Chapter 60 I See Blood in Your Future
The Bennetts and the Wallaces followed her gaze.
Richard stared, then noticed Whitmore beside Ryan and reached his own conclusion.
So Ryan had found a way in. After claiming he had no interest in the dinner, he’d apparently asked the doctor to bring him.
For Chloe, no doubt. And to show Richard he had connections after all.
Richard could already hear the explanation: he’d only come to help with a patient and had no idea which event it was.
How convenient.
Jason’s smile vanished.
Was there nowhere he could go without finding Ryan?
Then he looked at Chloe’s delighted face and felt worse. She’d barely answered him on the way in. One glimpse of Ryan and she lit up.
What was taking Vince so long?
He would call for an update. Remembering that Ryan’s days were numbered improved his mood a little.
Chloe had already crossed the room.
“What are you doing here?”
“Helping Whitmore with a patient.”
She greeted the doctor warmly. He rose with a smile.
“I see some old friends. You two talk.”
Chloe took his seat at once.
“I’m glad you’re here. This would have been a dreadful evening otherwise.”
“With all these handsome, successful men?”
She made a face.
“I don’t know how successful they are. I do know how pleased they are with themselves.”
Jason arrived before Ryan could respond.
“Nice outfit. Did you spend more than seventy-five dollars on all of it?”
His smile was thin.
“You should have asked. I could have lent you a suit.”
Chloe’s expression cooled.
“He can wear what he wants. What business is it of yours?”
Jason flushed.
“It’s disrespectful to the host. Look around.”
Ryan smiled.
“You look sharp. Planning to keep those pants dry?”
Jason went dark red.
“People panic when they think they’re going to die. So what?”
“Nothing. But you seem to have forgotten why you didn’t die.”
Ryan’s tone remained light.
“You don’t have to thank me. Insulting the man who saved you seems a little ungrateful, though.”
Nearby guests had begun listening. Jason felt their attention and hated Ryan more with every second.
“Keep acting untouchable. We’ll see how long it lasts.”
Ryan’s smile changed.
“You know, I see blood in your near future. Be careful.”
Jason sneered.
“I can predict things, too. I’d give you three days.”
“Jason.”
Andrew approached, looking stern.
“Stop wasting your time. Come meet some people.”
Jason held up three fingers before leaving.
“Three days.”
Ryan only smiled.
Richard came over next.
“We couldn’t get you an invitation, but you managed.”
“Whitmore asked me to help with a patient. I didn’t know this was Harrington’s dinner until we arrived.”
Ryan smiled politely.
“A coincidence.”
“Yes,” Richard said. “Quite.”
Ryan studied the man’s expression and understood.
He thought Ryan had engineered it all. Begged Whitmore for an invitation, arranged a chance encounter, and turned up to demonstrate that he belonged among important people.
Apparently, even an explanation could sound like proof when someone had already decided what to believe.
