Chapter 31

Reyansh

It’s already been a week since we returned from the successful international conference trip, yet Karan is nowhere to be seen. When I asked Amyra about him, she simply said his internship was over. But how was that possible? Wasn’t he supposed to complete the internship with us?

Why would he leave without any prior notice, or had he been hiding it all along?

Even if he was meant to leave, why would he take a separate flight from Singapore to India?

He could have at least accompanied us, considering it was his last time with us, especially with Amyra.

And why didn’t he even visit B she freezes, eyes widening, lips parting in a sharp gasp. The silence stretches between us, heavy with possibilities.

Does she really love someone? And if so, what happens next? The anticipation of her answer hangs in the air, waiting to reshape everything we know.

“Ames?”

“No, Rey. I don’t love anyone.” She looks away, and her strange behaviour only deepens my unease.

“Then why are you so disinterested in relationships?”

“That’s personal, Rey. You shouldn’t invade someone’s space.”

“Ames, what’s happening? We’ve been friends forever—why the sudden distance?”

“Because I need my privacy, Reyansh. It’s hard to share everything.”

“I just want to understand what’s holding you back from a relationship.”

I feel my voice rising, and I see how she tenses.

“Can’t you focus on your own life instead of intruding into mine? Some things take time.”

I wrap my arm around her waist, gently pulling her closer, wanting her to see my seriousness.

“Amyra, you mean the world to me.”

“Are you serious? What are you talking about?”

She pushes against my chest, trying to create space, but I hold her firm, our bodies just touching. I want her to hear me.

“This truth has been with me for years. I can’t keep it inside anymore. I need you to know how I feel.” With us about to be sent to different branches, I know this is my moment.

“What are you saying?” she asks, her voice sharp, but I stand my ground.

“I’m deeply in love with you, Amyra.” In that instant, she shoves me away, looking horrified.

“How can you say that? You’re with my sister!” Her eyes are wide, fear written all over her face.

“This isn’t right, Reyansh. How could you do this to her?”

“I ended things with Aditi.”

“What?!” Her tears flow as disbelief takes over, and I feel the weight of my confession.

“Yes, Amyra. I broke up with Aditi three days ago.”

Her reaction hits hard, a sharp slap echoes in the room, and I touch my cheek, feeling the sting. When I look at her again, she’s crumpling inward, hands over her mouth, trembling with silent sobs. In that moment, I wonder if I will ever be forgiven for the paths I’ve taken.
