Chapter 44

Heather

The drive back to the ranch was a blur of exhaustion and relief. Danny’s hand rested on mine as he navigated the quiet, winding roads of Silver Creek. I watched the landscape roll by, my mind heavy with the weight of everything that had happened. The betrayal, the danger, the loss of Aunt Dina—it all seemed so overwhelming. But with Danny by my side, I felt a spark of hope.

As we pulled up to the ranch, the familiar sight of the house brought a rush of emotions. Danny parked the car, and we both sat there for a moment, neither of us ready to break the silence.

"Come on," Danny said softly, squeezing my hand. "Let's get inside."

We stepped out of the car, and the cool night air hit me. We walked up the steps to the front door,

I kicked off my shoes and headed straight for the bedroom, too tired to even think about anything else. Danny followed, and we collapsed onto the bed, the exhaustion finally catching up with us. I curled up against him, feeling the warmth of his body and the steady beat of his heart.

"We did it," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. "We brought them down."

"Yeah," he murmured, pressing a kiss to my forehead. "We did. Now we just have to rebuild."

Sleep came quickly, and for the first time in what felt like forever, it was peaceful. No nightmares, no fear, just the comforting presence of Danny beside me.

When I woke up, Danny was still asleep, his arm draped over me protectively. I watched him for a moment, feeling a rush of gratitude and love. This man had risked everything to save me, to bring justice to my aunt’s memory.

Carefully, I slipped out of bed, trying not to wake him. I padded barefoot into the kitchen and started a pot of coffee, the familiar routine grounding me. As the coffee brewed, I stared out the window at the ranch. It looked peaceful, almost deceptively so. But I knew there was a lot of work to be done, both physically and emotionally.

Danny joined me a few minutes later, his hair tousled from sleep, a smile on his face. "Morning," he said, wrapping his arms around me from behind.

"Morning," I replied, leaning into his embrace. "Coffee’s almost ready."

"Perfect," he said, kissing the top of my head. "We’ve got a lot to do today."

We drank our coffee in companionable silence. Finally, I took a deep breath and said, "I want to rebuild the ranch. The way Aunt Dina would have wanted it."

Danny looked at me, his eyes filled with understanding. "We’ll do it," he said. "Together."

As we talked, he mentioned something that took me by surprise. "You know, I worked here when I was younger."

I blinked, trying to process what he was saying. "You did?"

"Yeah," he said with a grin. "I was just a kid, helping out with the horses and chores. You probably don’t remember me."

Suddenly, it clicked. The ranch hand I had a crush on when I was a teenager. The one who had disappeared so suddenly. "Oh my God, that was you?"

Danny laughed, the sound warm and genuine. "Yep, that was me. Guess we were destined to find each other again."

And as the stars began to twinkle overhead, I knew that this was just the beginning.
