Chapter 29

Talia

Four powers waited for me.

Torren’s fire burned closest, red-gold and steady. Rafe’s storm circled it in silver currents. Sebastian’s shadow flowed beneath both, dark without being empty, while Leander’s frost enclosed the others in a thin blue-white ring.

They should have destroyed one another.

Instead, they held their positions around me.

Waiting for one direction.

I looked through the transparent barriers at the four men who had surrendered their claims to the crown.

For me.

No—not for me alone.

They had chosen one another too. Torren had surrendered rather than strike Leander.

Rafe had trusted Sebastian’s shadows not to consume him.

Sebastian had placed his power beside men he had spent his life studying as rivals, and Leander had used the law he revered to reject the victory he had been raised to pursue.

They had not given me their power so I could defeat them.

They had given it to me because none of us could survive alone.

I lowered my hands.

The elemental streams touched my palms.

Pain came first.

Fire entered my right arm, frost my left. Storm struck my chest, and shadow closed around my spine. Each power demanded a different response. My body tried to separate them, but there was nowhere for them to go.

The clear light beneath my skin intensified.

I gritted my teeth and held on.

“Talia,” Torren called.

I could hear the strain in his voice. He would take the fire back if I asked. All four of them would.

The Trial expected me to contain their power. The altered Stone runes had been designed to make that impossible. The convergence shaft beneath me was already cracking as the combined pressure built.

I could not hold four elements inside one body.

But Refraction had never been about holding them.

It changed direction.

I let the powers pass through me.

Fire crossed frost without extinguishing it. Storm entered shadow without dispersing it. The streams divided inside the clear light, breaking into dozens of smaller currents that moved through my arms, ribs, and spine.

Every color appeared beneath my skin.

My awareness expanded with them.

Torren’s presence reached me first. Heat, fury, and fierce determination filled the connection between us. Beneath it lay fear—not for himself, but for me.

Rafe followed in a rush of silver energy. His courage had never been the absence of fear. It was motion in spite of it, the decision to leap before uncertainty could close around him.

Sebastian’s power entered quietly. I felt his attention moving through the Trial, recognizing connections even now. Behind that control was something warmer, carefully protected and offered only because he had chosen to let me see it.

Bastian.

The private name passed through the bond.

Violet light flared.

Leander came last, steady as the frost surrounding the circle. Duty, regret, restraint, and a devotion he had not allowed himself to name settled beside the others.

None replaced the rest.

Each remained distinct.

All four were with me.

The realization loosened something inside my chest.

My dragon opened her eyes.

She had never been absent. She had not been sleeping somewhere separate, waiting for the right spell to call her forward.

She was the part of me that recognized what others missed—the hidden groove beneath the repaired rune, the fifth beam within the Prism, the four paths within a Trial that everyone else believed were separate.

For years, I had searched for proof that I belonged among dragons.

She had been searching for the others.

The pressure inside me changed.

It no longer pushed outward in wild surges. It gathered behind my ribs with unmistakable purpose.

My body knew what came next.

“I’m going to shift,” I said.

Torren gripped his gate. “Can you control it?”

“No.”

His fire surged with alarm.

“But she can.”

The first clear scale vanished from my wrist.

For one terrible second, I thought I had lost it.

Then every scale appeared at once.

Crystal swept over my arms, shoulders, chest, and legs in a single brilliant wave. My body expanded too quickly for pain to separate into individual sensations. Bones lengthened. Muscles reshaped. My hands struck the platform and became forelegs tipped with transparent claws.

The academy coat disappeared beneath the transformation.

My spine arched.

Wings broke free in a burst of clear-violet light.

They opened above me, vast and translucent, their deep purple membranes threaded with prismatic veins. Red, silver, violet, and blue traveled through them before scattering across the chamber in bands of color.

The central restraints shattered.

The platform collapsed beneath my weight.

I did not fall.

Four elemental streams held me above the convergence shaft.

The transformation completed in one continuous surge. A crystal tail struck the platform behind me. My neck lengthened, and the chamber came into focus through eyes that saw more than light. Magic covered every surface in layered patterns.

I saw the original Trial beneath the sabotage.

The altered Stone runes lay over the true design like black hooks. They bent the channels inward and down, forcing the heirs’ power toward the unstable shaft.

Beneath them, five lines formed a crown.

Not a crown intended for one head.

A formation.

A Crown Wing.

Understanding entered the connection between us.

Rafe laughed.

Even in human form, even through stone and magic, I felt it.

Torren’s astonishment came next, followed by Sebastian’s intense focus and Leander’s quiet certainty.

“Talia,” Torren breathed.

My name sounded different in my dragon hearing.

I turned my head toward him.

His face was visible through the transparent gate. He stared up at me, fire reflecting across my scales.

“You’re beautiful.”

Warmth moved through the bond, and every prismatic vein in my wings brightened.

Rafe’s amusement touched us all. “You made her glow.”

Torren did not look away from me. “Good.”

The Trial reacted.

The false runes blazed black.

Power tore at the connection, trying to separate the four streams. Fire struck frost. Storm ripped through shadow. The balance broke, and the platform dropped several feet toward the convergence shaft.

I spread my wings.

There was no room to fly, but the movement altered the direction of every current around me. The four elements traveled through the crystal structure of my wings and divided into hundreds of brilliant lines.

I directed them toward the gates.

Fire returned to Torren without striking him. Storm entered Rafe’s torc. Shadow flowed back to Sebastian, and frost settled around Leander.

Their surrendered power had not become mine.

It had become ours.

The gates shattered together.

All four men entered the central chamber.

Torren reached me first and placed his palm against the scales of my foreleg. His hand looked small against my transformed body.

I lowered my head.

He touched the ridge above my eye.

The contact sent heat through the bond. My dragon recognized him with an instinctive certainty that was not possession and was not submission.

Fire.

One point of the crown.

Rafe came to my other side. Silver current leapt from his fingers to my scales, racing harmlessly through the crystal.

“I knew you’d have impressive wings,” he said.

My dragon nudged him hard enough to make him stagger.

He grinned. “You understood that.”

Sebastian approached more carefully, studying the bands of color moving beneath my scales. Shadow curled around my claws, and I felt his wonder even though little showed on his face.

“The scale was never colorless,” he said. “It contained every color.”

Neither was I.

I touched my snout to his shoulder.

He closed his eyes.

Leander stopped before me last.

Frost covered one side of his coat, and blood marked his temple. He lowered himself to one knee.

“You don’t kneel to me,” I tried to say.

The sound emerged as a deep crystalline rumble that shook dust from the ceiling.

Leander understood anyway.

“This isn’t surrender,” he said. “It is recognition.”

He pressed one fist over his heart.

“My queen.”

The word entered the bond.

My dragon recoiled from it.

Not because it was wrong.

Because it was incomplete.

I lowered my head until my eyes were level with his and pushed the image I had seen into our connection: five lines, five points, one crown.

Leander inhaled sharply.

“Not yet,” he said.

I touched my snout to his chest.

“Not alone,” he corrected.

The Trial chamber shook.

Above us, the false inscription appeared in black fire.

ONE POWER SHALL PREVAIL.

The altered runes pulled at the men again.

This time, the four of them stood together.

Torren reached for the fire within him, but he did not aim it at another heir. He placed one hand against my scales and sent the power through me.

Rafe joined him.

Then Sebastian.

Then Leander.

I spread my wings and accepted all four streams.

Refraction divided them, crossed them, and gave them a common direction.

Up.

Power struck the ceiling.

The black inscription split down the center.

Stone broke apart, revealing a vertical passage lined with ancient crystal. Dawn light shone far above us, although sunrise had not yet reached the academy grounds.

The Trial wanted one power to prevail.

We gave it one power made from five.

The corrupted Stone runes cracked. Black light poured from them, recoiling toward a seal hidden beneath the central platform.

A familiar authority mark appeared inside it.

A crown above a closed gate.

Malcolm’s office.

The seal began to burn itself away.

Sebastian’s shadow caught it before it vanished. He enclosed the mark in darkness and tore a fragment of carved stone from the floor.

Evidence.

The chamber convulsed.

Large sections of the ceiling collapsed around us.

Torren looked up at the open shaft. “We need to move.”

I lowered one wing toward him.

He understood first.

Torren stepped back and called his dragon.

Fire enclosed him. His human form expanded, becoming the burnished bronze-gold dragon I had seen in training. Molten red traced the edges of his scales, and his dark red wings opened across the chamber.

Rafe shifted next. Silver lightning surrounded his gunmetal body, running along the ridges of his smoky-gray wings.

Shadow folded around Sebastian. When it withdrew, a black-amethyst dragon stood in his place, his deep-purple wings absorbing the light before returning it in violet flashes.

Leander’s transformation filled the chamber with cold. White-silver scales formed beneath a layer of frost, and pale icy-blue wings spread behind him.

Four dragons surrounded me.

Not opponents.

Mine, my dragon thought.

The instinct startled me.

It did not mean that I owned them. It carried recognition, protection, desire, and belonging in equal measure.

The bond returned the same feeling from all four directions.

Ours.

The tower gave another violent shudder.

Torren launched into the vertical passage first, burning away falling debris. Rafe followed, lightning breaking the larger stones before they could strike us. Sebastian’s shadows caught the fragments, and Leander froze the unstable walls long enough to hold them in place.

They created an opening.

I drove my wings downward.

For the first time, my feet left the ground by my own power.

I had entered the Choosing hoping only to witness dragons. Now I flew among them.

The force of it carried me too quickly into the shaft. One wing struck the crystal wall, and pain jarred through the joint.

Rafe dropped beneath me at once.

Torren circled back from above.

Their presence steadied my dragon. I adjusted the angle of my wings the way I had felt Rafe do during our flight in the garden.

The next stroke lifted me cleanly.

We climbed together.

The shaft narrowed near the top. Dawn waited beyond it, pale and cold.

A final barrier formed across the opening.

Words appeared within the stone.

ONE EMERGES.

Torren struck it with fire.

The barrier held.

Leander’s frost spread across it, revealing five small hollows arranged like the points of a crown.

Not one lock.

Five.

I flew to the center.

Torren took the upper point. Rafe moved to the right, Sebastian to the left, and Leander claimed the lowest.

Our powers entered the hollows.

Clear light joined them.

The words changed.

Not the letters.

The meaning.

I felt the Trial recognize us—not as five competitors occupying the same chamber, but as a single formation.

One Crown Wing.

The barrier opened.

We burst into the dawn.

Cold air rushed over my scales as the academy appeared below us. Towers, training fields, courtyards, and the dark roof of the Hall of Crowns spread beneath my wings.

People filled the grounds.

The headmaster stood at the front of the crowd. Camilla was beside him, still clutching the rolled structural plan. Guards surrounded Malcolm near the Hall entrance, although none had placed him in restraints.

Every face turned upward.

Four dragons flew around me in a five-point formation.

Torren’s fire warmed my right wing. Leander’s frost steadied my left. Rafe’s storm lifted beneath us, and Sebastian’s shadows protected our backs.

I had believed emerging meant surviving the others.

The Trial had waited centuries for someone to understand.

Five had entered.

One Crown Wing emerged.
