4. Vera #2
My pulse spikes. The silk pulls taut against my wrists.
Surrender isn’t for women like you, Vera.
“Yellow.”
The word tears out of me.
The vibrator disappears instantly.
And I’m shaking. But not from wanting.
His hands find my thighs, both of them, warm and steady.
“Tell me what’s going on.”
“I can’t—“ The words come out jagged. “I can’t do it. I keep trying and I can’t stop trying and—“
I pull against the silk. Not toward him. Away. Toward anywhere that isn’t here with this thing I cannot outrun.
“I need to go. I’m sorry, I just — I need to go.”
“Vera—”
“No.” The word comes out sharp. “Don’t. Don’t Vera me, I’m telling you I can’t do this.
” My voice is rising and I can hear it rising and I can’t stop it.
“Damon was right. He was right about all of it and I’ve spent years pretending he wasn’t but look at me.
I cannot let go for one hour. One hour, Kane, and I spent the whole thing trying to steer and redirect and manage and—“ My throat closes. “What does that tell you? That I’m terrible at this. That I’m not made for this. That everything he said was—“
“Vera.”
“I said don’t—“
My chest is heaving and my eyes are burning.
“I’m not made for this,” I say again. “He said someone like me couldn’t submit. And he was right. I’ve proven it tonight.”
Suddenly the silk loosens at my wrists until my arms drop heavy into my lap. Still bound, but held differently. Then his fingers find the blindfold ribbon and draw it away.
The light is low and amber.
And Kane is right in front of me.
Close. Eye level. The first thing I register is his eyes, which are the gray of early morning rather than incoming weather.
Steady. Certain. Watching me with an attention so complete it feels like being held even though he’s barely touching me.
I want to look away. I don’t.
“I want to leave,” I say.
“I know.” He doesn’t move. “You can. The door is right there and you can walk through it and I won’t stop you.” A pause. “But you called yellow, not red. So some part of you isn’t done yet.”
My jaw tightens.
“And let me set the record straight. Damon was wrong.” Simple. Immediate. No softening. “And every part of you that believed him is also wrong.”
“You don’t know—“
“Yes I do. Because you came here and sat in Dominic’s office and told him your deepest truth. You walked in here tonight and stayed. You fought me through every single thing I gave you—“ his voice doesn’t waver, “—because you are constitutionally, fundamentally incapable of doing anything halfway.”
“Yes.” My voice comes out raw and a little wild. “That’s exactly the problem. Thank you for clarifying.”
“That’s not a flaw, Vera.”
“It clearly is, because I just spent an hour—”
“Stop.”
Not loud. Not harsh. Just — final.
My mouth closes.
He holds my gaze for a long moment, long enough that I feel the full weight of his attention, long enough that I can’t look away.
“Strength and surrender aren’t opposites,” he says.
“They’re the same material under different conditions.
But you can’t control your way into letting go.
You’ve been trying to manage the surrender, and it doesn’t work like that.
It was never going to work like that. That’s not your failure. That’s just physics.”
“Then how—”
“You give me the reins.” His voice settles.
Lower, certain. “You stop running the analysis and you let me think for both of us. Your mind, your body, your responses — they belong to me when you’re in this room.
Not because I’ve taken them.” He holds my gaze.
“Because you’re choosing to hand them over. ”
“I don’t know if I can do that.”
“I don’t need you to know. I need you to try.” He waits. “And when the voice comes back, you look at me. Right here. Let me be louder than it.”
I look at him. Really look, the way he’s asking me to.
His eyes are steady. No judgment in them, no impatience, no trace of the frustration I’ve been bracing for. Just Kane, close and certain, watching me the way he has watched me all night.
“Do you want to stop?” he asks.
“I don’t know.” I look away. At the floor. At my hands in my lap, the silk still loose around my wrists.
“Vera.” Quiet. “Look at me.”
I make myself find his eyes again.
“Tell me what color it is.”
The voice in my head says red. Says you’ve already proven everything Damon said, just go, just stop, just—
I breathe in. All the way down, the way I couldn’t manage an hour ago.
His eyes don’t leave mine.
I breathe out.
And underneath the voice, underneath the fear and the shame and the years of believing I was broken — something else. Something that has been here all night, patient, waiting for the rest of me to quiet down enough to hear it.
“Green,” I say, steadier than I expected.
His expression doesn’t change. But something in it warms, almost imperceptibly, like a light turned up by a single degree.
“Green,” he says back. Like a promise he’s making as much as receiving.
His hands find my bound wrists and lift them back above my head, securing them again, the silk taut, my arms stretched. The vulnerability of it moves through me and the urge to manage it rises instantly — to say something, to deflect, to take back even one inch of ground.
“Here.” His voice, low and certain.
My gaze finds his. One hand moves to my waist — warm, present, steady. Then his other hand moves.
Following the inside of my thigh, higher, and his eyes don’t leave mine. Not once.
His fingers find me and I inhale sharply, every muscle pulling taut, and I try to look away.
“Stay with me.”
I stay.
His fingers move. Slow. Deliberate. Reading me the way he reads everything — with complete attention, adjusting by degrees, nothing wasted. His thumb finds my clit and circles, the lightest pressure, barely there, and a moan escapes without permission.
“Good girl.”
The praise lands somewhere below my sternum and spreads. I didn’t expect that — the way two words could dissolve something I’ve been clenching for hours.
His hand at my waist begins to move. Slow strokes up my ribs, learning the geography of me, like he’s committed to knowing every inch of me before he’s done. My breathing shifts.
“You’re doing so well.” His thumb firms slightly, circles with more intention. Then two fingers press inside me, one slow stroke, and I gasp and my arms pull against the silk above — not fighting, just needing somewhere to put it. “That’s what I want. Give me that.”
I give it to him.
Or I try to.
Something is there — close, circling, real — and then it isn’t.
It slides just out of reach every time I get near it, like chasing a shape at the edge of vision that disappears the moment I look straight at it.
My body knows it’s supposed to be simple.
My mind keeps standing in the doorway, arms crossed, timing me.
He doesn’t change the rhythm. Doesn’t speed up, doesn’t slow down, like he could do this for another hour without noticing the difference.
The thought arrives uninvited: how long is too long. How long before he’s just being patient because he’s too polite to stop. And underneath that, older and quieter: it would be easier to just get there. Give him the sound. Let this be over before he notices it isn’t actually happening.
I know exactly how to do it. I’ve done it before.
So I close my eyes and let my back arch. Let the moan come out a half-second early, pitched a little higher than what’s actually building in me.
His hand stills. “What do you think you’re doing?”
I open my eyes. “I don’t know what you mean.”
“Vera.”
“I’m not doing anything, I just—“
“I don’t let my submissives fake it.” No heat in it. Just fact, laid down like a rule that predates her. “Not once. Not ever.”
Heat floods my face and I look away.
“I wasn’t trying to—“
“You were.” A pause. “Look at me.”
I lift my eyes to meet his.
No anger. No disappointment. Just calm, absolute — the same calm he’s carried all night, like nothing about this costs him anything at all.
“Stop managing my patience. It was never yours to manage. I have all night.”
I have nothing to say to that.
His hand leaves my hip and finds my cheek instead, his thumb tracing once along the bone.
“You’re not here to perform for me, Vera. You’re here to learn how to let go.” His voice drops, quieter. “So trust me. Let me get you there. Can you do that?”
“I can try.”
“Good girl.”
His hand leaves my cheek and moves lower, slow, tracing the line of my throat, my collarbone, the curve of my breast — steady, like he has nowhere else to be. Then lower still. His thumb finds my clit again and begins its slow, patient circle.
“Your body already knows how to do this.” His voice, even, certain. “It’s your mind that keeps getting in the way.” A pause, his thumb never breaking rhythm. “So stop listening to it. Let your body talk instead. It’s been trying to tell you something all night.”
I try.
I stop chasing the thought and go looking for the feeling instead — his thumb, the exact place it touches, the exact pressure. Nothing else. Just that.
And underneath the trying, something shifts. Heat gathers low and sudden, sharper than anything the last hour has given me.
His thumb doesn’t stop. Doesn’t hurry either.
His fingers curl and my whole body arches and the sound I make is nothing I’ve ever let anyone hear — dragged from somewhere I didn’t know he’d reached. His eyes stay on mine through all of it.
“There you are.” Rougher now, but steady. “That’s you, Vera. Just you.”
Just you.
The words reach somewhere Damon spent years hollowing out.
His fingers don’t stop. His thumb keeps its slow, relentless circle, and something in me that has been standing guard all night finally sways on its feet.
“That’s it.” His voice, low. “You’re so close. I can feel it.”
I am. I can feel it too. The building sensation tightens. My thighs are shaking. My arms pull against the silk.
His lips find my forehead. Soft. Unhurried. Nothing like the rest of tonight.
“Let go, Vee.”
