Alexander lay in the hospital bed, his breathing steady but shallow, even in sleep fighting some invisible war. One hand twitched at the edge of his blanket—always ready, always aware, even unconscious.
He had taken a bullet for me. He crossed an entire city to find me. He held me like he was terrified I’d dissolve if he blinked. And I was carrying his child.
My footsteps were silent when I slipped out of the room. My heart was not.
