Chapter 8

Korvex

I really enjoyed that kiss. The way her cheeks flushed when I kneaded her thigh, the way she got embarrassed when I asked her questions. I enjoyed all of it.

I frowned. I was enjoying this far too much. This was what I saw happen every day. This was life. Hundreds of years I had been left alone to only witness others experience such pleasures. A deep burning feeling in my chest, in my body, wanted to experience more. With Adela.

I sighed.

This was not my duty. I was not supposed to be here experiencing these things. My ward, my job was to protect the town from the normal people who would hurt the magical society. Being here in Adela’s home, on her couch, was not protecting that.

Her eyes tracked me, sharp to the change in my behavior.

Something inside me, something I didn’t understand, wanted to touch her, to kiss her again. I wanted her body to press against mine. It was a burning need.

I want this.

I wanted a life that was more than just watching others have one. Why did they get to experience it and I was left to be jealous? I had protected this town for centuries. It owed me at least some of this, at least for now.

“Korvex… is something wro—”

The lights surged in the room. She looked around frantically before popping off the lampshades. Beneath them are stones, not glass that lit them.

“These glow stones shouldn’t surge like that. They don’t use electricity. They’re rune wards. Just glowing stones.”

It was as if Wych Valley was telling me I was being selfish. I let out another sigh.

“Okay,” she put the lampshade back over the stone and sat back down beside me. “You can’t be deep sighing like that. What is wrong?”

“I am supposed to be protecting the town. I cannot be doing that here.”

“What do you mean by that?” She lifted up my arm and ran her finger down my side, the runes illuminating as she did so. “Is it these things?”

“Yes, they are my runes. My place in the town is to ensure the magic stays hidden from humans.”

“Oh…” she sat back and marveled at me again, “so that’s why things have been messing up. Your runes were weakening.”

“Now I am not there at all! Things will begin to breakdown all over your town.”

Her finger ran across the runes again, causing a shiver to ripple across me. Her touch was so warm. Everywhere she touched, my cool skin warmed.

“Why do you have to be on the pedestal? Why can’t you physically spend time with the community and protect us that way?”

She ran her hand down my sides again, making em shudder at her touch. I knew she was just examining the runes, but I was enjoying it. I just wanted her to touch me more. Her hands continued moving across my side, dancing to my chest.

“You were carved with such care,” she said as she continued to examine me. “Truly, you are magnificent.”

If my cheeks could redden like hers, they would have at that moment.

“Thank you.”

She smiled at me as she pulled her hands back. The absence of her touch was already filling me with sadness. She was right. Why did I have to stay on the pedestal? Why couldn’t I experience the community?

This woman, she was doing something to me I never thought possible. She was warming me, giving me life. Her soul spark literally unfroze me. She said it was magic’s way of telling two souls they were compatible. What was magic if not fate itself?

Magic was very confusing about what it wanted.

Did it want me to continue acting on my desires, or did it want me to shy away from them?

Even the memory of her touch on my skin warmed me.

I was sitting at a witch’s home, touching her thighs, kissing her lips, all because magic had willed us to be together.
