Chapter 3 #2

The hall releases its held breath. Wolves return to their meals, their conversations, the ordinary rhythms of a pack that has just absorbed a command it doesn't understand and filed it under the category of things the alpha does that they don't question.

Because that is how this works. My word.

Their compliance. The structure holds because I hold it.

I take a plate. I eat without tasting anything.

Thane approaches and briefs me on the supply route from the southern farms, on the repair schedule for the outer wall, on a dispute between two sentries over patrol rotation.

I give answers. I make decisions. I'm running my pack the way I've run it every day for eight years, and underneath every word and every judgment there's a frequency I can't turn off.

Her breathing. Her pulse. Her body across mine.

The sound she made when she stopped being able to stay silent.

The terms aren't finished. The discipline established the boundary. The rest of the lesson hasn't been delivered, and an incomplete lesson is worse than none at all. It teaches the subject that there's a limit to what you'll do. A limit is a gap she'll find a way through.

I take a second plate. Bread, cheese, dried meat, a cup of water. I carry it up the stairs. I'm not bringing her food because I care whether she's hungry. I'm bringing it because a warhorse you intend to ride needs to be fed, and the logic of that comparison doesn't bother me the way it should.

The door to my chambers is still closed.

The last light has bled from the window, and the fire has burned low, throwing long shadows across the walls.

Somewhere below, the Tower is settling into its nighttime rhythms: the changing of the gate watch, claws on flagstone, a raven calling from the battlements.

Eleanor is sitting on the edge of the bed in the dark, her hands in her lap, her hair half undone from its braid.

She has pulled a fur around her shoulders.

Her bound hands are raised to the side of her neck, fingers reaching for the tail of her plait.

I watch her find the end of it—what's left after the ride and the discipline have pulled it apart—and tug. Once. Twice.

The gesture is small and practiced and completely unconscious. I noted this tell at Dover: she does it when she's frightened and doesn't want anyone to see. Useful. I file the confirmation and let her keep the habit. The longer she doesn't know I can read it, the longer it works for me.

She doesn't look up when I enter.

I set the plate on the table beside the bed. "Eat."

Her eyes lift to the plate, then to me. The look on her face is something I haven't seen from her before.

Stripped back, exposed, without the rage or the tactical armor she wears like a second skin.

She hasn't had time to dress it in anything yet.

It lasts for a fraction of a second. Then the wall comes back up, fast and seamless, and she reaches for the bread without a word.

She eats. I watch her. The firelight plays across her collarbones, the line of her jaw, the tendons in her hands as she tears the bread apart.

She eats carefully, not fast, taking each bite with the measured discipline of a woman who has spent years managing rations.

She drinks the water in small sips. She doesn't thank me. She doesn't speak.

I wait until she finishes.

"On your knees."

Her hands go still on the empty cup. Her eyes come up to mine, and what fills them is a hatred so concentrated it lands like a physical thing. Dangerous. The kind of look that precedes the kind of decision I'll have to manage for weeks. Her mouth thins. Her fingers tighten around the cup.

"No."

"That wasn't a request."

"I heard what it was." Her voice is level. Scraped raw but controlled. "I just wanted it on the record."

The words land. She wants me to register what I'm doing, not because she thinks I'll stop, but because she wants it on the record between us. She's building a ledger, and she's making me sign every entry.

Silence. The fire pops. Outside the window, the river murmurs against stone.

She holds my gaze. Long enough to make the refusal felt. Long enough to establish that what comes next isn't compliance but a calculation. She has weighed the cost of fighting me again, measured it against what her body can sustain, and made a decision that has nothing to do with obedience.

She sets the cup down. She slides off the edge of the bed. She goes to her knees on the stone floor, her bound hands in her lap, her chin raised, her eyes burning up at me with enough heat to melt the iron brackets on the walls.

I undo the lacing of my breeches and free myself. I'm already hard. Have been since the discipline, since the hall, since I walked back up these stairs with her body still imprinted on my thighs. The length of my cock against the firelight isn't something she can pretend she didn't see.

Her gaze drops to it. Holds. Her teeth set behind closed lips, and I watch her consider biting.

The calculation running behind her eyes, weighed and discarded in the same breath.

She's tactical to the bone, already calculating what she can learn from this.

What advantage she can file away. What piece of information she can extract from the man who is about to put his cock in her mouth.

I step forward. My fingers find her hair, what remains of the braid, and I wrap the loose strands around my fist once.

A slow, deliberate gathering that pulls her head back just enough to angle her face toward mine.

Her throat extends. Her pulse flutters in the hollow below her jaw.

The bond feeds me the rhythm of it, fast and hard, and my body responds with a surge that tightens every muscle from my hips to my chest.

"Open your mouth."

She doesn't. Not immediately. The muscles in her throat work through a swallow she can't hide, and her chin stays raised while something wages a war I can watch but not hear.

Her pride is a physical thing. I can see it in the set of her shoulders, the tendons in her neck, her bound hands gripping each other in her lap hard enough to whiten the knuckles.

She's deciding how much of herself this costs. Not whether to comply. She's already done that calculation. She's deciding how to comply and keep something. What piece of herself she can hold back while her mouth does what I've told it to.

She finds it. I see the moment it settles: her eyes harden, her jaw unlocks, and what's left on her face isn't submission. It's a woman choosing which weapon to pick up next.

Her lips part, her eyes fixed on mine, and what lives in that gaze is a promise that every second of this is being recorded and committed to the memory of a woman who forgets nothing and forgives less. She will use this. I don't know how. I don't care.

I guide myself past her lips, and the first contact—the wet heat of her tongue, the stretch of her mouth around me—sends a jolt from the base of my cock straight up through my spine.

A low vibration hums against me from the back of her throat.

Involuntary. It travels through my shaft and settles at the root, and my fingers tighten in her hair hard enough that she gasps.

The gasp opens her wider and I push deeper, watching her jaw stretch around me, watching her eyes water, watching her hands curl into fists in her lap because she has nowhere else to put what she's feeling.

I set the pace. Slow. Deliberate. Pulling back until only the head rests on her lower lip, slick and heavy, then pushing forward in a measured stroke that fills her mouth again.

Each thrust controlled, because if I let go of the rhythm I’ll lose the last thread connecting my actions to anything resembling strategy, and what happens after that won't be slow.

Her tongue curls against the underside of my cock on every stroke, a flat pressure that makes my thighs lock, and the wet sounds her mouth makes against me echo off the stone walls.

Her mouth is hot and slick and tight. Her tongue moves against me with an instinct that has nothing to do with experience and everything to do with the bond lighting up every nerve she has.

My wolf is pressed so far forward against the inside of my skin that I can feel it in my teeth.

"Deeper. Suck me down and breathe through your nose."

She takes me deeper. Her bound hands come up against my thigh, bracing, and I feel the rope scrape my leg as she adjusts. Her eyes are still open. Still locked on mine. Still furious, still recording, still promising consequences.

She hollows around me, the suction pulling a groan from somewhere I didn't authorize, and the muscles in her throat contract as I hit the back of her mouth.

Spit gathers at the corners of her lips and slides down her chin.

She doesn't pull back. She holds me there while her whole face trembles and her eyes stream, and the defiance in that—the refusal to flinch even with my cock in her throat—makes my hand shake in her hair.

One tremor. She sees it from her knees. I see her see it.

That is the first crack in my control she has found, and she found it on the floor of my chambers with her mouth full and tears running down her face.

I pull out. Her mouth releases me with a wet, obscene sound that fills the room, and she sits back on her heels, breathing hard through swollen lips, spit on her chin, her eyes glittering in the firelight.

She wipes her mouth with the back of her bound hands.

The gesture is defiant and pointed, and it sends a bolt of heat through me that isn't compatible with controlled behavior.

I lift her off the floor. One arm under her knees, one behind her back. She doesn't fight the carrying. She goes rigid, stiff as iron in my arms, her body refusing to soften even as I set her on the bed and cover her with my weight.
