18. The Purple Thread #3

The wolf in me presses close to the surface, not taking over, but witnessing.

So does her feral fox. The rhythm builds between us, a primal, tender fucking that’s intimate enough to hurt.

I kiss her mouth, her jaw, the place where her pulse beats wild beneath her skin.

She holds on, then gives in, then holds on harder.

When release takes her, her head falls back and a cry escapes her lips. Her magic blooms through the clearing in a blinding rush of red light, and her pussy clenches around my dick in a series of tight, rhythmic pulses. Mine answers.

Warlock power. Wolf instinct. All the restraint I have worn like armor breaks open into something brighter, hotter. I follow her over the edge with her name in my mouth, my own orgasm tearing through me, pumping my cum deep inside her.

The thread between us blazes. Red twists with gold. Gold deepens. Darkens. Blooms. A living, impossible purple thread braids itself between our chests, passion and fate wound so tightly together that neither can ever be separated from the other.

Fate gasps beneath me. I feel it too.

The bond changes. The forest goes silent. And somewhere under Everwilde, something answers.

For a moment, I cannot breathe. Not because of Fate. Because of everything else.

The forest is silent around us, but beneath the silence something moves. Not physically. Not above ground. Not in the trees or the creek or the moonlit stones beneath my hands.

Under Everwilde. Deep. A pulse answers the new thread between us.

Once. Then again.

Slow. Ancient. Aware.

My warlock senses flare so hard the world fractures into layers.

Creek water. Moonlight. Roots. Ley lines.

The purple bond glowing between Fate and me like a living vein.

And below that, a web I have never sensed clearly before—old channels buried under the town, threaded through theater stone, cemetery earth, gallery walls, prison wards, plumbing tunnels, household thresholds.

Not one curse. A network.

My wolf goes utterly still.

Fate shifts beneath me, breath warm against my throat. “Dorian?”

I look down at her.

That is almost my undoing.

Her hair is spread over moss and dark stone. Her cheeks are flushed. Her eyes are wide, fox-bright and vulnerable in a way she would deny with legal assistance. One hand rests against my chest, right over my heart, as if she can feel every dangerous thing I am trying to contain.

Maybe she can.

“What is it?” she asks.

I brush damp hair back from her face. My hand is not as steady as I want it to be. “Something changed.”

Her brows lift. “I know. It’s purple now.”

Despite the cold fear opening inside me, a laugh scrapes out of my chest. “You are impossible.”

“You say that like it isn’t one of my better qualities.”

“It is among the top five.”

“Only five?”

She peeks up at me from under half-closed eyelashes.

“I am still compiling a growing body of evidence.”

Her smile softens, then fades as she studies me. “Are you sure everything’s alright?”

No.

It is not.

I felt the town answer. I felt something old notice us and something older wake under the noticing. I felt the purple thread strike the buried web like lightning finding a vein of ore.

But I do not understand it yet. And if this week has taught me anything, it is that explaining fear badly can become its own kind of weapon. So I say nothing.

Fate’s fingers trace slowly over my ribs, not seduction now. Grounding. Tenderness with teeth. “Should I be concerned?” she asks.

I should say maybe. I should say yes. I should say the world has just opened under us and I do not know whether it is a path or a mouth. Instead, I lower my forehead to hers.

“Not of this,” I say. “Not of us.”

Her breath catches.

The purple thread pulses between us, warm and steady. No knot. No blackening. No rejection. Whatever answered beneath Everwilde, it did not break what we made.

Yet.

That matters.

Fate closes her eyes. “Good. Because I am very tired and very naked and emotionally unavailable for immediate doom.”

“I will ask doom to schedule an appointment.”

“Preferably after breakfast.”

“And coffee.”

Her laugh is small, sleepy, and beautiful enough to hurt.

I gather her against me, shifting us onto the mossy bank where my body can shield hers from the cold stone. I should get her dressed. I should take her home. I should call Kelly, check my phone, follow procedure, document the impossible.

Instead, for one stolen minute, I hold the woman I have wanted, feared, protected badly, hurt unintentionally, and finally chosen.

Fate’s breathing slows against my chest. She lets out a contented sigh.

A few minutes later, she is asleep, warm and trusting against me beneath the almost full-moon.

I stay awake. Of course I do.

The creek moves beside us. The forest resumes its ordinary night sounds. Somewhere far below, the hidden web lies quiet again.

But I know what I felt.

The happiest thing I have ever chosen may also be the most dangerous.

So I hold Fate close, keep one hand over the purple thread glowing between our bodies, and guard the night like a wolf who finally understands what home feels like.

And what he stands to lose if it is threatened.
