CHAPTER SIX
THE HEARTBEARER'S SECRET
That night, Elara couldn't sleep.
She found Kael standing beneath the red moon.
"You're awake."
"So are you."
He smiled.
She walked beside him.
"Are you angry?"
"At who?"
"Your mother."
Elara was silent.
"Maybe."
Kael took her hand.
"Whatever she did, she did it because she believed it would save you."
"She still lied."
"I know."
Elara looked at him.
"What if everyone has been lying to me?"
Kael shook his head.
"I haven't."
She smiled.
"I know."
He pulled her closer.
For a moment, the darkness disappeared.
Then Kael whispered,
"There's something I need to tell you."
Elara looked up.
"What?"
"My family isn't only connected to Aetheria."
"Then what?"
"My bloodline created the first Heartbearer."
Elara stared at him.
"What?"
"My ancestor was the first person to carry the Heart."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I was afraid."
"Of me?"
"Of losing you."
Elara touched his face.
"You won't lose me."
Suddenly, the red moon turned black.
Kael looked upward.
"We have to go."
