Chapter 57 - The Truth Behind the Mask

The car finally came to a stop outside the house.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The silence inside the car felt strangely heavy after everything that had happened at the warehouse.

Aadhira sat in the passenger seat, staring through the windshield. There was still a faint trace of blood on her sleeve, though most of it had dried by now. Naina was sitting in the back seat, unusually quiet for once.

Arjun turned off the engine and glanced at them both.

"We're home."

Naina immediately unbuckled her seat belt.

"Thank God. If I had to spend another minute in that warehouse, I would've started charging Vikrant rent for keeping me there."

Aadhira couldn't help smiling.

"You were kidnapped."

"I know."

"You were held hostage."

"I know that too."

"And you're worried about rent?"

Naina opened the door.

"The food was terrible. Someone had to suffer financially for that."

Aadhira shook her head as she stepped out of the car.

Arjun watched them for a moment before following.

The moment they reached the entrance, Kabir came rushing toward Naina.

"Naina!"

Naina barely had time to react before Kabir pulled her into a tight hug.

"Okay, okay," she said, laughing slightly. "I'm alive."

Kabir pulled back and looked at her from head to toe.

"Are you hurt?"

"Nothing serious."

"You're sure?"

"Yes."

Dev came over and placed a hand on Kabir's shoulder, trying to calm him down.

"She just got back. Give her some space."

Kabir frowned.

"Easy for you to say. You weren't the one waiting for her to come back."

Naina raised an eyebrow.

"Were you crying?"

Kabir immediately looked offended.

"I don't cry."

Dev gave him a look.

Kabir cleared his throat.

"Fine. Maybe a little."

Naina smiled and hugged him again.

"I'm okay."

A few steps away, Rohan had been standing completely still.

Naina noticed him.

"Rohan?"

He walked toward her without saying anything.

For once, there was no teasing smile on his face.

He stopped in front of her and looked at the faint marks on her wrist.

"Does it hurt?"

Naina glanced down.

"Not really."

"You're lying."

"Maybe a little."

Rohan exhaled sharply.

"You disappeared for hours."

"I was kidnapped. I didn't exactly plan it."

"I know."

His voice was quieter now.

"That doesn't mean I wasn't terrified."

Naina's expression softened.

Before she could say anything, Rohan pulled her into his arms.

She froze for a second.

Then her arms slowly wrapped around him.

"I came back," she whispered.

Rohan held her a little tighter.

"Don't ever make me wait like that again."

Naina smiled against his shoulder.

"I'll try."

"Try?"

She pulled back and grinned.

"No promises."

Rohan stared at her.

She laughed.

"There you are. I was starting to miss the grumpy version of you."

A small smile finally appeared on his face.

Across the room, Aadhira watched them with a faint smile before turning away.

Arjun was already looking at her.

Their eyes met.

His expression was unreadable.

Aadhira's smile disappeared.

She knew that look.

There was something he wanted to say.

And she knew exactly what it was about.

"I'm going upstairs," she said quietly.

Arjun nodded.

"I'll come with you."

Aadhira didn't argue.

They walked upstairs without saying another word.

Once they entered their room, Aadhira placed her phone on the table and slowly removed her earrings.

Arjun closed the door behind them.

Neither spoke.

Aadhira looked at him through the mirror.

"You've been quiet since the warehouse."

Arjun leaned against the closed door.

"I've been thinking."

"About what?"

He looked at her.

"You."

Aadhira turned around.

"What about me?"

Arjun took a few steps toward her.

"What happened tonight."

Aadhira's fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

She had expected this.

"I know what you're thinking."

"Do you?"

"You saw me tonight."

"Yes."

Aadhira looked away.

"You saw what I'm capable of."

Arjun didn't answer.

She continued, her voice quieter.

"Maybe you never imagined that side of me."

"I didn't."

Aadhira swallowed.

"I thought you might hate me for it."

Arjun's expression changed immediately.

"Hate you?"

"You saw people get hurt because of me."

"No."

His answer was firm.

"They got hurt because they chose to hurt you and Naina."

Aadhira looked at him.

"That's not what I mean."

"I know."

He stepped closer.

"You're worried that I'll look at you differently now."

She remained silent.

Arjun stopped in front of her.

"Aadhira, I knew from the beginning that you weren't the innocent, sheltered girl everyone thought you were."

She raised an eyebrow.

"That doesn't sound very romantic."

"It wasn't supposed to."

A tiny smile touched her lips.

Arjun continued.

"I don't love you because you're harmless."

The smile faded.

"I love you because you're you."

Aadhira stared at him.

"You're not afraid of me?"

"I was afraid something would happen to you."

He paused.

"That's different."

Her eyes softened.

Arjun reached for her hand.

"I know you, Aadhira. I know you don't hurt innocent people. I've seen enough of you to know the difference between cruelty and protection."

She looked down at their joined hands.

"You still love me the same?"

Arjun gave a small, almost disbelieving smile.

"Nothing that happened tonight changed that."

Aadhira breathed out slowly.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then she looked up.

"There are still things you don't know."

Arjun's expression became serious again.

"The person from tonight?"

Aadhira froze.

He had seen them.

Of course he had.

She nodded.

"Yes."

Arjun didn't ask another question.

He simply waited.

Aadhira walked toward the balcony doors and opened them.

Cool night air entered the room.

She stood there for several seconds before speaking.

Arjun remained silent.

"We've been there for each other for a long time."

"How long?"

"Long enough."

Aadhira turned toward him.

"What you saw tonight wasn't an accident. The person knew where I was going. Knew what I was walking into. And knew exactly when to arrive."

Arjun's jaw tightened slightly.

"So it was planned."

"Yes."

"By both of you?"

Aadhira nodded.

"There are things we've been doing quietly. Things nobody can know about."

"Not even me?"

"Not until tonight."

Arjun looked away for a moment.

Then he asked quietly, "Why?"

"Because the moment you knew, you became part of the secret."

He looked back at her.

"And now?"

"Now you already saw too much."

Aadhira took a breath.

"So I'm telling you everything."

She began explaining.

Not every detail of her life, not every operation, not every secret surrounding her empire.

But enough.

She told him about the alliance that had existed behind closed doors. About why they not allowed infront everyone . About the reason their meetings, messages, and movements had to remain hidden.

She explained why the person had protected her tonight.

Why the person had been willing to step into danger without hesitation.

And finally, she told Arjun the truth about exactly who had been standing behind that mask.

Arjun didn't interrupt her once.

The more she spoke, the more pieces of the puzzle fell into place.

The strange messages.

The unexplained movements.

The face he had seen in the rear-view mirror.

Everything suddenly had an explanation.

When Aadhira finally stopped speaking, the room remained silent.

Arjun stared at the floor for a few seconds.

"So that's why."

Aadhira nodded.

"You understand now?"

"I understand more than I did an hour ago."

She watched him carefully.

"You're angry."

"A little."

Her shoulders stiffened.

Arjun noticed immediately.

"Not because of what you think."

"Then why?"

"Because you carried all of this alone."

Aadhira looked away.

"I had to."

"You didn't have to carry everything alone anymore."

She looked back at him.

"Arjun-"

"I know you were protecting the plan."

He stepped closer.

"And I understand why you couldn't tell me."

Aadhira's eyes softened.

"But?"

"But I'm still your husband."

She smiled faintly.

"I know."

"So next time you decide to walk into danger, at least let me know you're planning to disappear for half the night."

Aadhira laughed softly.

"You would've stopped me."

"Probably."

"Exactly."

Arjun shook his head.

"You're impossible."

"And yet you married me."

"I did."

He pulled her closer.

"And I'd do it again."

Aadhira rested her forehead against his chest.

For the first time that night, some of the tension left her body.

Arjun held her quietly.

Neither of them needed to say anything else.

He now knew the truth.

The truth behind the mask.

The truth behind the alliance.

And the truth about the person Aadhira had trusted enough to keep beside her for years.

But that secret would stay between them.

At least for now.

Outside their room, the rest of the house had gone quiet.

Inside, Aadhira finally allowed herself to breathe.

And Arjun realized something that made the entire night feel different.

The person he had seen walking away from that warehouse had never been a stranger to Aadhira.

They had been part of the same secret all along.

And now, so was he.

To be continued.....
