Chapter Twenty-Two We Bleed, We Burn, We Rise #5

She didn't have to wonder any longer when they struck—thankfully with their swords.

Adan blocked the steel with her right hand, blood spurted from her palm, and she dodged the oncoming sword to her left.

She kicked hard at the male who left his chest open while she held his sword in her bare hand, and he instantly flew back.

Adan flipped his sword, catching it by the pommel.

Her blood smearing the handle, making it harder to grasp.

She lunged at the remaining male. He couldn't move as quickly as her, not in the small space, not in his minuscule armour.

His arm extended, sword in hand, she turned just missing his blade.

She slashed at his over extended hand, knocking his weapon free.

Facing him, sword in her bloody hand, and her blade in the other.

Adan knew he would go for his power now that he was weaponless.

She pounced before he might actually become a problem.

Kicking his leg just below his knee where she knew he would crumble.

He shrieked, and she brought down the blade on his neck, silencing the sound.

Blood splattered and flowed at her feet, along with his head.

She walked over his body while his comrade was slowly getting up. Crawling backwards on his hands and knees at the sight of the butcher.

"You're making this far to easy." She tossed her blade in the air and watched as it flipped, while she stalked towards him. The bloody sword dragging behind her. It was a little to heavy for her taste, but she wouldn't be taking it with her when she was done here.

He turned to look back at the open end of the ally, and it cost him.

Adan tossed her blade in perfect form. It landed directly in the nape of the male's neck, and he dropped like a sack of potatoes. Adan sighed as she went to retrieve her knife. At that moment, she missed the fights with Nox, how he could actually give her a fight.

This felt, sad—pathetic in comparison. These were supposed to be some of the king's best men. Charged with the protection of the king and city. She placed her foot on the dead man's head as she yanked her blade free. The wound was gruesome, and she could clearly see where she had severed his spine.

A groan from the remaining guard had her head whipping back. She stalked towards him like a master of death. He had a massive head wound, but it was healing. She crouched down in front of him and placed her blade under his chin. He was smart to look scared, but did not move.

"Tell your king, that this is only the beginning." She rose and turning to give him her back. She didn't care anymore if Cias found out who she was, she was done hiding.

He struck then, with his power. It was a poor, pitiful imitation of Darius's wind. It tickled up Adan's back, but fuelled her rage. She did not know or care if the male knew of the stories of the assassin that was whipped into obedience by the king's son.

She slowly turned to him, fire already burning in her palms. She dropped the sword, it was already melting, but not her dagger. That she had specifically made for herself, as fire flicked down the blade and ignited the steel in pure wrath.

Darkness swept over her vision as she plunged her burning dagger into the male's heart. He would have cried out had his body not burned up almost instantly to nothing but ash. His lingering wind seemed to carry away what remained of him, mingling with the sandy ground.

"Fuck." She had planned on him to send a message.

She knew she had acted rashly in that moment--but didn't care.

The emulsion of that guard was not part of the plan.

She willed her fire to settle, and sheathed the now warm blade, not before cleaning it off on the stolen sweater, that she quickly discarded.

Normally, Adan would have scaled the walls and roofs, but she knew there would be more archers waiting. The streets were the only safe option, and it had her slipping back into the crowd.

It seemed the whole city was out protesting now.

All of them with their own reason for pounding the ground with every march. It had started as a call for women to be considered beings, and not things.

But she knew it had grown into something more now.

Adan knew it would have to end with the king's head on a spike and his brut of a son dead.

She looked up at that dark castle as she let the crowd take her closer. Even Cias was in the dark tonight. Nox had also mentioned that his Majesty's candle supply and delivery were sabotaged recently. Adan grinned with feral delight at the thought.

The beacon of Nox's tower still burned bright, and their symbol held strong. Nox had given up a home and an income to accomplish this. Of course, it was brilliant because no one in the City of Bones would ever think it was him. Because none of them would ever blow up such a prize.

In truth, Nox had built it specifically to burn it down, it was never meant to be his home. It was also a small win that Cias technically owned it now. Since Nox had used it as collateral for Adan.

A hand closed around her wrist, she turned, her blade already at her attacker's throat. Ren swallowed hard, "come with me." He released her wrist.

She followed closely behind him. It was like swimming up stream against the wave of people. "Where is he?" She couldn't keep the worry from her voice. She couldn't bring herself to say his name. Who knew who could be listening.

Ren knew who she meant. "He's safe." He reached back for her hand, and she grabbed it, if only so she would not lose him.

She knew he was bringing her to Nox.
