Epilogue #2
Millie reached up and traced a finger over his strong jaw.
“I’m only returning the favor. You and she are everything I need, too.
I’ve been thinking about her name. I know we were thinking about other names but what about this?
” She looked at Adam as he held their daughter.
“My mother’s name is Sofiya. What is your mother’s name? ”
He gazed up at Millie. “Her name was Catherine.”
“What do you think of Catherine Sofiya Sullivan?”
He grinned down at the baby. “I like it. I’ll probably call her Katie.”
“I can live with that.”
When Katie was just a day old they returned to the ranch.
Millie tried to settle Katie in the nursery that was next to the master bedroom, but Adam had a hard time relinquishing her. He held her and stared out the window at the snow covered mountains.
Millie joined him, wrapping her arms around his waist and resting her cheek against his back. “What are you thinking?”
“I’m wondering what I did to deserve such wonderful gifts as you and Katie.”
Her heart settled and beat the rhythm to match his. “You’re a good man Adam Sullivan. You deserve to be happy.”
“Thank you, my love, for everything.”
“I love you.” She moved around to his side and smiled as he ran his hand over Katie’s head. He couldn’t seem to get enough of her soft brown hair. “She’s asleep.”
“I know.”
“You need to put her down for her nap.”
He stared down at Katie. His lips turned up at the corners. “I just like holding her. It’s like I’m addicted.”
“To some extent, you are. She a part of you…part of us…Besides she’s just so sweet, and I love her baby smell.”
He chuckled. “Yeah, I do to.”
They heard a cheer come up from downstairs.
“Your brothers are celebrating bringing Katie home. I’m surprised they haven’t been up yet to hold her.”
He chuckled. “Oh, they will be. When that happens, we won’t see her during the day except for feedings and diaper changes.”
“Well, if that’s the case, we’ll see her a lot,” Millie laughed. “Speaking of which, it’s time for her to nurse.” She walked over to the old rocking chair, that had belonged to Adam’s grandmother. Millie had made new cushions to create a comfortable place to nurse Katie.
Adam followed with the baby and laid her into Millie’s arms.
Millie prepared herself and then put Katie to her breast.
The baby latched on almost immediately.
Adam sat next to her and watched his daughter eat. He reached over and turned Millie’s face toward him. “I love you more than I ever thought possible and then you gave me this wonderful gift of our daughter. I don’t know how to thank you.”
Millie reached up with her left hand and cupped his jaw. “I love you, too. Thank you for saving me and then giving me this wonderful life.” She ran her hand to the back of his neck and brought his lips to hers for a searing kiss.
Then she and her husband looked down at Katie who’d fallen asleep.
The love in the room was palpable and ever growing.
In the kitchen, Benjamin’s phone sounded. He listened for a moment and narrowed his eyes and furrowed his brows.
The rest of the brothers seemed to sense the change in his demeanor and silenced themselves.
Adam entered the room. “Is everything okay?”
Benjamin smiled. “Looks like someone needs Sullivan Security.”
