Chapter 30
CASSIA
He took her to his home.
Not his office, or some impersonal space. His home—where he lived, where he slept. Where, for stolen hours, the world fell away and he simply existed.
It was a townhouse on a quiet lane in the Demon District, only a few blocks from Aegis & Ash.
As soon as the door clicked open, he stepped aside, letting her enter first. Cassia knew the moment she crossed the threshold: this place was Ark.
Every detail was deliberate—clean lines, curated order, a space without clutter but pulsing with intention.
Warm white oak lined the floor. Hand-painted tiles climbing one wall, their earthen hues fractured by delicate cracks.
A black iron pendant light suspended above a pale marble table.
A linen throw draped over a low-backed chair.
The air carried the scent of steeped pine—subtle, lingering, a habit he’d maintained until it became part of the house.
She passed beneath an archway toward a sideboard where a tall crystal vase held her Flora Notes, all of them, including the ones from the office. Preserved, their petals were still soft, the inked script as fresh as the day she’d written them.
She’d known he kept them, but the sight of those flowers still made her breath catch.
Reaching out, her fingers brushed a velvety magnolia petal. “You keep these as if they’re collectible items,” she said, her tone teasing. “What will you do when you have them all?”
Behind her, his voice came low, amused. “Pray you keep sending them.”
A soft laugh escaped her, even as her chest ached. “They’re just flowers.”
“They aren’t just flowers, Cassia. Each one was a decision. A moment you chose to reach out.”
She turned, and stilled.
He stood just beyond the archway, half-silhouetted by the warm light spilling in from the sconces. Jacket gone. His tie loosened. One hand lifted, deft fingers working the knot free from his throat, each movement effortless.
She couldn’t look away.
The tie slid from his collar with a whisper of silk. Then, he unbuttoned the first, then the second clasp of his shirt, giving her a glimpse of skin—dark gold in the low light, the curve of his throat leading to the hollow at the centre of his chest, one swirl peeking from beneath his silk shirt.
Her mouth went dry.
It was nothing, really. Just a demon unwinding after a formal event.
Yet, here, in the quiet sanctuary of his home, it felt like the disrobing of armour.
A shedding of names and obligations. This was not Varil Arkenoth, the mysterious artifact hunter from Aegis & Ash.
Not the demon heir, or the Daemar’s son.
None of the curated facades he wore so well.
This was Ark. Just Ark.
“I don’t throw out that kind of rare magic,” he said. “Especially not when they bloomed only for me.”
She wasn’t sure when he moved. One moment, she was watching him, and the next, he was pressed against her, and her fingers curled into his collar, tugging him down.
Their mouths met with no preamble. No soft testing. No second-guessing. It was a kiss rooted in knowing—in every look, every longing silence, every brush of fingertips. His lips were hot and sure on hers, his hands finding her waist with that easy confidence he wore like a second skin.
She gasped as he lifted her onto the sideboard, her body flush against his, knees parting to cradle him close. The cold marble beneath her thighs was nothing—forgotten. All she felt was the drag of his mouth, the heat of his palms sliding up her thighs, the ache pooling low in her belly.
He kissed her again, slower this time. Languid. Like he had all the time in the world to memorize her mouth. His tongue teased hers in lazy, deliberate strokes until she was panting, her fingers trembling where they clutched his shirt.
She wanted to burn this moment into her memory. The way he looked at her like she was the only thing that mattered. The way he always touched her with reverence, but with need too, as if some part of him still couldn’t believe he was allowed to have this.
To have her.
She curled her fingers into his hair, tugging gently until he looked up. His gaze was molten. Worshipful.
“I want you,” she whispered.
Those lips quirked. “You have me.”
The bare honesty in his eyes stung hers. He dropped to his knees. Her breath caught from how right it felt. From the sight of him there, between her legs, pressing close, hands sliding up her thighs beneath the layers of her gown.
He kissed the inside of one knee, then the other.
“Cassia,” he murmured, lips brushing the skin just above the seam of her undergarments. “Let me taste you.”
She leaned back, legs parted, breath shaky as he kissed her through the fabric. Then his hands—those hands—slid the scrap of lace down, and his mouth replaced it. Open, slow, reverent.
She moaned, fingers buried in his hair when his tongue found her with devastating precision.
Her hips lifted to meet him, her body arching, eager, a little wild.
But he anchored her—hands on her thighs, mouth moving in a rhythm that scattered her breath and thoughts and everything in between.
A sound tore from her throat that she didn’t recognize.
She moaned his name, over and over as she undulated against him, the syllables dissolving like sugar on her tongue.
And still, he devoured her.
She let him. Because if these were to be her final moments with him . . . then let her remember the way he worshipped her. Let her remember how he fell to his knees to make her feel like a queen.
Ark rose slowly, hands sliding up the backs of her thighs as he stood.
She didn’t realize what he intended until he gripped her waist. She moved with him instinctively, wrapping her legs around his hips, her arms around his shoulders.
Their mouths met again—hot, messy, breathless—as he carried her deeper into his home.
Past tall archways and warm oak paneling.
Past soft light spilling through frosted glass and into the bedroom.
The room was simple. Shadowed. Beautiful. Like the rest of his home, it felt intentional. Clean lines softened by texture—linen sheets, a carved wooden headboard, a dark wall hung with something soft and woven. A single lamp cast the space in a dim, amber glow.
He lowered her to the edge of the bed, hands cradling her like she was glass. She sat up slightly, fingers at the clasp of her gown—but he beat her to it.
“Let me,” he whispered.
His mouth ghosted her jaw as he worked the fastenings, voice rough against her skin.
Fabric slipped from her shoulders, pooling around her waist. Cool air kissed her bare skin.
Then his hands, reverent and warm, swept down her sides.
He kissed her collarbone. Her sternum. The swell of one breast. His breath skated across her skin as he undressed her slowly, like this wasn’t just undressing, but unwrapping something for which he’d spent his whole lifetime waiting.
He stood. She watched him undo the buttons then shrug his shirt off with practiced ease. Her eyes dragged over the stretch of skin revealed—broad shoulders, the lean cut of muscle, the strength he always wore so discreetly beneath impeccable tailoring.
Her breath caught again from the sheer beauty of him.
The broad planes of his chest. The ridges of his abdomen.
The dark lines of his markings appeared and disappeared like ink and runes across golden skin.
His horns gleamed under the dim light. He looked every inch the demon lord—until he stepped closer and knelt like a man about to worship.
His hand brushed the side of her neck—right over the bond mark that shimmered faintly at his touch. Then his fingers were on her, inside her, coaxing her open with a deliberate patience that belied the tension shuddering through his arms. He was holding back. Barely.
Cassia arched into his hand, her lips parting on a breathless moan. His mouth found her bond mark. He didn’t speak at first. Just breathed her in, the heat of him pressed so close she could feel his restraint unraveling.
Then, low and hoarse, he said, “Let me renew it. Let me make you mine again.”
Her eyes fluttered open, gaze catching his. Something raw passed between them—a tether tightening. She nodded. She knew she shouldn’t, knew that in a matter of hours, there would no longer be them. But she wanted to pretend, for now, that this wasn’t the end.
His teeth grazed her. His mouth pressed fully against the mark, and as he suckled her flesh, her magic answered—a silent, expanding wave of heat and light.
She didn’t realize she was crying until he kissed her, his mouth gentling hers even as his fingers stayed inside her, stroking her through every tremor the bond reignited.
She arched up, clinging to him as he broke the kiss, his mouth returning to the mark on her neck—tongue and teeth working in rhythm with his fingers, pushing her higher, until she shattered.
She cried out his name, the bond mark lighting up like a constellation reborn. But he didn’t give her time to recover. He rose above her, grabbed her hips, and pressed forward.
“The first time,” he panted, lining himself up, “will be fast. I need you too much. But after—”
“After,” she whispered, cupping his jaw, “we take our time.”
He thrust, and the world fractured. She stretched around him with a sharp gasp, pleasure spiking through her as he filled her completely—like he was meant to be there. Her body remembered him, softening around him. She dug her nails into his shoulders, her thighs trembling as he began to move.
He tried to move slowly at first, but restraint had no place here—not when the heat of him was so overwhelming, not when she could feel herself clenching around him like she couldn’t bear to let him go.
His hips snapped forward. She arched beneath him, arms looping around his neck as her fingers tangled in his hair.
She met him, breathless, desperate, rising to match his rhythm.
The new bond pulsed. Every time his mouth brushed it, she trembled.
“Ark—”
“I know,” he rasped, his forehead touching hers. “I know.”
She could feel him everywhere—in her, around her, written into the ache and the ecstasy.
Her lips found his shoulder, his collarbone, his throat, anywhere she could reach.
Her tongue traced the inky runes on his sternum, swirling around his nipple.
He made a sound—half groan, half vow—and thrust harder, deeper, until the world narrowed to heat and skin and the unbearable, beautiful pressure of being so thoroughly claimed.
She reached for his horns again, fingers curling around the base. Just as before, his whole body shuddered. His rhythm faltered, hips driving deeper as a growl tore from his chest.
“Cassia,” he gritted, like her name was the only thing anchoring him.
She was spiraling. Her body trembled around him, desperate and undone, clutching him as her release crept closer. He kissed her—hard, searing—then broke away to look at her, to witness her moment of completion.
“Let go,” he said, breathless. “I’ve got you.”
With a cry torn from somewhere marrow-deep, she shattered—light flashing behind her eyes, muscles tightening around him as he groaned and followed her into the dark.
And for one blinding moment, she let herself believe this night might be forever.
ARK
She was still trembling, body slick with the warmth of their first fall together, when she turned and offered herself to him again.
No words. Just that look over her shoulder—dark-eyed, open-mouthed—and he forgot every oath of restraint he’d ever sworn.
He moved behind her, the hunger quickly rising again. He cupped her hips, thumbs sweeping the dip of her back. She fit in his hands like something sculpted by fate for no one but him.
“Cassia,” he breathed. The word barely made it out. “If only you knew what you do to me.”
He slid his palm up her spine, and she arched, pressing back against him.
A low growl coiled in his chest. He nudged her thighs farther apart with his knee, watching how she shivered when the cool air kissed her slick skin, and guided himself back inside her.
Her body clenched around him, a perfect, silken pressure that stole his breath.
He braced himself—one hand on the curve of her lower back, the other curling into the sheets beside him.
His hips met hers with a firm grind, slow at first, then gaining strength. Again. Again. Her cries rose beneath him, soft at first, then ragged. He angled his thrusts and she gasped, her arms buckling. She dropped her head to the mattress.
Gods, he loved her like this—wild, utterly undone.
He gripped her hips harder, drove into her, setting a punishing rhythm that had her breath stuttering with every thrust. He bent over her, chest brushing her back, mouth finding the shell of her ear.
“This,” he whispered in her ear, “is what you do to me.”
His name tore from her throat. He reached around her, found the soft pulse between her thighs, and rubbed in tight, wet circles.
She clenched and twisted beneath him, her rhythm faltering, and the last thread of his resistance snapped.
His hips drove harder, faster, greedy for the sounds she made.
The bond mark on her neck pulsed beneath his lips and he bit down—gently, not enough to break skin, just enough to feel her shudder.
When she came again—shaking, sobbing—he lost himself completely.
Buried to the hilt, pressed flush against her back, he spilled inside her with a hoarse, strangled groan.
His vision whited out. His hips kept moving, chasing the last waves of pleasure, until he collapsed against her, trembling, deeper than he’d ever been.
