2. Kane

Sunday, ten forty-nine AM

I’ve stared at the same blueprint for an hour.

The Moretti Museum cantilever specifications sit open on my laptop screen. I’ve recalculated the steel beam loads three times, and each time my pen reaches the page, I see red lips and defiant blue eyes instead. Unacceptable.

I close the laptop with more force than necessary and move to the kitchen for water I don’t need.

Twenty hours since the argument in Sloane’s apartment. Twenty hours of it replaying without my permission.

The way she looked at me when I stepped too close. That sharp intake of breath. The challenge in her eyes: Then tell me. Prove it.

The pulse fluttering in her throat.

Thank god Sloane came out when she did. Before I did something catastrophic, like close that distance, take her face in my hands, and kiss her until all that fire had somewhere to go.

Last night I stood in a cold shower for twenty minutes. I braced my hands against the tile and stared at the ground until the water went from cold to something I stopped feeling. I ordered my body to cooperate.

Control doesn’t erase desire. It contains it.

My phone chimes.

Subject: Potential Match: Review Requested

Kane,

I have a new member seeking a Dominant for her first guided experience. After reviewing her intake interview, I immediately thought of you. Forwarding the confidential evaluation.

For her first session she’s chosen a blindfold and guided entry.

If you’re interested, let me know by end of day.

— Dominic

I sit back and stare at the attachment Dominic added without opening it.

It’s been fourteen months since I put Margaux on a plane to Berlin, which is when it ended, the way things end when two people are honest with each other.

She’d laid the residency letter on the kitchen table without a word and watched me read it, and I’d said take it without hesitation, because it was right and we both knew it.

The arrangement had been good. She trusted me cleanly, which isn’t a small thing to give someone.

But she’d always been halfway there before I touched her — she came to submission already knowing its shape, already certain.

She gave me her trust the way you hand someone something fragile: both hands, no hesitation. I held it carefully in return.

But careful isn’t the same as earned. What I want is the work of it.

A week after Margaux left, I went to see Dominic. Sat in his office for an hour, longer than I usually need, and he waited the way he does until I could say it clearly.

“I want someone with more fire,” I’d said. “A strong personality. Someone who doesn’t arrive already open. Someone I have to earn.”

Dominic had been quiet for a moment. Then: “You want the resistance.”

“I want what’s on the other side of the resistance,” I’d said. “When it’s real. When she’s chosen it, not defaulted to it.”

He’d nodded once, slowly. “I’ll keep you in mind. When the right one comes through, you’ll know.”

He’d sent six profiles since. I’d read each one with care and returned each one without being able to articulate, precisely, why. Only that the quality I’d described wasn’t there. The fire. The push. The weight of need that would require me to bring everything, because anything less would fail her.

I move to the couch and sit, forearms on my knees, and open the attachment.

Age: 29.

BDSM Experience: None (extensive research).

I slow down.

Member presented as confident and articulate, but became visibly nervous when discussing desires.

Significant shame present around wanting submission.

Ex-partner convinced her that her nature — her fire, her pushback, her refusal to simply comply — makes her fundamentally unsuited for submission.

Has internalized her own personality as the obstacle.

Member disclosed a pattern of faking release with her previous partner — not from lack of arousal, but an inability to let go of control.

Likely to recur unless a Dominant earns her trust specifically, not generically.

She needs someone who can quiet her mind, not just her body — a Dom capable of walking her out of the control loop she gets stuck in.

I stop reading and close my eyes for a moment.

Someone told her her fire was too much, and she believed it.

And her release will be the same fight as everything else. She’ll try to run it, direct it, manage her way through it rather than let it happen to her.

Good.

Anyone can make a willing body come. That’s mechanics. What she needs is someone who won’t rush her past the part where she’s still holding the wheel — who’ll wait her out instead.

Something stirs. I don’t examine it directly. But it surfaces anyway — a woman standing up from a couch because she refused to have an argument from a seated position. Intense eyes. A pulse at her throat.

I set the phone face down on the cushion, and press two fingers to the bridge of my nose.

I sit with that for longer than I mean to. Then I pick the phone back up and read.

Hard Limits: Humiliation | Degradation | Public scenes | Breath play beyond light pressure | Impact play beyond spanking.

Soft Limits: Orgasm denial | Anal (nervous but curious)

Nervous but curious. The honesty is more precise than most people manage about things they’ve had years to examine.

Expressed Desires: Bondage | Sensory play | Praise during scenes | Clear commands | Extended aftercare (non-negotiable).

Dominic’s Assessment: She needs someone who won’t try to tame her fire, but will show her that strength and submission coexist. She’s not looking for an experience.

She’s looking for a dynamic — something built, not borrowed.

Her release will likely be as guarded as her trust — expect her to manage through it rather than surrender to it, at first. What she needs most is to be seen accurately.

The match must understand what that responsibility entails.

I should reply now. This is exactly what I’ve been looking for.

Instead, I put the phone down and go to the gym.

The weights don’t solve it. Neither does the run. My body cooperates. My mind refuses.

The problem is a variable I cannot currently isolate.

Vera Beckett has occupied my attention for twenty-four hours and has not responded to the standard interventions.

She’s my sister’s best friend. She argues on principle, concedes nothing gracefully, and the last thing I said to her before Sloane walked out was close enough to a threat that damage control should be my focus.

Not the specific expression she’d had before. Not the pulse at her throat.

I intend to resolve this.

I pick up the phone, open the attachment, and read it again. The ex who called her too much. The shame around wanting to surrender. The specific precision with which she named her own desire.

A woman who comes in with genuine need and genuine fear and the kind of courage that looks like defiance.

There it is. The thing beneath the scene.

What the last six profiles didn’t have and what this one does — the weight of real need up against real resistance.

Someone who requires full presence because anything less will fail her.

Someone I can give what I’m actually built for: not just control, but the kind of sustained attention that makes control mean something.

The noise in my head settles, and clarity arrives.

I open the reply window and start typing.

I accept.

I open a new document and begin making notes.

First scene, inexperienced sub: Build trust from zero. Establish safety. Read every response. Adjust in real time.

Restraints: silk, not rope. Let her feel held without fear.

Praise: specific, genuine, frequent.

Aftercare: extended, attentive. Non-negotiable for her — and for me.

That evening I take out my favorite black silk tie.
