CHAPTER 26 #4
The kitchen at seventeen hundred is warm in the way a kitchen is warm at the dinner hour on a winter night when the household is intact and the day's work has been done and the day's enemy is still alive in his apartment in the financial district but not yet here.
Helene has had the Hinckley make a run back to Beacon Bay this afternoon and the staff at the Tessellate, who keep a small Christmas Eve kitchen even when the council is in session, have sent up a cassoulet in a battered black enameled cast-iron the size of a small wheel, and a roast goose under a brown linen cloth, and three loaves of a dense walnut bread, and a half-wheel of a Comté old enough to crystalize at the edges, and the Hinckley has come back in two hours and the food has been brought up the private elevator in two trips by Helene herself.
She sets the cast-iron on the Lacanche to warm. The kitchen smells of duck fat and white beans and the small bitterness of preserved garlic. She unpins her own cobalt enamel pin from her cardigan and lays it on the marble island beside her steel kit. She catches my eye. She nods at my lapel.
"Your mother's, mia cara."
"Yes."
"Bene. It belongs in the room you stood in today."
"Thank you, Helene."
"It is not me you thank. It is the woman who pinned it to your collar twenty years ago. " She puts her own pin back on the cardigan. She moves to the cassoulet.
Adrienne pours the wine. A Burgundy whose name I let pass; she pours it with the steady wrist of a woman who has been pouring wine in this kitchen since nineteen-eighty-two.
Six small glasses, allotted only to the living and the present.
She pours one for Helene, one for Sebastian, one for Henrik (who takes it but stops at a sip — he has the lobby at eight), one for herself, one for Julian, one for me.
Sebastian is in the doorway. He has not sat down. He says, "Quinn."
"Crowe."
"You did the job."
"I did the job."
"The proxy got into a black Town Car at the loading dock at fifteen-eleven. The car is on I-ninety-five south. He will be in the financial district apartment by twenty-thirty."
"Yes."
"Voss will read the rebuttal again tonight. He will be in the apartment at the desk at twenty-three hundred. He will be alive at midnight. He will not be alive on Friday."
"Vance will handle the second question."
"Yes."
"And you and Henrik."
"Yes, Quinn. " He lifts his glass an inch. "The pin."
I look down at the cobalt at my lapel. The acknowledgment is the whole comment. He lifts the glass an inch and sets it down and goes back to the doorway.
Helene lays out plates. Adrienne pulls the small stool over from the corner so Pippa-and-Cora's two empty places have an honest gap and not an awkward straightness.
We sit five at the island — Julian, me, Adrienne, Helene, Henrik for a small plate before he goes back down — and Sebastian eats standing in the doorway, because that is where he eats now.
I take a small spoonful of the cassoulet.
The white beans are softened almost to silk by the duck fat.
The garlic at the back of my throat is the small bitterness of the slow simmer of a long afternoon and I have not eaten anything since the coffee at eight and the muscle at the corner of my jaw flexes once at the first taste — not at a lie, because I am not telling one, but at the small surprise of being fed at the end of a day that has been about taking apart a man.
Julian sees it. In silence, he pours me a half-glass of water and sets it at my right hand.
Adrienne lifts her glass. "Repose en paix, Marcus Hale."
"To Marcus."
"To Marcus."
"To Marcus."
We drink.
We do not toast Konstantin. We do not toast the seat.
We do not toast Ines (Adrienne has the small private candle for her tonight at the kitchen island; the candle is lit at the right of the cobalt pin she has set down at the corner of the marble; the candle will burn through the night).
We do not toast the audit. We do not toast each other.
We have the cassoulet and the bread and the wine and the goose, and Julian eats his half-plate the way a man eats when he is keeping company and not when he is fed, and Sebastian eats his standing the way a man eats when he is going back down to the lobby in twenty minutes, and Henrik eats his in five bites and is gone, and Helene eats hers slow and thorough and reaches across the marble to push the cheese closer to me at the end.
"Mangi."
"I am."
"More."
"Yes, Helene."
The light is the gray light of a Helmsmouth Christmas Eve at five in the afternoon at twenty-eight degrees with no wind.
The harbor outside the great room is glass-flat.
Somewhere four blocks east a window in a financial-district apartment has a lamp on that is throwing a yellow rectangle onto a desk where Konstantin Voss is reading the rebuttal a council steward delivered to him at three this afternoon.
Somewhere in the rail district Cora and Pippa are sitting at a kitchen table with two of Henrik's people and Cora is writing names down in her notebook and Pippa is on her sixth coffee.
Somewhere in Helene's clinic on forty-two the cobalt enamel pin of Ines Calder is sitting on the desk in the small white ring of an examination light because nobody has moved it since Monday morning.
Tomorrow is Christmas Day. Tomorrow morning at ten Reginald Hawkes will come to this building in his navy three-piece with the wool worn at the elbow but clean and he will sit at the black marble of the Vault Room with his Mont Blanc one-forty-nine and he will sign the audit-hash chain on paper in front of me and the audit will be mortal record.
The variance Marcus flagged thirty-six days ago at nine-twelve on a Monday morning in a quarterly pre-flight will go onto Reginald Hawkes's ledger at the senior-partner level of Wren-Hale and from Hawkes's ledger into the SEC's case-management database under a seal that will be lifted at the council's discretion and not before.
Friday at eleven the chamber will reconvene and the clause-four vote will name the mortal-exposure path and Thea will be in the chair and Cyrus and Iliana and Beaufort will be in the chair and Drake will vote no again and the vote will be six-two-one again and the council will hand the mortal-exposure piece to Vance Holdings counsel and Reginald Hawkes and to the captured vampire who is in a holding cell on floor thirty-eight turning evidence.
Friday at midnight or Saturday at dawn — Vance will handle the third question.
Konstantin is still alive. The pin at my lapel is the cobalt enamel of a woman who has been dead five years and was an R-N at New England Methodist and would have read the audit on a yellow legal pad in her kitchen with a red pen and would have circled the V without the saber-arm tremor twice and would have written got him in the margin in her small slanted hand and would have looked up at me over the rim of her reading glasses and would have said, in the small dry voice she saved for the moments she was proudest, that's my girl.
Julian's hand, under the marble of the island, finds my left wrist and rests over the chemical-burn scar of nineteen years ago. The weight is light, steady, held.
I drink the wine. I take a small bite of the cheese.
I look at the pin in the corner of the marble where Adrienne has set her own small candle for Ines, and I look at my mother on my own lapel, and I think: tomorrow I will see Reginald Hawkes in person, and the audit hash will become mortal record, and the day after tomorrow Vance will draw a saber I have looked at twice and not yet seen in his hand, and then the bond, and then the dawn, and then Foundry Square.
I think it in the order of the days. I think it in monosyllables. I think it in the small dry voice my mother saved for the moments she was proudest.
The cassoulet is warm. The kitchen is warm.
The harbor is gray. The proxy is on I-ninety-five south.
Konstantin is in an apartment in the financial district at a desk with a lamp on.
I am at this island with these five people, and the brass pencil is in my pocket, and my mother's pin is on my lapel, and the cobalt enamel is the same cobalt as Helene's and not the same at all, and I have stood at a wall today and put my mouth on the words and the man who killed Marcus is still alive but the seat is empty and the room is empty and the spreadsheet on the matte-black wall has been turned off, and tomorrow at ten Reginald Hawkes will sign in navy three-piece in the Vault Room, and the audit will be on paper, and my mother — across the marble island, across the harbor, across the five years she has been gone — will have read it.
