Adrian
He went out at twenty-two minutes past one, and I felt it from the inside, which is a sentence no officer of this society has been in a position to write for sixty years.
I am going to write several such sentences before morning.
The gate I have kept between this record and its own subject went down tonight with everything else, and I will not pretend to mourn it.
A man who has said his whole sentence aloud before the convened station has nothing left worth encrypting.
So. Plainly, for the first time in four hundred and seventy-nine returns.
I am the station officer of a society whose oldest instruments style it the Perpetual Curacy.
A curacy is a cure of souls. I require this record to hold the whole of that word; the men who chose it were not being ironic, and the society has earned every letter of it since.
The college above me is the Curacy's visible work.
Its actual work lies under the floor of the room I must now describe: a binding, laid down before the oldest course of stone on this ground, around a thing the first instruments call the Tenant and the later ones decline to call anything at all.
The Tenant is fed. The assessment of the feeding is the tithe.
The collection of the tithe is a sitting: a small room, a kettle, a candle, a young person who leaves lighter and vaguer and thanks the officer at the door for a talk that never happened.
Where the taking shows, there is craft to close the seam of it, and the craft is called tidying, and what tidying leaves behind is a family holding a word like breakdown, and a green bicycle nobody comes for.
Nine years I have kept those nouns out of my own returns, in a cipher of folders and intervals. The cipher is spent. The station watched me spend it.
Thomas Mercer is a latent of the fourth level.
There: that sentence also. Unregistered, unschooled, unfound.
It is a category I have met twice in twenty-six years, and both of those men were filed from boyhood, and neither ever walked a quad laughing with the whole of himself unmetered.
Tonight a working I did not convene opened him on the slab of my own undercroft as fuel, and struck a term of pressure no instrument on this ground was built to read, and the working detonated, and the floor cracked along the figure a century of hands has worn into it, and the Tenant came up to the crack and fed.
Every remedy failed in the order doctrine lists remedies.
Then I performed the act doctrine forbids in its first chapter, ahead of its chapters on murder.
I bound him.
A binding, since I am now permitted definitions: one soul lashed to another, by a laid palm, eleven words, and the whole of what the binder keeps.
It is forbidden, and the reason is not scripture but bookkeeping.
A bound pair generates what no instrument meters, and what cannot be metered cannot be tithed.
Doctrine calls a binding theft from the Tenant in perpetuity.
I stood before the convened station of Ashgrave, such of it as remained on its feet, and embezzled the two of us out of the schedule forever.
What it spent, I want exact, because I will never again be a man who can measure it.
A binding is built from the binder's keeping.
Not his affection; his order. The vault.
The thing I have spent a lifetime becoming instead of a person.
I put my palm on his sternum, over the open drain of him, and I poured the vault through my arm until the pouring held.
Somewhere in the fourth or fifth second, the part of me that has balanced this station's books since before that man was a graduate student went across and did not come back.
It is not gone. It is relocated. It sits behind his sternum now, holding a door, and it reports to me the way a distant estate reports: fully, faithfully, and from another country.
The eleven words are my own. The working takes any words it is given, provided they are meant past retrieval; the choosing is the officer's. I will not enter mine here. Some sentences, once written, are true in every room afterward. Mine are true in one room, and I intend to keep them there.

For the ruling that is coming, I should enter how I came to stand inside a convened working I had not convened.
I followed a candle I had not lit. Thirty-one steps down, past the mask rail at the stair foot, where a station's worth of smooth ovals hangs on pegs like the vestments of a parish.
I took one. The reason goes on the page: an unmasked man on that floor is removed before he reaches the light, and I needed to reach the light.
The working was already at chant. I went around the outside of the figure to the dark edge of the candlelight and demanded cessation, as station officer, in form, with the citations, and a paper was held up to me by a gloved hand in answer.
The paper wore a stamp I have now seen three times in my life.
The two prior papers were obeyed. The working was lawful.
My station had been convened around its own officer, on instruction from above him, and every mask on that floor knew the law better than I could recite it.
I stood in my own undercroft wearing a borrowed face, outranked by stationery.
Then the working struck what nobody had metered for, and the rest is entered above.
The tape came off first. Before the triage, before anything, while the candles were still finding their yellow again: I cut him free of the slab, wrists, ankles, mouth, and I have burned the roll it came from, which repaired nothing and which I would do again.
At a quarter to two, the undercroft held the following.
One unconscious latent, freed, breathing.
One officer kneeling over him with blood at both nostrils and half a soul.
Two officers down, of the six who had stood closest. Some number fled up the stair, in an order I did not see and will not guess at.
Forty candles burning low, having spent their blue.
A crack in the floor, closed now to a seam.
I did the triage, because triage belongs to the officer, whatever else the night redistributed.
The first man had been thrown into the western pillar.
The collarbone had gone at the ligament; there will be a concussion behind it; his mask had split down its blank middle, and I removed it before I let myself know the face, and I will not enter the face.
I strapped the arm to his chest with my own coat lining and set him against the pillar that broke him, and he thanked me.
The second officer was worse, because nothing about him was broken.
He sat where the recoil had set him down: upright, attentive, hands folded in his lap, left over right.
When I asked him where he was hurt, he considered the question and said he was very well, and thanked me, twice, the second time as though the first had never occurred.
The working had recoiled through him on its way to nowhere.
I have administered lightness for twenty-six years, in rationed grams, under the third rubric.
Tonight is the first time I have stood in front of an officer of the Curacy wearing the product.
One more observation from the triage, entered without comment. His hands. He had folded them himself. Nobody did it for him. It is, apparently, what we do when the rest has gone: we tidy.
The seam I did not touch with any instrument.
It was warm. Stone at the bottom of a hill of stone, in November air, warm the way a plate is warm when the meal is done.
The attention that has stood under this college throughout my tenure was not standing anywhere tonight.
It was lying down. I put my palm flat on the floor beside the seam, because an officer verifies, and I took the palm back faster than I have ever moved my own hand. There is no field on any form for: fed.

The inspector came down at three.
I heard her shoes take the thirty-first step and the thirtieth at the pace the job required and no faster, and Neave came behind her, and I stayed on my knees at the slab and did not arrange the room.
She could have it as it stood: the wax, the cut tape, the split mask, the officer smiling at the middle distance over his tidy hands.
She stopped at the foot of the stair and read the room the way she read the hall at dinner in September, as stock, and when she had finished she said, "I was sent here about one irregularity, Headmaster.
I count eleven from where I stand, and I have not yet turned around. "
The instrument case stood open on a trestle at the dark edge of the candlelight, level on its brass feet.
It had been below since Wednesday. That is where my good news went, the afternoon I declined to audit it: the case that sat over my college all term was carried down ahead of the harvest, to take the measure of what the working lifted out of him.
The office does not merely take. It weighs.
Every needle behind the glass stood hard against the far end of its travel. One had gone past the end, and stayed.
"Two of yours will go up that stair on other men's shoulders," Wren said.
"A floor has cracked that held for nine centuries.
And there is a bound pair in my inspection, which is a thing I have read of in the older instruments and never once shared a room with.
My mandate contains one sentence, Headmaster. You know the sentence."
"I know the sentence."
"Then you know what tonight is, if I write it plainly."
"An irregularity." The word did not cover it. We both stood there while it failed to.
