Chapter 33 The System Store Is Open
Mike parked his motorcycle. At that moment, Joe and John were being rescued from the top of the van.
Thinking that he was the first to discover the situation, Mike went up and asked with concern, "Are they okay?"
As soon as he spoke, his concerned gaze landed on the two traffickers. Edward, who was talking to Kendall, immediately turned his head and looked at him with a strange expression. "Do you know them?"
"Oh, no, I don't." Mike shook his head honestly. "I just wanted to know what's going on."
Edward's gaze became even stranger. This was a serious human trafficking case.
According to the information Kendall had just provided, the three traffickers had been in this business for at least ten years and had formed a complete and mature industrial chain.
Why was this unrelated bystander getting so involved?
Mike's inexplicable actions seemed suspicious to Edward.
Edward didn't hide his expression. Mike, who had been looking at the two men being rescued by the police, suddenly noticed from the corner of his eye that Edward's expression seemed a little off. Mike immediately shivered and quickly tried to prove his innocence.
"Officer, I have absolutely nothing to do with this.
Please don't misunderstand. I'm just a bystander.
I was about to go up the mountain to pick lychees, and when I was live streaming on the side of the mountain, I found this van with people tied to it.
My assistant was the one who called you to report the crime. "
It would have been better if Mike hadn't explained. The more he talked, the more confused Edward became. "Your assistant... called the police?"
"Yes, yes." Mike nodded with certainty. He was about to say more, but he suddenly noticed that the two men who were rescued from the van not only weren't put in the ambulance, but their wrists were also handcuffed.
Instead, a nurse in white was anxiously carrying two unconscious children from the van to the ambulance.
Mike was stunned. "... What's going on?"
While he was dazed, several police cars appeared at the end of the road and drove toward them. Mike belatedly realized that something was off.
Kendall, who had been standing on the side without saying a word, raised an eyebrow and looked at him. She kindly reminded him, "Those are probably the police who came after your assistant called. The police and ambulance here were called by me."
Mike was speechless and his face turned red. He was so excited that he had forgotten a simple fact, the distance it took for the police to get there from the town. He only chased them from the middle of the mountain. How could the police, who were much farther away, get there faster than him?
Police weren't 5G signals!
The police who came later were not from the same team as Edward. They thought it was just a coincidence that they ran into other officers on their way to a mission, so they honked and planned to keep driving.
Mike, feeling a little guilty, stood in front of the police car and raised his hand to stop them. The police officer in the driver's seat rolled down the window.
At this point, Mike had a feeling that he might have misunderstood something. He went up to them and asked with a straight face, "Excuse me, are you here to stop that small van with two adults tied to it?"
"Yes, we just received a report from the public that a small van had two adults tied to it and was driving dangerously on the road," the police officer replied.
"Do you know where that van is?"
It was just as he thought!
These were the police who came after his assistant called!
To make matters worse, he seemed to have misunderstood something and made a false report!
Mike covered his face in shame. "I know. My assistant was the one who made the report to you. I'm sorry. I might have messed up and wasted your resources..."
Under everyone's confused gaze, Mike took a deep breath and explained the whole situation.
After he finished, Edward finally understood what was going on.
He patted Mike on the shoulder. "You did nothing wrong.
You are a passionate and courageous person.
It's already good enough for most people to just help with a police report, but you risked your own safety and chased after them all by yourself. You're a true man!"
Suddenly being praised, Mike's face turned red, and he felt a little embarrassed. "No, no, I didn't think that much."
Mike's eyes fell on the two men who were handcuffed. He tentatively asked, "So, what exactly is going on? Can I ask? My fans were the ones who noticed it first, and it was because of them that I turned the camera back. I ended the live stream so suddenly. They might still be waiting for an update."
"It's not convenient to tell you for now," Edward shook his head.
Although they had caught Helen, Joe, and John, the three of them had been doing this for so long without being caught, so there were probably other accomplices. Human trafficking was a crime that the country cracked down on and had a 'zero tolerance' policy for.
He knew that after receiving Kendall's report this morning, based on the information she provided, the police not only sent two teams to rescue and arrest the criminals, but other relevant departments were also working overtime to investigate the information of the three people.
"We will release the information after the investigation is complete," Edward said. Mike nodded.
"Captain Edward, the condition of one of the children is not so good. We have to rush back to the hospital immediately," a nurse said, walking over.
Edward's expression became serious. "Okay, let's go."
Everyone quickly got into the cars. Kendall and the other girls were also arranged to sit in a police car. As for the small van, as a piece of evidence, another police officer with a driver's license drove it back to the station.
The clean police car was much more comfortable than the small van, and she didn't have to drive it. After getting in the car, Kendall pulled her hat down over her face and leaned back. On the surface, she was resting her eyes, but she was actually talking to the system in her mind.
"System, since Helen was caught, does that mean I don't get the reward?"
> [... Yes.]
The system hesitantly replied, but it immediately comforted her.
> [But it's okay, Host. Look, even though you missed one mission, you completed two missions!]
The system pulled out a screen that shimmered with golden light in Kendall's mind.
Host: Kendall Lane
Good deeds level: 0 [3/10]
Kendall looked at the number 3 and looked thoughtful.
From the time she was bound to the system until now, she had caught four criminals. But since Joe and John were consecutive missions that were triggered at the same time, the number of missions completed wasn't based on the number of criminals caught, but rather on the number of missions issued?
> [Host, you have one chance to draw a lucky prize. Do you want to use it now?]
"Yes!"
> [Okay.]
As the system spoke, the familiar big spinning wheel appeared in Kendall's mind.
As the saying goes, practice makes perfect.
This was Kendall's third time, and she was already very skilled.
The pointer on the big wheel spun quickly.
Kendall waited quietly until it slowed down and then pointed to one of the sections.
> [Congratulations, Host, you have received +20 karma!]
The system cheered. The two previous times Kendall drew, she got physical items. She loved both the pan and the peace charm.
Kendall had been a little excited, wondering what she would get this time, but it turned out to be karma...
Getting karma felt like getting 'better luck next time' on a scratch-off ticket.
'No, wait. The system had said that karma also had a use!'
> [Host, you have accumulated over 100 karma, so the system store has been already been unlocked in advance. You can see what you like on it.]
The system guided, and it automatically brought up the system store screen. Kendall's heart skipped a beat. She thought she had heard the system say this this morning.
But this morning, Kendall's attention was more on the real world, so she hadn't paid much attention to what the system said. In Kendall's mind, since it was called a store, it should have a wide variety of goods that would make people's eyes light up. But...
"Is that all?" Kendall asked in a questioning tone. The system store in front of her only had three product displays, and it even had 'Today's Flash Sale' written on it. It might as well have said 'poor'!
The system laughed awkwardly.
> [Ahem... Host, this system is not fully developed yet. After future upgrades, there will be more functions and more things in the store.]
Kendall understood. "So you're a new system that just came out."
No wonder it sometimes seemed a little naive. It was a system that hadn't seen the world or experienced the evil in society.
Kendall's attention was on the three items.
Item 1: [Einstein's Wisdom]
Description: With this, you will become as wise as Einstein on planet Earth!
Price: 100,000,000 karma
Item 2: [System Backpack 3]
Description: A backpack that exists in the system space. Each backpack can store one item.
Price: 300 karma
Item 3: [An Eye for an Eye]
Description: The name is 'An Eye for an Eye', but it's actually a fruit full of justice! When used on a person who has done bad things, the consequences of their bad deeds will be reflected back on themselves.
Price: 100 karma
