Chapter 5
The faint, hazy light of dawn filtered through the reinforced ventilation grates of the subterranean bunker, casting long, sharp shadows across the cold concrete walls.
Zara woke to the steady, reassuring rhythm of a heart beating against her back.
A heavy, muscular arm was draped securely over her waist, anchoring her firmly against the hard planes of a heavily tattooed chest. She lay perfectly still for a moment, letting her mind sharpen as the last remnants of sleep faded into the humid Louisiana air.
The events of the past forty-eight hours felt like a fever dream of blood, swamp magic, and relentless desire.
Still, the solid weight of the man holding her proved it was all terrifyingly real.
Slipping carefully out of his embrace, she swung her legs over the side of the narrow military cot.
The cool air of the underground sanctuary washed over her bare skin, raising goosebumps along her arms and thighs.
She reached for the pile of tactical clothing they had discarded the night before, pulling dark cargo pants over her ass and securing a heavy leather belt around her hips.
A black moisture-wicking tank top stretched tightly across her large breasts, immediately grounding her in the reality of the violence they were about to unleash.
“You always move so quietly,” a deep, gravelly voice murmured behind her.
Glancing over her shoulder, she watched as Luca sat up on the cot.
His dark, calculating eyes tracked every movement she made with undisguised hunger.
The stark white bandages wrapped tightly around his left bicep were a grim reminder of the syndicate hit squad they had slaughtered just a day ago.
Still, the injury clearly didn’t slow him down.
He moved with the fluid, predatory grace of a panther, stepping off the mattress to retrieve his own discarded gear.
“We have a lot of ground to cover before the syndicate realizes their cleanup crew is rotting in the bayou,” she said, checking the action on her heavily modified Glock.
Satisfied with the crisp mechanical snap, she slid the weapon effortlessly into her thigh holster.
“Lorenzo will be coordinating the search from the heavily fortified estate on the edge of the parish. If we strike now, we catch the head of the snake before he even knows he’s being hunted. ”
“Lorenzo is a paranoid bastard,” he noted dryly, strapping a matte-black tactical vest over his broad, scarred chest. He expertly loaded several spare magazines into his pouches, his movements automatic after years of contracted killing.
“He will have…what? Twenty armed guards patrolling the perimeter of that plantation house, not to mention the automated security systems. It is basically a fortress.”
“Good thing you brought an inside woman,” she countered with a sharp, dangerous smile.
A dark chuckle rumbled deep in his throat as he crossed the small room, his large hands immediately finding the curve of her waist. Pulling her firmly against his chest, he leaned down to capture her lips in a bruising, possessive kiss that tasted faintly of impending violence.
His tongue swept confidently into her mouth, stealing her breath for a long, heavy moment before he finally pulled back.
He glanced around at the canned rations on the shelves. “Let’s grab a bite and then go burn my former employers to the ground, Zara.”
She nodded.
Fifteen minutes later, leaving the relative safety of the underground bunker, they navigated the dense, oppressive labyrinth of the bayou.
The morning air was thick and suffocating, choked with the heavy scent of rotting vegetation and stagnant water.
They moved flawlessly together through the dense cypress trees, acting as a perfectly synchronized unit.
Every time a snapping twig or a sudden splash threatened to reveal their position, they flowed seamlessly into the shadows, covering each other’s blind spots with deadly precision.
By the time the sprawling, opulent antebellum estate finally came into view, the sun was sitting high in the pale southern sky.
The massive white columns of Lorenzo’s mansion stood in stark contrast to the dark, murky swamp that surrounded it.
At least a dozen heavily armed men in dark suits patrolled the manicured lawns, their assault rifles held loosely at the ready.
Crouching low behind a dense thicket of Spanish moss, Zara analyzed the patrol routes with practiced, ruthless efficiency.
“Two on the western gate. Three patrolled the southern gardens. The main entrance is locked down, but the balcony overlooking the conservatory only has a single sentry.”
“I’ll take the garden patrol,” he offered, drawing a wickedly sharp combat knife from its sheath. “You clear the western gate and provide overwatch from the perimeter wall. Once I’m inside the conservatory, we breach the main office together.”
Nodding, she slipped silently through the dense underbrush.
She successfully bypassed the heavy wrought-iron fencing.
She approached the two sentries guarding the western flank.
Adrenaline spiked sharply in her veins, narrowing her vision down to the immediate threats.
She raised her suppressed pistol, aligning the glowing tritium sights perfectly with the base of the first guard’s skull.
The sound of two hollow bullets echoed softly from the barrel. Both men collapsed instantly into the thick swamp grass without uttering a single sound.
Vaulting cleanly over the low stone wall, she secured her position behind a large marble fountain.
From her vantage point, she had a clear line of sight to the southern gardens.
A shadow detached itself from the creeping ivy clinging to the mansion’s eastern wing.
Luca. He moved like a ghost, silently executing the three patrolling guards with brutal, merciless slashes to their throats.
Blood sprayed dark and heavy against the pristine white rosebushes.
Still, the syndicate soldiers were dead before their bodies even hit the ground.
With the exterior patrols effectively neutralized, the pair converged beneath the heavy stone balcony of the conservatory.
Scaling the iron trellis with practiced ease, they hauled themselves over the ornate railing.
They slipped silently through the unlocked glass doors.
The interior of the mansion was cool and excessively lavish, smelling strongly of expensive cigars and polished mahogany.
They moved back-to-back down the heavily carpeted hallway, their suppressed weapons raised.
Whenever a syndicate soldier blindly rounded a corner, a synchronized barrage of silenced gunfire instantly dropped them to the floor.
There was no hesitation, no mercy, and no wasted movement.
They were a singular force of nature, executing a ruthless decapitation strike against one of the men who had dared to treat them as expendable pawns.
Reaching the heavy oak doors of Lorenzo’s office, she stepped to the side, signaling her readiness. Raising his booted foot, Luca delivered a devastating kick that sent the massive door crashing violently inward.
“What the hell is this?” a panicked voice shouted from the center of the opulent room.
Lorenzo, the untouchable capo of the southern syndicate, scrambled desperately backward away from his massive mahogany desk.
Two elite enforcers immediately raised their automatic rifles, but they were far too slow.
She swept into the room, her Glock barking twice in rapid succession.
The enforcers dropped like heavy stones, their skulls shattered by perfectly placed hollow-point rounds.
Stepping casually over the bleeding corpses, Luca stalked toward his former boss. His dark eyes were utterly devoid of emotion, reflecting nothing but the cold, calculating void of a professional killer.
“Luca,” the older man stammered, holding his trembling hands up in a pathetic gesture of surrender.
“You don’t have to do this. Whatever they offered you, I can double it.
Most of the men already fear and respect you.
I can make you my second-in-command. I can give you all the power and money you desire.
Just put the gun down. Both of you and we can talk. ”
“You sent me on a hit and then sent a hit squad after me,” he replied softly, the deadly calm in his voice far more terrifying than any shouting could ever be. “There is not enough money in the world to save your life, Lorenzo.”
Raising his weapon, he pulled the trigger with no hesitation.
The gunshot wound sprayed crimson across the expensive imported wallpaper.
Lorenzo, the syndicate boss he had served for years, slumped lifelessly to the floor, officially ending the reign of the corrupt capo who had tried to double-cross him.
“It’s done,” she breathed heavily, lowering her weapon as the overwhelming silence of the mansion finally settled around them. The heavy stench of cordite and copper filled the air, mixing bizarrely with the subtle fragrance of the blooming conservatory below.
“Not yet,” he corrected, pulling an incendiary grenade from his tactical harness. Pulling the pin, he tossed the explosive casually onto the center of the wooden desk. “Now, it’s done.”
They sprinted down the hallway, escaping through the shattered conservatory doors just as the massive explosion tore through the upper floor of the mansion.
The shockwave pushed them roughly forward into the humid swamp air, raining burning debris across the manicured lawns.
Flames rapidly engulfed the opulent estate, painting the pale afternoon sky in violent, beautiful streaks of orange and black.
Luca looked around. “Lorenzo keeps a skiff near here we can use to put some distance between us. Ready?”
She nodded.
