Chapter 32 The Call Behind the Silence

The cool night breeze swept across the balcony as the sounds of applause from the ballroom slowly faded into the background.

Aadhira stood near the railing, the city lights glittering below.

Her phone continued to vibrate.

She glanced at the screen for a brief second before answering.

"Hello."

For a moment...

Neither side spoke.

Then a calm, familiar voice broke the silence.

"One identity has been revealed."

Aadhira's expression remained unchanged.

"So I heard."

The voice continued,

"The first move went exactly as expected."

A brief silence followed.

Then came another question.

"When will the next revelation happen?"

Aadhira slowly looked through the glass wall toward the ballroom, where people were still congratulating one another.

Her gaze lingered on the crowd for a second before she answered in her usual composed tone.

"Not yet."

"There is still time."

"Everything is going exactly as planned."

The mysterious caller remained silent for a few seconds.

Finally...

"As you wish."

The call disconnected.

Aadhira lowered the phone and slipped it back into her clutch.

For the first time that evening...

A faint breeze brushed against her face.

She closed her eyes for only a heartbeat before opening them again.

The calmness returned instantly.

Without another thought...

She walked back toward the ballroom.

Inside the grand hall...

Arjun stood with Siddharth, Rohan and Dev.

None of them had missed the way his eyes had unconsciously followed Aadhira when she left.

Rohan folded his arms with a mischievous grin.

"So..."

Arjun looked at him.

"So... what?"

Rohan laughed.

"You've been looking toward that balcony for the last five minutes."

"If I didn't know better, I'd say you're waiting for someone."

Arjun frowned.

"I was simply wondering why she stepped out."

Siddharth raised an eyebrow.

"Only wondering?"

"You looked concerned."

Arjun immediately denied it.

"You're imagining things."

Dev smiled faintly.

"Interesting."

"Earlier you barely spoke to her."

"Now you're noticing when she leaves the room."

Arjun sighed.

"You three are impossible."

Rohan placed a dramatic hand over his heart.

"We're not impossible."

"We're experienced."

"We've known you for years."

"You never pay attention to anyone unless they matter."

Arjun shook his head.

"Don't make stories where there aren't any."

Siddharth chuckled softly.

"We aren't making stories."

"We're simply observing."

"You've asked more questions about Aadhira in the last few days than you've asked about anyone in months."

Arjun fell silent.

Was that true?

Without realizing it...

He had begun wondering about the woman standing beside him in name...

His wife.

He still wasn't sure why.

It wasn't love.

At least...

He didn't think it was.

Perhaps it was curiosity.

Or perhaps...

It was respect.

Before he could untangle the thoughts in his mind...

Rohan nudged him.

"There."

Arjun instinctively turned.

Aadhira had returned.

She walked toward them with the same composed elegance she carried everywhere.

Not hurried.

Not nervous.

Simply calm.

For reasons he couldn't explain...

He felt relieved seeing her return.

The realization caught him off guard.

Relieved?

He silently questioned himself.

"What is wrong with me these days?"

He quickly pushed the thought aside as Aadhira reached them.

Arjun cleared his throat.

"Aadhira."

She stopped beside him.

"Yes?"

"I want you to meet my friends properly."

He turned toward the three men.

"This is Siddharth Khanna."

"My closest friend."

"Siddharth is the CEO of Khanna Industries."

Siddharth smiled warmly.

"It's nice to finally meet you."

"I've heard a great deal about you."

Aadhira politely folded her hands.

"The pleasure is mine."

Arjun continued.

"This is Rohan Singhania."

"The loudest person in our friend circle."

Rohan pretended to be offended.

"Loud?"

"I prefer 'full of life.'"

His playful expression made Aadhira's lips curve ever so slightly.

It wasn't quite a smile...

But it was enough for the four men to notice.

Rohan dramatically placed a hand on his chest.

"Well..."

"I've officially achieved something tonight."

"I made Mrs. Rathore almost smile."

Arjun shot him a warning look.

"Behave."

Rohan raised both hands innocently.

"I am behaving."

"I'm only stating facts."

Even Dev couldn't suppress a quiet laugh.

Finally, Arjun turned toward the last member of the group.

"And this is Dev Oberoi."

"My friend and business associate."

Dev nodded respectfully.

"Congratulations on your award."

"It was well deserved."

Aadhira inclined her head.

"Thank you."

"It means a lot coming from someone in the business world."

Rohan looked between Arjun and Aadhira before speaking again.

"You know..."

"I used to think Arjun was impossible to surprise."

"But I think you've managed to do it twice in one evening."

Arjun looked at him.

"Twice?"

"The first time by becoming his wife."

"The second time by turning out to be the owner of one of the country's best hospitals."

Siddharth smiled.

"I agree."

"You've certainly given all of us something to talk about."

Aadhira remained composed.

"I never intended to surprise anyone."

"I simply focused on my work."

Her answer was simple.

Without pride.

Without false humility.

Just honesty.

For a brief moment...

The four friends exchanged silent glances.

Each of them understood why Arjun had begun noticing her.

There was something different about Aadhira.

Something that couldn't be explained in a single conversation.

And unknowingly...

Arjun himself had already started searching for that answer.

Rathore Mansion...

It was nearly midnight by the time the Rathore family returned home.

The drive back had been unusually quiet.

Everyone was still trying to process the biggest surprise of the evening.

Aadhira Devraj...

The owner of one of the country's most prestigious hospitals.

Even after entering the mansion, the discussion continued in the living room.

Rajveer slowly sat down on the sofa and smiled thoughtfully.

"I have met countless successful entrepreneurs throughout my life, but I never imagined that our daughter-in-law was quietly building such a remarkable institution."

Savitri nodded in agreement.

"The most beautiful thing isn't her success."

"It is that she never once used her success to make herself look superior."

"She simply remained humble."

Raghav leaned back comfortably.

"She had every opportunity to tell us who she really was."

"But she chose to let her work speak for itself."

Mahendra smiled.

"That kind of confidence is rare."

Nandhini looked towards the staircase where Aadhira had walked minutes ago.

"I think we judged her far too quickly."

"She's far more capable than any of us imagined."

Vivaan, who had been quietly listening, suddenly spoke with an innocent smile.

"I already knew Aadhira bhabhi was amazing."

Everyone looked at him.

Rajveer chuckled.

"And how did you know that?"

Vivaan answered proudly,

"Because she always listens whenever I talk."

"Even if she's busy, she never ignores me."

"And she never treats me like I'm too small to understand things."

A warm smile spread across Savitri's face.

She gently kissed Vivaan's forehead.

"Our little prince has become a very good judge of character."

Everyone laughed softly.

Standing slightly away from the family...

Arjun listened silently.

He didn't add anything to the conversation.

But hearing everyone appreciate Aadhira somehow made him... happy.

It was a strange feeling.

One he couldn't explain.

---

A few minutes later...

Arjun quietly entered their bedroom.

Aadhira had already walked inside.

She removed her earrings one by one and carefully placed them inside the jewellery box.

Then she removed the bracelet from her wrist before placing it beside the others.

Everything she did was calm...

Neat...

Almost graceful.

Arjun stood near the window.

Without realizing it...

His eyes remained on her.

Aadhira noticed his reflection through the mirror.

She turned around slowly.

"Is there something you want to ask me?"

Her voice was calm.

Neither cold nor warm.

Simply composed.

Arjun blinked, realizing that he had been staring.

He looked away for a brief moment before answering.

"No."

Aadhira observed him quietly.

She knew he was surprised.

Anyone would have been.

After a short silence, she spoke again.

"You're not curious?"

"Most people would have several questions after what happened tonight."

She paused briefly before continuing.

"You don't want to ask why I never told anyone that I'm the owner of the hospital?"

Arjun remained silent for a few seconds.

Then he slowly walked towards her, stopping a comfortable distance away.

"I won't lie."

"I was surprised."

"Actually... shocked would be the better word."

Aadhira waited patiently for him to finish.

"But surprise doesn't mean I have the right to question you."

His voice was calm.

Just like hers.

"Just because we're married..."

"...doesn't mean you've lost your individuality."

"You have your own life."

"Your own achievements."

"And your own reasons for keeping certain things private."

He looked directly into her eyes.

"I don't want you to feel that marriage has taken away your freedom."

"When you feel comfortable telling me something..."

"I'll gladly listen."

"But until then..."

"I'll wait."

"There are some things a person should share because they want to..."

"...not because they feel obligated."

Silence filled the room once again.

Aadhira looked at him without saying a word.

She hadn't expected that answer.

Not from someone who had every reason to question her.

Instead...

He had given her trust.

A small smile slowly appeared on her face.

It wasn't the polite smile she showed everyone.

Nor the faint smile she occasionally gave Vivaan.

This one was genuine.

Soft.

Warm.

For just a brief moment...

The cold walls around her heart seemed to lower.

Arjun saw it.

And unknowingly...

His own lips curved into a small smile.

He couldn't explain why.

Seeing her smile...

Made him happy.

Aadhira noticed his expression.

"Thank you."

Her voice was softer than before.

Arjun shook his head lightly.

"You don't have to thank me."

"I simply meant every word."

She held his gaze for another second before giving a small nod.

"I know."

Those two words carried more meaning than either of them realized.

A quiet understanding had formed between them.

No promises.

No grand confessions.

Just trust.

Aadhira switched off the bedside lamp before lying down on her side of the bed.

"Good night, Arjun."

For the first time...

His name didn't sound distant.

It sounded... comfortable.

Arjun lay down beside her.

"Good night, Aadhira."

The room fell silent.

Outside...

The moon illuminated the balcony through the curtains.

Inside...

Neither of them realized that something had quietly changed between them.

There were still unanswered questions.

Still hidden truths.

Still countless misunderstandings waiting to be uncovered.

But tonight...

A small thread of trust had been woven between two hearts that had once been complete strangers.

And sometimes...

The strongest relationships didn't begin with love.

They began with trust.

To be continued....
