Six Weeks Later
“Hello?” Sierra answers the phone nearly out of breath.
“You’re not going to believe this!” Under any other circumstances, I’d be upset but the news I received today almost feels like fate. That someone is actually looking out for me. For us.
“What’s going on? Is everything okay?”
“Remember me telling you about Stanley Briggs, the catcher on my team, and how he was a free agent. I just knew someone was going to offer him a huge contract and it would open up the doors for me. Well, guess who signed him for another year?”
“Oh no. I’m so sorry,” she says, her voice suddenly filling with emotion. “I know that’s not the news you were hoping for.”
“I’m happy for Stanley. He’s done a remarkable job with the team so I can’t blame them for wanting to keep him.”
“What does this mean for you?”
“Well, while Stanley was signing his contract, I was signing one of my own. The Carolina Sunrays have offered me a deal and it’s one I can’t pass. They want me to be their starting catcher, Sierra. They want me to come and play for them!” I practically shout into the phone.
“Wait, what?” she exclaims. “Does this mean what I think it does?”
“Yes, babe. I’m going to be moving to Burlington Beach, NC. We’re going to be closer. No more driving at all hours of the night or having to find a last minute flight. Isn’t this great?”
“Miles, this is the best news. I can drive down as soon as I get off work and see you in a matter of hours. I can’t believe it!”
“How soon before you have to move? What about your place in Florida?”
“They want me there next week in time to start Spring Training. Yeah, next week! I’ve already got someone looking for an apartment but I want your input too. Because someone promised they’d be in the stands holding up a sign with my name on it.”
