His expression did not change.
Hale's phone began vibrating without pause. "The statement is spreading. Major outlets are updating. Vale's name is appearing now through the exhibit references."
Victor's cane struck the floor once. "Good."
Hale looked at Dorothy. "Vanessa's forged-test accusation is already collapsing. We will issue a short response from your side: Miss Perry had no involvement in Mr. Raymond's paternity proceedings, and any allegation otherwise is defamatory."
Dorothy nodded. "No mention of the clinic footage in my statement."
"Agreed."
"No language that sounds triumphant."
Hale's expression softened slightly. "Of course."
Victor looked less pleased by that restraint, but did not argue.
Sebastian finally spoke. "Vale will try to distance himself from Vanessa."
"Likely," Hale said.
"He will say he accompanied her as a family friend, or advisor, or because of Werner Holdings."
"Also likely."
Sebastian's eyes narrowed. "Then Raymond's board has a problem larger than paternity."
Dorothy looked at him.
There was the strategist again, sharp and controlled, turning emotional wreckage into structure because structure could be acted upon.
Yet even as he spoke, she saw tension in the line of his shoulders.
He was present, but guarded. Caring, but careful.
The man who wanted to stay and the man protecting himself from being used as a place to rest without truth.
She missed him while he stood beside her.
That realization hurt in a new way.
Hale left to draft the response. Victor followed after one last look at Dorothy, likely to place several phone calls that would make Adrian Vale's next board meeting resemble an execution. The study door closed behind them, leaving Dorothy and Sebastian alone with the frozen screen.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Dorothy looked at the blank edge of the desk rather than at him. "It seems I did not forge a DNA test."
Sebastian's mouth moved faintly. "A relief to your already crowded schedule."
The dry reply was exactly what she had expected.
The warmth beneath it was not as easy.
She turned toward him. "Are you all right?"
His brows lifted slightly, as if the question surprised him.
That told her too much.
"I am not the one Vanessa accused," he said.
"That is not what I asked."
Something shifted in his face.
There it was again, the place between them where care still lived but did not yet know what shape it was allowed to take.
"I am angry," he said after a moment. "At Vanessa. At Vale. At Trevor's board for being exactly as corruptible as most boards are. At the fact that your name had to be dragged through another lie before anyone bothered to expose the truth."
Dorothy waited.
Sebastian looked at the screen, where Trevor's frozen face remained pale and solemn. "And I am angry that part of me wonders what his statement did to you."
The honesty entered the room quietly and stayed there.
Dorothy did not look away this time.
"It relieved me," she said.
His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.
"Not because of him," she added, then stopped because that was not completely true, and they both knew it.
Sebastian's eyes returned to hers.
Dorothy forced herself to continue. "Not only because of him. Because the lie did not become history. Because Vanessa does not get to make me the woman who forged a test to erase Trevor's child. Because one more accusation failed before it could settle over me permanently."
His face softened slightly. "That is a reasonable relief."
"And because Trevor said my name should not be used anymore."
There.
The truth, small and dangerous.
Sebastian looked down.
Dorothy hated the movement, but she did not take the words back.
"That mattered," she said. "I wish it did not. But it did."
Sebastian was quiet for a long moment.
Then he nodded.
Not happily. Not easily. But he nodded.
"I asked for truth," he said.
"You did."
"I did not promise to enjoy it."
"No."
The honesty hurt, but it did not destroy the room.
Perhaps that was something.
Before either of them could say more, the study door opened again. Hale entered quickly, phone in one hand and another printed page in the other. Victor was behind him, his expression now sharpened by a different kind of satisfaction.
"What?" Dorothy asked.
Hale looked at Sebastian first, then Dorothy.
"The board emergency session has been moved up," he said. "Raymond Group is suspending Adrian Vale pending investigation. The press has identified him from the clinic exhibits."
Victor's mouth tightened into something almost like a smile. "And?"
Hale placed the printed page on the desk.
It was a still image from the clinic surveillance, enlarged and sharpened.
Vanessa stood at the intake counter with sunglasses pushed up into her hair, face turned slightly toward the camera.
Beside her, Adrian Vale held the pen over the visitor log, his wedding ring clearly visible on his left hand.
Hale tapped the page once.
"Vanessa's real lover is Adrian Vale, a Raymond board member."
