Chapter 52 - Behind Closed Doors
The next evening, the Rathore mansion was unusually lively.
The entire family had gathered in the living room, preparing to leave.
Rajveer adjusted his watch before looking toward everyone.
"Are we all ready?"
"Almost," Riya replied, checking her phone. "Karan is still upstairs."
"I told him five minutes ago," Vikram said with a sigh.
From the staircase came Karan's voice.
"I'm coming!"
He appeared a moment later, fixing his jacket as he walked down.
Riya rolled her eyes.
"Finally."
Karan grinned.
"Relax. We're not going to miss a flight."
"It's a family visit, not a vacation," Nandhini reminded him.
"Even better."
A few family members laughed.
Aadhira stood slightly away from them, dressed simply and elegantly.
She hadn't said much since hearing where they were going.
Devraj Mansion.
She had no desire to return there.
Not because she was afraid.
Not because she was nervous.
She simply didn't want to.
There were too many memories attached to that place.
Memories from before she was seventeen.
Memories from the day everything changed.
Arjun noticed her silence.
He walked toward her.
"Aadhira."
She looked at him.
"Yes?"
"Are you okay with going?"
She understood immediately what he meant.
"You don't have to come just because everyone else is going," he continued quietly. "If you don't want to see them, you don't have to."
Aadhira looked toward the family.
They were all busy talking among themselves.
She remained silent for a moment.
Then she looked back at him.
"It's fine."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
Her voice was calm.
"I don't mind them."
Arjun studied her face.
He knew that answer wasn't exactly the same as saying she wanted to go.
But he also knew better than to push.
"If you feel uncomfortable at any point, tell me."
A faint smile touched her lips.
"I will."
Arjun nodded.
"Good."
He gently took her hand.
"Then let's go."
---
DEVRAJ MANSION
The moment the Rathore family arrived, the atmosphere inside the Devraj mansion became warm and welcoming.
Harshvardhan Devraj walked forward with a broad smile.
"Rajveer!"
Rajveer laughed as he embraced his old friend.
"It's been too long."
"Far too long."
Devayani came forward next and warmly greeted Savitri.
The two elderly women immediately began talking.
"You look exactly the same," Savitri said.
Devayani laughed.
"You're lying."
"Of course I am."
Both women laughed.
Behind them, the younger members greeted one another.
Mahendra and Arvind began discussing an upcoming business project.
Vikram and Radeev joined them.
"It seems the Mumbai expansion is finally moving forward," Radeev said.
"Yes," Vikram replied. "We should have the final numbers by next week."
Aditya and Vihaan exchanged greetings while Aarav and Atharv joined the conversation.
Meanwhile, Riya and Karan were already talking with Advik.
Vivaan stood beside Ayaan, quietly observing everyone.
The atmosphere was familiar.
Almost like an extended family gathering.
Then Devayani's eyes moved toward Aadhira.
Her smile softened.
"Aadhira..."
Aadhira looked at her.
"Hello, Dadi."
The simple greeting made Devayani's eyes slightly moist.
"How are you, child?"
"I'm fine."
"You're looking beautiful."
"Thank you."
Aadhira gave her a polite smile.
Nothing more.
Meera stood nearby.
She watched her daughter carefully.
There were so many things she wanted to say.
So many things she had rehearsed in her mind over the years.
But when Aadhira actually stood in front of her...
She couldn't find the words.
"Aadhira..."
Aadhira turned toward her mother.
"Yes?"
Meera hesitated.
"Nothing."
Aadhira simply nodded.
Rajesh noticed the exchange.
His expression tightened with quiet regret.
Before he could say anything, Savitri placed a hand gently on Devayani's arm.
"Come, let's sit."
Everyone moved toward the living room.
Aadhira followed Arjun.
She sat beside him.
Throughout the conversation, she remained polite.
When someone asked her a question, she answered.
When someone spoke to her, she listened.
But she didn't initiate anything.
She didn't ask about the family.
She didn't discuss the past.
She didn't try to rebuild relationships that had already been broken.
Arjun noticed.
So did several members of the Devraj family.
Nitya occasionally looked at Aadhira with quiet sympathy.
Meher tried once to involve her in a conversation about London.
"How is your life going?"
Aadhira looked at her.
"Busy."
Meher smiled gently.
The answer was neither warm nor cold.
Just honest.
Meher nodded.
"I understand."
Aadhira gave her a small smile.
Then the conversation moved elsewhere.
---
The sound of the front door opening drew everyone's attention.
Vedha walked inside.
She had just returned from a business meeting.
Her heels clicked against the marble floor as she entered, speaking to someone on her phone.
"Send the revised designs to my office tonight. I'll review them tomorrow."
She ended the call.
Then looked up.
Her eyes immediately landed on Aadhira.
She stopped.
For a brief moment, surprise crossed her face.
Aadhira was sitting .
Calm.
Unbothered.
Vedha's expression hardened.
Then she noticed the rest of the Rathore family.
"You're here."
Arjun nodded.
"Yes."
Vedha greeted the elders politely.
Then her eyes returned to Aadhira.
Neither woman said anything.
Kavya entered behind Vedha.
She smiled when she saw the gathering.
"Everyone is here."
She greeted the families before taking a seat beside Vedha.
Her eyes briefly moved toward Aadhira.
Aadhira didn't even look at her.
Kavya smiled faintly.
Interesting.
---
Dinner was served later.
The conversation remained mostly light.
Rajveer and Harshvardhan reminisced about their younger days.
Savitri and Devayani discussed family matters.
The younger members joked among themselves.
Karan teased Riya.
Ayaan quietly listened.
Vivaan laughed at something Aditya said.
For a while, it almost felt like two families celebrating together.
But beneath the warmth...
Some wounds remained untouched.
Aadhira quietly left the dining room after dinner.
She needed air.
---
THE GARDEN
The Devraj garden was peaceful at night.
Soft lights illuminated the pathways.
Aadhira stood near the fountain, looking at the flowers.
She heard footsteps behind her.
She didn't turn around.
She already knew who it was.
Vedha stopped a few feet away.
"You really seem comfortable here."
Aadhira remained silent.
Vedha walked closer.
"Coming back and sitting here like nothing happened."
Aadhira looked at her.
"Did you need something?"
Vedha scoffed.
"You always were good at pretending."
Aadhira said nothing.
Vedha's expression hardened.
"You know, sometimes I wonder if you realize how lucky you are."
Aadhira raised an eyebrow slightly.
"Lucky?"
"Yes."
Vedha crossed her arms.
"You should be grateful to me."
Aadhira remained quiet.
"If I hadn't rejected Arjun..."
Vedha smiled bitterly.
"You wouldn't have become his wife."
Aadhira looked at her for a moment.
Then simply looked away.
That reaction irritated Vedha.
"That's all?"
Aadhira said nothing.
Vedha stepped closer.
"You don't even have the decency to acknowledge what I did for you?"
Aadhira finally looked at her.
"I didn't ask you to do anything for me."
Vedha's eyes narrowed.
"You always speak as though you're above everyone."
"No."
Aadhira's voice remained calm.
"I simply don't have anything to say."
Vedha laughed bitterly.
"Of course."
She looked Aadhira up and down.
"You know what still amazes me?"
Aadhira waited.
"After everything that happened, someone actually married you."
Silence.
Vedha continued.
"Honestly, you should be grateful."
Aadhira's expression didn't change.
"Not everyone would want to marry someone with your past."
Still nothing.
Vedha's frustration grew.
"You were sent away for a reason."
Aadhira looked at her.
"And yet I'm still standing here."
Vedha's jaw tightened.
"You think marrying Arjun makes you important?"
"No."
"Then why do you act like none of this affects you?"
Aadhira's gaze remained steady.
"Because it doesn't."
The answer came so simply that Vedha was momentarily speechless.
Aadhira turned away.
"I think we're done."
Vedha stared at her.
"You're unbelievable."
Aadhira didn't respond.
She simply walked away.
Vedha watched her leave.
Her hands curled into fists.
"Aadhira!"
Aadhira didn't turn around.
That was what finally broke Vedha's patience.
She threw her phone onto the nearby bench.
"Damn it!"
Her breathing became heavy.
She stood there for several seconds, furious.
Unbeknownst to her...
Someone else had witnessed everything.
Kavya stood several feet away.
She had seen the entire exchange.
A slow smile appeared on her lips.
She had always known Vedha hated Aadhira.
But seeing it firsthand...
It was useful.
Very useful.
---
Aadhira walked toward the far end of the garden.
Her phone vibrated.
She stopped.
Unknown Number.
She opened the message.
Someone is being restless.
Her eyes remained on the screen for a moment.
Then she typed a short reply.
Let them be.
She sent it.
Locked her phone.
And continued walking.
No fear.
No panic.
Nothing in her expression suggested that the message had surprised her.
---
"Aadhira."
She turned.
Arjun was walking toward her.
"There you are."
She smiled faintly.
"Looking for me?"
"Yes."
He stopped beside her.
"It's getting late."
Aadhira glanced toward the mansion.
"Everyone is ready?"
"Almost."
He looked at her carefully.
"You okay?"
"I'm fine."
Arjun held out his hand.
"Then come."
She placed her hand in his.
They walked back together.
---
A few minutes later, the Rathore family gathered near the entrance.
The Devrajs came out to see them off.
"Come again soon," Harshvardhan told Rajveer.
"Of course."
Devayani hugged Savitri before saying goodbye.
"Next time, we'll spend more time together."
"We will."
The younger members exchanged smiles and farewells.
Riya hugged Kavita.
Karan shook Advik's hand.
Aditya and Vihaan discussed meeting again for business.
Arjun politely greeted everyone.
Aadhira stood beside him.
Meera looked at her daughter.
For a second, she wanted to reach out.
But she stopped herself.
Aadhira simply said,
"Goodbye."
Meera smiled sadly.
"Goodbye, Aadhira."
Aadhira turned away.
Arjun placed a hand gently against her back as they walked toward the car.
She didn't look back.
The car doors closed.
The Rathore family left the Devraj mansion.
And as the lights of their cars disappeared down the road...
Kavya stood silently near the entrance.
Her eyes remained fixed on the direction Aadhira had gone.
A faint smile touched her lips.
She had thought Aadhira's greatest strength was Arjun.
She was beginning to realize...
There were far more secrets surrounding that woman than she had imagined.
And secrets...
Could always be used.
Or so Kavya believed.
Because she still didn't know the truth.
The war she had decided to begin...
Had already been anticipated by the person she intended to destroy.
To be continued...
