23. Thomas #2
"You noted it." The room was doing the thing where it goes small. "He's twenty-six. He sits in a day room upstate with his hands folded by a stranger, and his mother sets her watch by the last piece of him, and you noted it."
"The college is older than your feelings, Dr. Mercer."
Dr. Mercer. I'd been Thomas since the record room in November. The surname was him filing me back, and he did it without raising his voice, gently, terribly, a librarian re-shelving a book that had wandered. The surname went down my collar like cold water.
"And me," I said. "October. Your careful questions of old friends."
"I asked them. I told you I would; you may notice I have never once lied to you.
You will check that when you leave here, because you are thorough, which is the first thing I reported about you.
" He set the pencil down parallel to the table's edge, the only movement in him.
"What the office builds from an answer is the office's business.
I file. I have never attended. I have never seen the room you woke in, and I did not choose it for you, and I would not have.
A flag is a minute, Thomas. I have written minutes for thirty years. "
"Minutes." I could hear my own blood. "Your minutes have a body count."
"My minutes have a college standing on top of them.
" He said it without heat, with the settled patience he uses on undergraduates who think they've found an error in the catalogue.
"You have been here one term. I have been at that desk thirty-four years, and I have done this place its small services for thirty of them.
Doors held. Names misremembered on request. A word put in the right post, a page made tidy.
You are looking for masks and cellars. It is mostly rotas.
Chapel flowers. The kitchen calendar. Who signs for the coal and who countersigns for candles.
Eleven hundred living souls upstairs and one old debt below, and the ledger between them has balanced for two centuries because unremarkable men carry the pennies across. "
"And the ones the pennies are made of?"
"Are fewer than the fire would be." His eyes behind the half-glasses were steady and sad and unmoved: faith, decades deep, the real thing.
"I saw the alternative once, when I was younger than you.
I decline to see it again. That is my entire politics, and you may report it to anyone you like, because it is also the office's. "
"You knew what they'd do with my name."
"I knew better than you what they would do with your ignorance.
" He leaned forward then, first time, and the terrible part is that even now it read as concern.
"You are registered, Thomas. I may finally speak to you almost plainly, and I will tell you it is a relief; I have not enjoyed the pretending.
You are safer today, bound, on a schedule, than you were in September, glowing on every stair of my college with your questions and your notebook.
Unfound things get found badly. I minuted you toward being found well. "
"Found well." The photograph was in my inside pocket, against my chest, where it lives, and my heart was hitting it like a fist on a door. "You want to see how being found goes? I carry the picture."
"I have seen the picture," Ballard said quietly. "I filed the picture."
The air went out of me the way it goes when you sit down harder than you meant to. Steam kept rising off the coffee between us, and my thumbnail found the seam of the table and pressed until it went white.
The kettle finished, click, into the silence.
I stood up. There's a version of me from September who would have had eleven things to say, nine of them funny, and I reached the place where that man keeps his mouth and found the grille down and the shop dark.
It's been dark since a diner in Denbridge.
I picked up his cream card and put it back in my notebook, in a different pocket, the one where I keep evidence.
"The card was truthfully meant," he said, as I reached the door. "Every kindness was. That is the part you will mind the most, in a year."
I left the coffee where it steamed.

Here's the thing I did instead of falling apart: I asked the next question.
He had found his way into accounts that are not for reading.
Micah's flag says access unsupervised. Access to what?
Ballard had answered it himself, months ago, warm, over the same kettle: the works ledgers. The old fabric accounts.
The catalogue in the library holds a card for them, series and dates, and across the card in a clerk's hand from before my parents were born: Transferred to the Registry.
Of course. The paper trail ends at his counter, the way the ledger page ended in a razored stub, the way everything on this ground ends one desk away from the man who files.
I stood at the catalogue drawer at four in the afternoon, out of road.
