Bruno Crane
The Friend
In the small hours of the morning, I hear a strange rustling sound. I’m not asleep, of course. I won’t sleep again so long as I’m still here. I turn on the bedside lamp to see a piece of paper being pushed under my door. I go to pick it up, unfold the little twist of paper and read:
SILENCE IS INDEED GOLDEN
AWAIT INSTRUCTIONS FOR WHERE TO MEET
For the first time since I arrived here, I smile. I’m glad, now, that I didn’t manage to hightail it out of this place. My gamble has paid off.
