Epilogue
Fifty Years Later
After the chaos, after the loss and the triumph, the world had changed. The ashes had settled, the fire had burned out, but the marks it left were etched into the very soul of the world itself. And for Adan and Nox, the flames of the past could no longer touch them the way they once did.
The sun dipped low on the horizon, casting a golden glow over their farm land. The air was calm, the wildness of their journey finally tamed into something softer, more peaceful. The farm had become their sanctuary, the cabin a place of peace.
Adan stood on the front steps, watching Nox, the man who had saved her, loved her, and never let go. Fifty years, and the flames of their connection still burned as bright as they had when they first met.
She eyed him in the fighting pen, which Nox had converted, strictly for the horse's use.
He led a particularly gentle chestnut around in circles by its reins, while teaching their five-year-old son how to ride.
The way he spoke to Fenix—his voice calm, the quiet laughter in it—was a far cry from the hardened warrior she had once known.
Fenix was the spitting image of his father, shaggy black hair, stubborn as all hell. At five years old, he already had that mischievous twinkle in his eye, a promise of the boldness to come. He seemed to be enjoying himself on top of the horse as he waved brightly towards his watching mother.
His little voice carried across the field in a joyful shout. "Look, mama!"
Adan chuckled softly, her heart swelling with love.
A familiar scent of lavender notified Adan in warning. At thirteen, she was already a force to be reckoned with. Her long, dark hair caught the wind as she slipped silently up behind her mother, a grin tugging at her lips as she assessed the scene before her.
"They'll be at it for hours, you know." Nyx said, her voice low and knowing, her eyes alight with mischief.
"Hello, darling" Adan smiled at her daughter, at her attempt to sneak up on and scare her own mother at her silent arrival.
Maybe one day--but not today. "You see too much for a thirteen-year-old."
She chided, turning back to watch her son, and mate.
Her mis-matched eyes slid sideways to watch her daughter slink up beside her.
"And you're far too surreptitious." but there was affection in her tone, even as she teased her daughter.
Nyx reminded Adan far too much of her younger self.
Adan glanced back at Nox and Fenix, her heart full as she watched the two of them together.
It was a picture of quiet happiness, the kind she never thought she'd have.
Then she turned her attention back to Nyx, her first child, who had grown into a strong, self-assured young woman with a touch of mischief that always kept Adan on her toes.
"Like all our children, they take after their father," Adan murmured softly, her voice full of affection and admiration for the family they had built.
"Only the best parts," Nyx said, her voice light, her smile radiant.
Adan's fingers trailed over the swell of her stomach, feeling the weight of the years but also the lightness of the life they had fought so hard to create. She was content, grounded in a way she had never been before.
"Yes," Adan agreed, her heart full, "only the best parts."
