20. Adrian #2

The sentences she read first were the checkable ones, and I will report them rather than copy them, because the matter was never their wording; it was watching her choose them.

An unauthorized working, convened at the station under instrument of the office; the stamp verified, the die real, and her report will say so, because she does not write the checkable falsely.

The working failed against an unregistered latent of the fourth level, with consequential damage to plant and personnel.

Plant, she said. The floor of the oldest room in the county, cracked along its working figure, entered as plant.

I have spoken that dialect since I was twenty-two; it was strange only to hear it wrapped around him.

Last, the officer, acting in extremity, performing a binding before witnesses to preserve the latent's life.

She set the draft down. "Now. There is a version of the next sentence that closes your station, and you know its wording as well as I do.

One more irregularity. The word was mine to define, and a detonation, a feeding, and a forbidden act before the convened station define it from any distance.

If I write the mandate plainly, the college is made tidy by Candlemas, the Curacy's February council, and the file marked closed, and my work here done. "

"And you have not written it plainly."

"I have written this." She took up the draft again, and read at the pace of a woman laying stones. "A bound pair is an asset no station has held in sixty years. The office will want it studied, not spent."

Studied. I have a career's worth of that dialect, and I know what the office keeps inside the word, the way a case keeps an instrument.

A thing studied is a thing on a bench. Benches are fitted with clamps.

Somewhere above the county, on the strength of that sentence, men who speak no first person will begin designing the apparatus of their attention, and the design will be called study for exactly as long as study is the cheaper word.

She watched me hear all of it, and she did not soften one clause, and I record my exact reply.

"That sentence buys weeks. It does not buy an outcome."

"It buys weeks," she agreed. "I have been buying weeks with sentences for twenty years, Headmaster. It is the only currency I have ever been issued. Spend them like a poor man."

I asked her the question I had no standing to ask: what the case had measured on Thursday, before the trestle, while the working ran. She considered the length of the table for a moment, and then gave me one fact, in the tone of a woman deciding a coin toss she had rigged herself.

"The needle did not return to its rest," she said.

"It has a new rest. Neave has recalibrated twice, and the needle prefers its opinion.

The reading itself went up with my covering note, and the office will make of it what the office makes of everything.

" She began to square her papers. "That reading is why studied will hold, for a time.

Nothing in sixty years has bent that instrument.

The office does not spend what it cannot yet price. "

We were nearly done when she gave me the door. I enter it because I closed it, and the record should watch me close it.

"Late entries," she said, not looking up from the squaring, "are expensive, Headmaster.

My report fixes the station's history in the office's mind, and history, once fixed, is checked against every future fact.

If the station's books contain anything bearing on the asset — anything at all, from any week of this term — the hour to enter it is now, over my signature, at my cost. After Friday, it is over yours. "

She knows. Or she suspects, which in her profession is the same organ working at lower light.

A ring against china is a small thing, but she sat across a tea table from me for nine weeks, and nothing about her has ever once been small.

I looked at the offer, and it was real: her signature over my October, her cost, the concealment converted to a disclosure while disclosure could still be survived.

"The books are as I have returned them," I said.

"Yes," she said, and squared the last page. "They generally are."

At the door she paused, case-hand empty, her assistant already a gray shape on the stair. "The rite is not far out now, Headmaster. My diary still closes with it. I would counsel that the pair be seen there, and seen ordinary."

The determination on my remonstrance, for the record, will not now come.

A clerk's line arrived with Wednesday's post: the matter is stayed, the station's assessment being under review in another cause.

Form Nine, the first refusing word of my career, with her name under mine, filed alive into a drawer somewhere and left breathing.

The doubled tithe is neither withdrawn nor enforced.

The interval is neither consulted nor denied.

Everything about this station is stayed, pending the study of us, and I understand the shape of the purchase now, entirely, and I will write it in one sentence because it deserves no more room than it leaves us.

We are safe precisely as long as we are stock.

On Wednesday evening I walked the fabric in the ordinary way, because the fabric does not care what the office stays.

The east range seam is quiet. The stair behind the plant door is quiet.

The seam in the undercroft floor is warm yet, less than it was, a plate cooling on a long table, and the attention beneath it did not rise to meet my palm at the stair head.

It is the first November in nine years the college's dark has been fed full, and I am one half of the meal's replacement, and the quiet under my feet felt of waiting rooms.

At the Lodge I sat down with the tithe columns, because a man prices what he has bought or he has not bought it; he has been billed.

The arithmetic stands thus: the interval, before Thursday, bottomed in the last week of term.

The feeding has moved the floor of the column.

How far, no instrument of mine can say; the case knows, and the case's paper has gone up the county; and when the office has priced the difference between what a harvest takes and what a pair gave, it will not send the answer to me. I am the answer's shelf.

I worked the columns past midnight, pencil, no lamp but the fire. The room's cold came down in courses and settled at the ankles. Her sentence sat at my elbow where I had copied it, in my own hand now: studied, not spent. Two words holding the roof of this term, and the wrong one bearing.

Across forty-one yards the wire carried the shape of him sleeping. Deep, unguarded, the sleep of a man whose questions have at last been answered by somebody. One of us should have it. I stayed with the columns and let his side of the wire keep the watch it does not know it keeps.

I do not remember closing my eyes.

I woke in the chair at five with the fire gray, and there was a list under my tongue before there was a morning.

Items, numbered, in the first person of another man.

Forty-one yards, both directions. The ache is rent.

Rent implies a landlord, and I don't know which of us it is.

The grammar contracted; the list had lost its numbers in transit and kept its thumbs.

His sleep had crossed the wire with its filing system on, and mine, I did not doubt, had gone the other way with the columns.

The wall between our sleep bears in neither direction.

I entered the discovery in the second set of books, dated, timed.

I did not enter the finding that has no field on any form: twenty-six years I have woken to inventory, and on Thursday I woke to company.
