Chapter 1 Island Survival

[Welcome to the Island Survival Game.]

[Every day from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Treasure Chests will spawn at sea. Players may fish up Treasure Chests using a Fishing Rod to obtain survival resources.]

[Players entered into the game range from ages 16 to 55. Family members will be prioritized for placement in the same area.]

[The Beginner Protection Period lasts three days. Death within the game counts as real death.]

[Game start.]

[Today's weather: Cloudy, 61–81°F]

"......"

Qin Zhen looked around in a daze. Just a moment ago she had been celebrating her fresh start in life and planning to treat herself to hot pot — and in the next instant she had been whisked away to this desolate, uninhabited island.

[Please enter a nickname. If no nickname is entered within ten seconds, your real name will be used.]

A blank input field suddenly appeared before Qin Zhen, with a countdown ticking on the screen.

10... 9... 8...

What on earth is this?

7... 6... 5...

"!" With no time to think, Qin Zhen hurriedly typed in [Qiyezhenzhen].

[Ding! Scanning player information.]

A semi-translucent Status Panel suddenly appeared before Qin Zhen.

[Player: Qiyezhenzhen

Gender: Female

Constitution: 7 (Above average — not bad.)

Intelligence: 9 (Excellent!)

Luck: 8 (Pretty lucky.)

Magic Attribute — Ice Affinity: 8; Light Affinity: 9

Player information? She had really ended up inside a game? And was that Luck score serious? She had always felt like she was unlucky — aside from winning the lottery once, almost nothing fortunate had ever happened to her.

The Status Panel was projected from a watch on Qin Zhen's wrist.

Besides the Status Panel, there was also a Chat Channel, a Trading Zone, a Friends List, and a counter in the bottom-right corner showing the number of players in the current area.

It really did look just like the games Qin Zhen used to play.

By now, the Chat Channel was already in an uproar.

[WoShiNiDie: What the hell is this place?! I was just eating...]

[ZhuyeQing: I was in the middle of using the bathroom...]

[ChenguangStationery: Didn't you hear that voice say this is a survival game?]

[Wanxia: I don't want to be in this awful place — I want to go home!]

[Gangzi: Same, I want to go home too!]

[Nan'an: Doesn't look like we can go back...]

[Chenxu: The Beginner Protection Period is only three days — start gathering supplies now, or you'll die fast!]

Reading through the chat, Qin Zhen felt a wave of unease wash over her.

[Detected that player Qiyezhenzhen's parents have entered the game. Transfer them to this area?]

[Yes / No]

Qin Zhen pressed her lips together and selected No.

Qin Zhen was the True Heiress who had been swapped at birth.

The Qin Family was not well-off, and on top of that they had a spoiled younger brother who was treated like a precious gem.

From childhood, all the household chores had fallen to Qin Zhen, and she was frequently beaten and scolded — her life had been far from good.

When the truth finally came to light, Qin Zhen learned that the Qin Family had treated her poorly not out of preference for sons over daughters, but because they had known all along that she was not their biological child.

They had been the ones who orchestrated the swap between Qin Zhen and the False Heiress, Gu Wan — all so that Gu Wan could have a better life.

Qin Zhen had wanted to go to the police, but Mother Gu couldn't bear to part with the daughter she had raised for twenty years.

Under Gu Wan's tearful pleading, Mother Gu disregarded Qin Zhen's feelings entirely and forgave the Qin Family parents, even keeping Gu Wan by her side — and growing even closer to her than she ever had been to Qin Zhen.

On one hand there was an accomplished adopted daughter who had been raised as a proper young lady for twenty years, excelling in music, chess, calligraphy, and painting. On the other was a biological daughter they had just met, who had grown up in the countryside doing farm work all her life.

Father Gu and Mother Gu chose the former without hesitation — showering Gu Wan with warmth and concern, while leaving Qin Zhen to fend for herself.

But Gu Wan was an absolute White Lotus. Time and again she framed Qin Zhen, causing Qin Zhen to fall further and further out of favor with Father Gu and Mother Gu, who came to see her as a crude, petty-minded person.

When Gu Wan used her old tricks to frame Qin Zhen for smashing Mother Gu's most prized antique vase — worth tens of millions — Qin Zhen had wised up. She had bought a Voice Recorder in advance and captured Gu Wan's true colors on tape, then played the recording when Gu Wan went to tattle.

She had thought that exposing Gu Wan's real face would finally change things, but Gu Wan's eyes reddened and tears rolled down her cheeks as she murmured that she was afraid and anxious because she wasn't their biological daughter — and just like that, Father Gu and Mother Gu's hearts tilted again,

wanting only to sweep everything under the rug.

Qin Zhen's heart went cold. She went straight to the police.

Father Gu and Mother Gu were furious, of course, convinced that Qin Zhen was being vicious — calling the police over something so trivial just to have Gu Wan thrown in jail.

Qin Zhen had no real intention of sending her to jail, and she knew that as long as Mother Gu refused to press charges over the vase, there was no way to do so anyway. She simply wanted to sever ties with both the Qin and Gu families in front of the police, once and for all.

If she kept living with them, Qin Zhen had no idea how much more she would have to endure.

With the help of the police, Qin Zhen successfully transferred her household registration and signed a formal agreement cutting off all relations with Father Gu and Mother Gu.

She had just been about to celebrate with a hot pot meal when she found herself flung into this game world instead.

Now the System was asking whether she wanted her parents brought to her side. Qin Zhen curled her lips in a sardonic smile. They had already made a clean break — let their precious adopted daughter take care of them.

Qin Zhen's thoughts drifted back to the Luck stat. Even someone as unlucky as her had a Luck score of 8 — so what would Gu Wan's be, someone who had been showered with love and favor her whole life? Surely maxed out. How utterly infuriating.

[Treasure Chests are now spawning. Please fish up the Treasure Chests.]

Qin Zhen had only been lost in thought for a short while before she snapped back to her senses. She had no time to wallow in self-pity. She didn't know exactly what this place was.

But everything that mechanical voice had said was surely real — they had been brought here to survive, and death here meant real death in the outside world.

The mechanical voice had also said the Beginner Protection Period was three days. What would happen after those three days? Qin Zhen didn't dare think about it. All she knew was that her most important task right now was to gather as many resources as possible before the protection period ended.

She had already taken stock of what she had: a ten-slot Inventory Bag, one Fishing Rod, and a Dilapidated Thatched Hut that would be utterly useless against any strong wind or rain. She absolutely had to find proper shelter as quickly as possible.

Qin Zhen walked to the water's edge and cast the Fishing Rod's bait into the sea. She waited quietly for a long while until the rod finally gave a faint tug.

Qin Zhen's eyes lit up. She quickly began to reel it in — it was heavy, but having done farm work since childhood, her physical condition was solid enough that she could manage the weight.

What she pulled up was a Wooden Chest, reaching up to her shin. Without opening it, Qin Zhen tucked the Wooden Chest into her Inventory Bag, intending to open it later. For now, she needed to keep fishing.
