Chapter 48 - Home, But Not at Peace
Author's Note ??
Hi, my lovely readers!
Just a small note before you start this chapter. I've made a slight change to Vivaan's character and personality because I felt it would fit the upcoming storyline better and help develop some important relationships in the future.
I hope you won't mind this little change and will continue to shower him with the same love you've always given him. Thank you for always supporting my story and trusting my vision.
Happy reading! ??
The grand iron gates of the Rathore Mansion slowly slid open as the black luxury SUV rolled inside.
The evening sky was painted in hues of orange and gold, casting a warm glow over the magnificent mansion that stood proudly in the middle of acres of lush gardens.
Every corner of the entrance was decorated with fresh marigold garlands, fragrant jasmine strings, and glowing diyas, making the mansion look more like a palace awaiting the return of its prince and princess.
Inside the car, Aadhira looked out of the window, taking in the familiar sight.
It had only been a month since they had left for London, yet somehow... coming back felt different.
She wasn't returning as a guest.
She wasn't returning as someone trying to earn a place.
She was returning home.
Her fingers instinctively tightened around the end of her saree.
Sensing her nervousness, Arjun quietly reached for her hand and intertwined their fingers.
"You've faced boardrooms full of billionaires without blinking," he whispered with a teasing smile.
She turned towards him.
"And now you're nervous?"
Aadhira smiled softly.
"This feels more difficult."
Arjun raised an eyebrow.
"My family?"
She slowly nodded.
"They've accepted me... but I still want to become someone they can truly rely on."
Arjun looked at her for a long second before gently pressing a kiss against the back of her hand.
"You already are."
Before she could respond, the driver stopped the car.
"We've reached, sir."
Karan, who had been waiting near the entrance, dramatically threw both his hands into the air.
"Finally! I was beginning to think London adopted you both."
The entire family burst into laughter.
Arjun stepped out first before opening the door for Aadhira.
The moment she stepped out, a cool breeze brushed against her face, carrying with it the familiar fragrance of home.
Her eyes lifted toward the entrance.
The entire Rathore family stood there, smiling warmly.
For a brief second, memories of another doorstep flashed before her eyes...
A place where she had once walked away carrying nothing except heartbreak.
She blinked.
The painful memory disappeared as she looked at the people waiting for her.
This time...
Someone was waiting for her to come home.
Dadiji lovingly performed their aarti while softly praying for their happiness and long married life.
Aadhira respectfully bent down with Arjun to seek the elders' blessings.
One after another, warm hands rested upon their heads, blessing them with happiness, strength, and togetherness.
The heaviness inside Aadhira's heart slowly melted away.
Then...
"So..." Karan folded his arms dramatically. "Enough with the emotional welcome. Let's discuss the real issue."
Everyone looked at him.
He pointed directly at Arjun.
"Our CEO brother left looking like a strict businessman."
He slowly circled Arjun, pretending to inspect him from head to toe.
"But he has returned looking suspiciously happy."
Riya immediately joined in.
"I noticed that too."
She narrowed her eyes.
"He's even smiling voluntarily."
Gasps echoed dramatically around the hall.
"No..."
"What?"
"Impossible!"
The cousins began acting as though they had witnessed a miracle.
Arjun sighed.
"You all have too much free time."
Karan shook his head.
"No, Bhai."
"We've concluded that London didn't change you."
He pointed towards Aadhira.
"Bhabhi did."
Laughter erupted throughout the mansion.
Aadhira lowered her gaze shyly, her cheeks turning a soft shade of pink.
Arjun looked at her, unable to hide the smile tugging at his lips.
That single glance didn't escape the family's notice.
"Oh ho..." someone teased.
"Look at the way he's looking at her."
"Our stone-hearted Arjun is gone."
"He has officially become a devoted husband."
The teasing only grew louder.
For the first time in years...
The grand Rathore Mansion wasn't echoing with business discussions, responsibilities, or formal conversations.
It echoed with laughter.
And standing in the middle of it all...
Aadhira laughed too.
Not because she was trying to fit in.
But because, for the first time in a very long time...
She truly belonged.
"Enough teasing," Dadiji said with a loving smile. "The poor children have just returned after a long journey."
"Exactly!" Riya protested dramatically. "They've returned after a month. We deserve our gifts first."
"Look at her priorities," Karan muttered, earning himself a playful glare.
Arjun sighed in defeat.
"I knew this would happen."
He nodded towards the luggage.
"Everyone's gifts are inside."
That was all it took.
Within seconds, everyone surrounded the luggage like excited children.
"I call the biggest box!"
"No cheating!"
"That's mine!"
"I saw it first!"
Aadhira couldn't help but laugh as she watched the chaos unfold.
London had given her beautiful memories.
But this...
This noisy, imperfect, loving madness...
Felt like family.
One by one, Arjun and Aadhira handed out the gifts they had carefully selected during their trip.
There were perfumes, watches, scarves, chocolates, souvenirs, books, handmade décor, and little keepsakes that reminded them of each family member.
Every gift had been chosen with thought.
Every smile made the effort worthwhile.
"You remembered this?" someone asked in surprise.
Aadhira smiled.
"Of course."
"I didn't buy gifts."
"I bought memories."
For a brief moment, silence filled the room.
Then Dadiji gently cupped Aadhira's face.
"You always think about others before yourself."
Aadhira simply smiled.
She didn't know how to answer that.
Because somewhere deep inside...
She had spent years wishing someone would remember her.
Maybe that was why she never forgot anyone else.
After dinner, the family gathered in the living room over tea, continuing to share stories from London.
Karan leaned forward with an amused grin.
"So, Bhai..."
"Tell us honestly."
"Did you actually see London..."
"...or were you busy staring at Bhabhi the whole time?"
Everyone burst into laughter.
Arjun looked completely unfazed.
"I saw London."
He paused deliberately before adding,
"But your Bhabhi looked better."
The room fell silent.
Everyone stared at him.
Karan slowly placed a hand over his heart.
"I don't know this man."
"Our emotionally unavailable brother has disappeared."
Riya dramatically wiped away an imaginary tear.
"I'm so proud."
Aadhira hid her face behind her dupatta, completely embarrassed.
She quietly nudged Arjun with her elbow.
"Everyone is watching."
Without missing a beat, he whispered back,
"I know."
"That's why I said it."
Her cheeks turned crimson.
The teasing continued for several more minutes until Dadiji finally rescued the blushing couple.
"Bas, bas..."
"Let them breathe."
As the laughter slowly settled, Aadhira's eyes wandered around the room.
Everyone was talking.
Everyone...
Except one little boy.
Vivaan sat quietly near the window, absentmindedly playing with food.
Unlike the others, he wasn't asking for gifts or joining the conversation.
He simply watched everyone with a soft smile.
Aadhira noticed him immediately.
Without drawing attention to herself, she walked over and sat beside him.
"What are you thinking about?"
Vivaan looked up, slightly surprised.
"Nothing..."
His answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
Aadhira smiled knowingly.
She had once hidden behind the exact same answer.
As Vivaan shifted in his seat, she noticed a small scrape across his hand.
The skin had peeled slightly.
It wasn't serious.
But it hadn't been cleaned.
"How did this happen?" she asked gently.
Vivaan looked at his hand.
"I fell while playing cricket yesterday."
"And you didn't tell anyone?"
He shrugged.
"It's just a scratch."
Aadhira quietly took out a clean handkerchief from her purse.
She poured a little water from the bottle beside her onto it and carefully cleaned the wound.
Vivaan flinched.
"It stings."
"I know," she said softly.
"It'll only sting for a moment."
After cleaning it, she gently blew on the scrape just like a mother comforting her child.
"There..."
"Better?"
Vivaan looked at his hand.
Then at her.
He gave a tiny nod.
"Thank you..."
Aadhira smiled and lovingly ruffled his hair.
"You're welcome."
She stood up to return to the others.
Just as she took a step...
She felt someone gently hold the edge of her saree.
She turned around.
Vivaan immediately let go, looking embarrassed.
He lowered his eyes.
"...Good night, Bhabhi."
Aadhira's heart softened.
She smiled warmly.
"Good night, Vivaan."
Neither of them noticed the silent smiles exchanged by the elders across the room.
Sometimes...
The smallest moments created the strongest bonds.
As the clock struck eleven, the Rathore Mansion gradually fell into silence.
One by one, the lights in the hall went out.
Doors closed.
Conversations faded.
Only the soft chirping of crickets and the cool night breeze remained.
Aadhira stepped onto the balcony of their room, letting the fresh air brush against her face.
The moon hung high in the sky, bathing the gardens below in silver light.
For the first time in years...
Her heart felt... peaceful.
She closed her eyes.
A pair of familiar arms slowly wrapped around her waist from behind.
She smiled even before he spoke.
"I knew I'd find you here."
Arjun rested his chin lightly on her shoulder.
"Tired?"
"A little."
"And happy?"
She nodded.
"Very."
For a few moments, neither of them spoke.
Silence had never felt this comfortable.
"It feels strange," Aadhira whispered.
"What does?"
"Being happy without worrying about what tomorrow will bring."
Arjun gently turned her around until she was facing him.
"There will always be problems."
"There will always be people who try to pull us down."
"But this time..."
He tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
"You won't face any of it alone."
Her eyes softened.
"You know..."
"I used to believe that if I loved someone..."
"I would lose them."
Arjun held both her hands.
"And now?"
A small smile appeared on her lips.
"Now I know..."
"Love doesn't always take people away."
"Sometimes..."
"It brings you home."
Without saying another word, Arjun kissed her forehead.
Then her cheeks.
Finally...
He rested his forehead against hers.
"I have a promise to make."
Aadhira looked at him curiously.
"No matter what happens..."
"No matter who stands against us..."
"I'll stand beside you."
"Not in front of you."
"Not behind you."
"Beside you."
A lone tear escaped Aadhira's eye.
Not from pain.
But from relief.
She smiled through her tears.
"And I promise..."
"No matter how difficult life becomes..."
"I'll never stop choosing you."
Arjun chuckled softly.
"Good."
"Because I have no intention of letting you go."
She laughed before lightly punching his shoulder.
"You've become very cheesy after London."
"I learned from the best."
"The best?"
"My wife."
She rolled her eyes.
"Hopeless."
"Madly."
"In love with you."
Aadhira hid her face against his chest as his laughter echoed softly through the quiet night.
Far away...
Someone else watched the same moon.
······
A dimly lit warehouse stood on the outskirts of the city.
The only sound inside was the ticking of an old wall clock.
A man entered, carrying a thick brown file.
Without a word, he placed it on the steel table.
Another figure stood near the window, hidden completely in darkness.
Only the outline of broad shoulders was visible.
The file opened.
Photographs spilled across the table.
Kavya.
Her father.
Business documents.
Property records.
Bank transactions.
Phone logs.
Each page had been carefully arranged.
The shadowed figure slowly picked up one photograph.
Kavya.
A cold silence filled the room.
"Report."
The voice was calm.
Cold.
Controlled.
"They've started moving money again."
"The shell companies?"
"Three confirmed."
"The fourth is still under surveillance."
The figure placed Kavya's photograph back onto the table.
"And her father?"
"He believes no one suspects him."
A faint chuckle escaped the second person.
"Good."
"Let him keep believing that."
The first man slid another photograph forward.
It was Aadhira.
Smiling.
Standing beside Arjun as they entered the Rathore Mansion earlier that evening.
The room fell silent.
Unlike the other photographs...
This one wasn't pushed aside.
A gloved hand carefully lifted it.
For a long moment...
Neither of them spoke.
Finally, the shadowed figure broke the silence.
"She's home."
A softness entered the voice for the briefest second before disappearing.
"The countdown begins now."
"What about Kavya?"
The answer came without hesitation.
"Don't touch her."
"Not yet."
"Let her believe she's won."
The second figure closed the file.
"When the truth comes out..."
"It won't just destroy her."
"It will bury every lie she and her father built over the last seven years."
The warehouse lights switched off.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Only one photograph remained in the faint moonlight.
Aadhira Devraj.
A gloved hand carefully picked it up...
...and placed it inside a separate black folder.
The folder closed.
Outside, thunder rumbled across the night sky.
The storm...
Had already begun.
To be continued.....
