Chapter Nineteen
Brenton
Brenton knew he was on the world's dumbest dudes list. He needed to tell her, she was going to find out either way, but why did he wait until now? She wanted to kill him. He didn't need to read her mind to figure that out. She literally wanted to rip his head off.
Now, she's resting from the meltdown she just had, something else he caused and all he wanted to do was be close to her. He couldn't leave even though it was probably best that he did. She would go ballistic when she woke up and found him there, but he didn't care. He wanted to make sure she was okay.
He told her the truth, even though it was late; that has to account for something. He never meant to hurt her. He didn't intend on falling in love with her either, but both happened and he needed to figure out how to fix it.
He wanted to explain to her about how lost he was until he found her. Not because he needed the connection, but because he wanted someone to talk to. Another person who knew him inside and out. He wanted what the other angels had with their counterpart.
He wanted to tell her how he fantasized about them being some sort of cheesy superhero team, going around the world fighting crime. They wouldn't wear the corny outfits, but they would do good with the powers they were given.
That was all he could think about at first, but after he met Marie, all those thoughts faded and were replaced by ones of just being with her. Even though he knew it was wrong, she was his world now, apart of him.
He was never leaving her. It didn't matter if she didn't want him around, he wouldn't go. At this point, having a target on his back was the least of his worries. He just wanted Marie to understand how sorry he was and how he would spend the rest of his life making it up to her. Whatever she wanted, he would do.
He knelt next to her bed, willing her to wake up, but all he heard was soft breathing. He caressed her face. His finger trailed from the star birthmark all the way down to her chin. She was so beautiful. His heart ached.
“I can't help it, I'm so in love with you Marie,” he whispered close to her ear. “I'm so sorry I was an idiot, please forgive me, please. I'm nothing without you. You have to know that. Nothing else will matter if you're not with me. Please wake up and forgive me.”
He held her hand and laid his head on the corner of the bed.
“ You are an idiot , but I still love you,” she spoke in his mind.
Brenton lifted up and was looking into her eyes. Her gorgeous, big brown eyes.
“Marie, I'm so glad you're awake,” he said, shifting his body to get completely on his knees.
“Yeah, but my body is so sore.”
“I am so sorry about that. I shouldn't have said anything, but you needed to know everything and...” he was rambling.
She put her finger on his lips, “Shh. I know and I forgive you.”
“You're not mad?”
“No. Helena told me you needed to tell me something and that I should be rational when you did. Sorry I didn't remember that until after I freaked out on you,” she smiled and put a hand on his cheek. “Plus, I heard everything you said and I'm touched by how much you care. But if the law says we can't be together, what can we do?”
“We'll figure it out. Either way, I'm not leaving your side, ever.”
She sat up and gave him a quick peck on his lips. “I don't mind fighting crime, but I will not wear a cape. Deal?”
Brenton laughed and pulled her into a hug. “Deal.”
She got up and stretched and Brenton was relieved that the air was clear and they were good. His nerves were on edge, he was shaking.
Her uncle must have sensed she was up because he walked through the door moments later.
“Glad you're awake. How do you feel?” he asked.
“I'm okay, a little freaked out, but okay. How was I able to do that?”
“You were angry and it must have triggered it. You don't want to rely on that though. I'll teach you to get it under control, don't you worry. I guess we can get started in the morning, in light of what happened today.”
“No unc, I'll be ready in thirty minutes. We don't have time for me to twiddle my thumbs, I've been doing that all my life. I can do this, I promise,” she pleaded.
“ That's my girl ,” Brenton said in her head and she smiled.
Her uncle looked back and forth between the both of them then shook his head. “Okay. I'll see you in thirty. Brenton, I expect you to join her.”
“Yes sir.”
He left and closed the door behind him. Marie sat down on the bed and rubbed the back of her neck. This was going to be a long day.
