with dust.
Turner leaned against the rough stone wall for a brief moment, forcing himself to steady his breathing.
Every muscle in his body ached.
His shoulder burned where he'd struck the rocks during the fall.
His ribs protested with every breath.
His left leg threatened to give way beneath him.
He ignored all of it.
There were people depending on him.
Turning, he looked at the small group gathered behind him, outside.
The miners looked exhausted.
Filthy.
Hungry.
Terrified.
But...
Alive.
That alone was a miracle.
Everyone believed him.
Even if he wasn't entirely sure he believed them himself.
