Chapter 23 - Devin ’The Mercenary’ Mercer

Sitting in interrogation, I was pissed. My ass is locked up, but the mufucka who needed to be locked up was at home laughing at my ass.

Boy when I’m wrong about someone, I be WRONG!

I would have never thought Brianna would do some shit like this.

Actually, that was Blaise that did that.

It had to be. Cold, calculated, and selfish.

She laid up with me for months and never said a word.

Hearing the door open, I looked at the officer and the smug ass look on his face had me ready to knock it off.

He really thought he knew what was going on.

I wasn’t worried about him. For some reason, I was still shocked by Blaise’s actions.

She should be at the station telling them what happened and that she wasn’t pressing charges, but I’ve been here two hours and her ass has yet to make an appearance.

“You still not talking?”

“Lawyer.” His ass had the nerve to laugh.

“You think your attorney gone get you out of this? We have you on body cam attacking her. Your ass is done.”

“My lawyer a beast, but I think my money gone get me out of it. I’ll pay them couple of fines, and you still gone be here broke as fuck harassing the next nigga that’s making more money than you.

” His jaw line jumped as he stood up. I thought he was about to beat my ass, but he walked out the room.

He left me in there for another twenty minutes before he walked back in with my lawyer.

“Let’s go.” Smirking at the officer, I put my hands out for him to remove the cuffs.

“We’re going to take your money, but we’re going to take your freedom as well.

“Take the dick out yo ass. Goofy mufucka.” My lawyer pushed me out the door and didn’t say a word until we got outside. This nigga was acting like his life was on the line.

“Do you know how many people have a gift, but still don’t make it?”

“Mannn, it’s a lil ass domestic. You acting like I killed somebody.” Grabbing his phone, he scrolled to a news station and pressed play.

“Devin Mercer self proclaimed bad boy of the NBA was arrested today in a West Suburb. Sources tell us that it was the home of sports news anchor Blaise Monroe. For those of you who don’t know, Blaise has been reporting on Mercer for a while about his lack of skills.

Sources close to the anchor has told us that he was very upset with her and have been threatening to shut her up.

He's come up to the studio numerous times threatening her, and on tonight, he seems to have acted on it. A witness told us she was scared for her life, so she immediately called the police who arrived on the scene moments later. Mercer is expected to get out on bond, but the seriousness of the charges might finally put him away for a long time. John, you’re in Miami have you gotten any quotes from the team? ”

“We’ve talked to the GM, and they have placed Mercer on a suspension and his future depends on conclusion of the case.”

“Is this shit still a joke to you? Everything you’ve worked for is on the line because of this stupidity. Do you know the favors I had to call in to get you bond?”

“Man, chill out. I was not stalking Blaise. We were fucking around. There is no way she will testify to that shit,” I said the words out of my mouth, but I didn’t believe it no more than he did.

“You better hope so. Oh, and I’m sure I shouldn’t have to say this, but stay the fuck away from Blaise.

” Not wanting to deal with anything or anyone tonight, I had him drop me off back at the hotel.

Flan booked the room under his name and paid them to allow me in through the service entrance.

“Here’s your key. Stay out of sight please. ”

“Cool, but my car and bags are at Blaise’s house.”

“I’ll have someone go get it. Someone from the front desk will bring the bags and keys up here to you. I’ll be in touch.”

“When they do, I’m on the first flight out.” Flan nodded, left out, and I flopped down on the couch. Turning my phone on, I scrolled the internet looking at all of the reporting’s and the weight of it all finally came down.

“It was all good just a week ago,” I said out loud to myself before laughing. I tried to search my mind for signs, and I thought about our date when she came to Miami.

“Why are we at the bay?” Brianna was looking as if she was ready to get out of dodge.

“This is our last night together here. I wanted to do something special.” She looked at me with her face balled up causing me to laugh.

“Rich people always forget that they are black. You know our kind don’t do water.” Grabbing her hand, I pulled her on my yacht and signaled for the captain to take off. I didn’t want to give her a chance to freak out and change her mind.

“I’m a cliché to a certain extent, but I love the water. It’s peaceful out here.”

“You better not let me fall off this boat, and if this bitch sinks, just know I’m gone be just like Rose. Your ass ain’t getting on that wood with me because I told yo ass not to come out here.” Laughing, I wrapped my arms around her waist and just inhaled her scent.

“You so fucking beautiful to me, shorty ma.”

“You make it hard to stay mad at you.” Turning around to face me, she placed a soft kiss on my lips.

“Aight Ms. Ali can you take this wrap off your face now. Ain’t nobody on the water but fish and a lil gator.”

“Stop playing with me. I’ll fry the fuck out that gator if it comes anywhere near this boat.

” She talked shit, but she removed her disguise.

I loved how she listened and left all the extra shit off when she was with me.

We sat down and the waiter poured us a drink.

Once we were settled on the water, I got in her business.

“So, what did you do when you got out of school?”

“I interned for Garrett before I became an anchor.”

“You went straight to it huh?”

“Why not? That was the point, right?” She looked at me and I could see the drive in her eyes.

“It’s all work and no play with you. Damn, you don’t want kids?” Blaise shifted uncomfortably before staring out at the water.

“I have everything I need in life.” Her answer was vague, but I accepted it.

“Well, it’s complete now that I’m back. First chance I get, I’m putting a baby in yo ass.”

“I don’t remember you being this chatty when we were in school.” I smacked her hard on the ass.

“Did you just call me a bitch?” We both fell out laughing and the shit just felt right.

I shook my head remembering how she played me during that conversation.

Blaise knew exactly what she was doing. Me and shorty spent the night out there on the water vibing all night and she didn’t think I needed to know about my daughter.

Going to my call log, I was about to do exactly what Flan told me not to do.

Before I could hit send, Twin popped up on my screen.

Answering it, I put it on speaker when I heard the knock on my door.

“Yeah, Twin.”

“So, you out there taking coochie? I raised you better than that I know.” I grabbed my keys and bag from the worker before closing the door. Scrolling to my contact, I messaged him and asked him if I could get a private plane out tonight. “I know you hear me talking to you lil takey takey.”

“Ma, chill out. I got too much shit on my mind.”

“You gone have more on it when I get my hands on you. I taught you better than to put your hands on women. You done lost all your mind behind that girl and I don’t like it.” Since he could get me out of here tonight, I grabbed my shit and headed out the door.

“Say man, if you not gone try to find out what happened, I don’t have anything to say.”

“Son, they released the footage. This is not a ‘your word against hers’ kind of situation. Why would you put your hands on her like that? You know I raised you better than that.”

“Twin, we have a five year old daughter and she never told me.” The line went silent. I put my stuff in the trunk, climbed in the car and she was still quiet. “You still there?”

“Yeah, I’m watching the video again.” I drove off and headed towards the hanger while she remained quiet.

“Did you hear what I said to you?”

“Yes, son! I heard your slow ass. I was watching the video again because I’m trying to figure out why that’s all you did. I taught you better than that. You should have given her an uppercut that sent her ass to me, so I could stomp her out.”

“Ma, you can barely walk to go piss. How you gone fight? She was gone tear yo ass up.”

“I was gone roll her ass over with my chair.” We both laughed, but you could tell from the tone we were very aware that this wasn’t funny. “Did you get to see her? What does she look like?”

“She looks like Brianna with the berry mark. She was so fucking beautiful ma. I didn’t get a chance to talk to her though. All I have is that image of her opening the door. Why would she do that to me?”

“I don’t know son, but you will get to see her.

We just have to do it like them white people.

We’re going through the courts.” I talked to her until I got to the hanger and told her I’ll see her tomorrow and hung up.

When I got on the plane, I didn’t even wait for takeoff before I closed my eyes and went to sleep. A nigga was exhausted.

****

When I pulled up at the house, I shook my head.

It was a million reporters on my lawn. It was no way around it, so I pulled into the driveway.

Keeping my head down, I ignored the million questions and the cameras in my face.

Going in the house, I locked the door and headed straight to the bar.

Noticing movement, my head whipped around in the direction it came from.

Seeing Landon there, I relaxed. If one of those reporters got in my house, they were about to lose their life tonight.

“I know what they are saying on the news is not true. I don’t need you to tell me what happened, I just felt you could use a friend right now.” I nodded before downing my drink.

“You hungry?”

“You know it.” We laughed as we headed to the game room. Grabbing my phone, I placed us both an order.
