Chapter Twenty-Five

That night, Foulis Castle glowed softly with lamplight and the scent of peat smoke.

The great hall was hushed; the only sounds were the soft snores of the wounded asleep on pallets placed along the walls and the guards pacing on the ramparts far above.

For the first time in many nights, the castle no longer echoed with fear.

Earlier that evening, six weary warriors rode back through the gates of Foulis with the confirmation that Sorcha was safe. They had delivered her into her brother’s care at her own home, beyond reach and unharmed. For that, Destiny was grateful.

She stood by the hearth, gazing into the fire.

The flames licked over blackened logs, warm and steady, their light painting the stone walls in shades of gold and amber.

Her wounds had been treated, and her body ached from exhaustion, but it was a good ache, one born of survival, of having given all she could.

Behind her, Cameron’s boots scuffed softly across the floor. She turned to find him watching her, his plaid draped loosely over one shoulder, his hair still damp from washing away the grime of battle. He looked utterly worn, and breathtakingly handsome.

“You should rest,” he said gently. “It has been a long day.”

Destiny smiled faintly. “I will. Soon. I just needed a moment to let it all feel real.”

Cameron crossed the space between them, his presence quiet but grounding.

When he reached her, he took her hands in his, his thumb brushing over the strip of plaid still tied around her wrist. “It is real,” he murmured. “We are here. We survived.”

Her heart swelled with so many feelings she could hardly name them. Relief, love, and a deep, humbling gratitude that left her throat tight. “I keep thinking,” she whispered, “of everything that has happened. How close we came to losing it all. How much we have gained. How much I have gained.”

He tilted his head, his gaze searching hers. “And what have you gained, my love?”

She drew in a breath, steadying her voice.

“A home. A family. A husband who fights for what is right, and who taught me what it means to love without fear. I used to think my life was something others would shape for me—my father, fate, even the Crown. But standing here, beside you, I finally understand. My life is mine. And I am thankful, more than I can ever say, for every trial that led me here.”

Cameron raised his hand, cupping her cheek with reverence.

“You are my heart’s strength, Destiny. Every battle I fought was for you, though I did not know such until now.

” He leaned forward then, again pressing his forehead to hers.

“Let this be our new beginning. No more war. No more fear. Only peace.”

She closed her eyes and smiled softly. “And gratitude,” she whispered. “For this day, this life, for you.”

His lips found hers, gentle and lingering, filled with quiet promise. Outside, the wind moved through the heather, carrying away the last echoes of war.

When they finally pulled apart, Destiny curled against Cameron’s chest, feeling his heartbeat steady beneath her cheek.

The firelight flickered over them, soft and golden.

She glanced down at the strip of plaid at her wrist and finally understood that love was not the end of her journey, but the home she had spent her whole life searching for.
