Chapter 40
THE OFFER
I’m welcomed back by the sweet scent of the Irish countryside as I arrive, home, to Innisfree.
Nostalgia rushes over me, coupled with a strong determination to find the answers I crave.
The wind whips through my hair, and I draw my coat tighter in response to its chill.
Taking in the vibrant shades of green that make up this beautiful place, I’m overwhelmed by a deep sense of belonging and connection to my past. And now also to my present and future.
Armed with Matilda’s first-edition book, dear friends and true courage, I am ready.
No more suppressing or hiding away from my past; it’s time to embrace it and grow.
My feet crunch on the pebbles of The Lake House path as I fill my lungs with fresh air and summon the courage to seize every opportunity that life has to offer.
When I reach the edge of the sparkling lake, I carefully slip off my clothing, piece by piece, until I’m standing in nothing but goosebumps.
I close my eyes and take a deep breath before plunging into the cool depths. Just as my father before me.
After my swim, I glance at my phone. There’s a new notification from Jonathan.
I call him and he tells me the anonymous overseas bidder has reached out about the property, upping their original offer if we remove the clause regarding tenants.
He asks me how I want to proceed, though I suspect he already knows my answer.
My response is simple – I’m declining their offer. The Lake House is no longer available, now and forever.
It’s good to be home.
I prepare for the night ahead, my first as the proud new owner of The Lake House.
It’s been a while since I’ve had this feeling – the feeling of coming home to a place that’s truly mine.
First night in my family home. First night going to sleep without the burden of a sale or deadline or money worries hanging over me.
What a luxury to start dreaming before I even shut my eyes.
I check my phone one last time. A message from Rory, Lenka’s personal assistant.
