Chapter 14 #2

He lets me lead. The passivity is so unlike him that it registers as its own kind of alarm.

The alpha who has spent every night in this bed commanding my body is standing still while I kiss him with a softness that belongs to the woman I was before Dover.

The fact that he's accepting it tells me more than any raven's message about what is coming.

I undress him. I've never done this. He's always undressed me, or undressed himself, or been undressed by the urgency of both of us tearing at fabric.

Tonight I unlace his tunic and push it from his shoulders.

I run my palms down his arms, feeling the muscle move beneath the skin.

I unlace his trousers and push them down.

He steps out of them. Then he's bare in front of me, the firelight finding every scar and every mark I've left on him. He stands there and lets me look.

I undress myself. Slowly. Watching his face while I do it. His eyes are open again, and what's in them is a devastation so controlled it could pass for calm. Only the bond tells me the truth: the tremor running through him, his body vibrating with the effort of staying still.

I take his hand and lead him to the bed.

He follows.

The word is inadequate for what this means.

Ryland doesn't follow. He leads, he commands, he positions, he takes.

No night we've shared has ever started with me walking to the bed and him coming after me.

The reversal isn't submission. It's trust, and trust from Ryland is so rare I don't know how to hold it without cutting myself on the edges.

I lie back and pull him over me. His weight settles against my body, familiar now, the specific heaviness of him that I have learned to want.

His forearms frame my head. His face is close enough to mine that I can see the flecks of darker color in his irises, the threads of exhaustion at the corners of his eyes.

"Eleanor," he says again. My name like a word in a language he's learning, each syllable placed with care.

"I'm here," I tell him. The same words I said at Dover when his hand slid between my thighs and his mouth shaped possession against my ear.

But the meaning has changed. At Dover, ‘I'm here’ meant: despite what you are, despite what you've done.

Tonight, ‘I'm here’ means: I'm not going anywhere. Not yet. Not tonight.

He lowers his mouth to mine and kisses me, and the kiss is slow and searching and nothing I recognize from the man who has spent weeks claiming my mouth like he claims territory.

No teeth. No force. His lips move against mine with a deliberation that makes my chest ache, as if he's conducting a survey he knows he won't get to repeat.

His hand moves down my body. Tracing, not taking. His palm runs from my collarbone to my breast, cupping the weight of it, his thumb circling the nipple until it hardens against his skin.

His gaze follows his own hand as it moves, his expression focused with the same intensity he brings to fortification maps, except the territory he's mapping is my body and the attention feels like goodbye.

I don't say that. I don't say any of the words forming behind my teeth because naming what's happening would break whatever fragile suspension is keeping us here, in this bed, in this stillness, before whatever comes next arrives to claim us.

His mouth follows his hand. Down my throat, across my collarbone, to my breast. He takes my nipple between his lips and the pressure is gentle enough to make me gasp, because tenderness from Ryland is the one thing my body hasn't been trained to anticipate.

He moves to the other breast. Takes his time. His hand slides lower, over my belly, over the bone of my hip. When his fingers find me I'm already wet. The sound he makes against my breast when he discovers it is so quiet I almost miss it.

He touches me with a patience that borders on cruelty. Two fingers parting my folds, sliding through the slickness, circling the nub at the top with a pressure so light it makes my thighs shake.

He knows exactly how to make me fracture.

He's spent weeks learning it, learning every response, building a map of my body's surrenders with the same thoroughness he applies to defense perimeters.

Tonight he's using all of that knowledge, but the tempo is wrong.

Too slow. Too careful. As if the objective isn't my orgasm but my experience of every second leading to it.

I reach for him. My hand wraps around his cock and he makes a sound I've never heard from him. Something closer to grief than pleasure, low and involuntary, and his forehead drops against my breast and his body goes rigid under my grip.

I stroke him. Slow. Matching the tempo he set for me.

The velvet-over-iron heat of him fills my palm, and his breathing turns ragged against my skin.

I run my thumb over the head, spreading the moisture there.

His fingers stutter against me, losing the rhythm.

The loss of control is so unlike him that my eyes burn.

"Come here," I whisper.

He positions himself between my thighs and pushes into me, and the slowness of it is unbearable. Every inch deliberate. Every increment registering through the bond with a clarity that strips away every defense I have left.

My body opens for him differently tonight, no bracing, no resistance, just the slow spread of heat as he fills me, and without force every nerve ending registers louder. He fills me completely and holds there, not moving, his forehead against mine, his breathing unsteady.

The bond between us is a living thing. his heartbeat registers in my own chest, a doubled rhythm, mine and his running parallel but not quite synchronized.

The intimacy of it is more naked than the sex. Having him buried in me is familiar now. His heartbeat inside my ribs is new, and the newness of it is what makes my throat close.

He moves. Slow. Each stroke measured and complete, pulling nearly out of me before pressing back in, and the fullness of each return makes me grip him.

The muscles in his back work beneath my hands with a control that costs him visibly, each thrust restrained in a way I can feel in the tremor of his arms, the tension in his stomach where it presses against mine.

Habit surfaces like a reflex. Registers the tenderness. Cross-references it against the raven, the torches, the council I wasn't invited to attend, and returns a conclusion I don't want: he's giving me the version of himself I can survive losing.

I shove the thought down and grip him harder, because if I let the analysis run I'll lose this, and I want this more than I want to be right.

He watches my face. His eyes stay on mine with an attention that holds nothing back, and what I see in them is the one thing Ryland has never shown me willingly.

Need.

Not desire. I've seen desire from him. I've felt it in the bruises on my body and the sting of his palm and how he drives into me when the discipline burns away everything but hunger. Desire from Ryland is a weapon.

This is different. This is the man beneath the alpha looking at me as if I'm the only solid thing in a room full of collapsing walls.

The devastation of that expression isn't what undoes me. What undoes me is that I'm the same. He's the structure I built my captivity around, and if he falls, I fall with him, and neither of us has a contingency for that.

"Eleanor," he says. A third time. My name like a prayer said by a man who doesn't believe in prayer.

"Don't stop," I tell him. Because his rhythm is faltering, the careful pace beginning to fray at the edges, and through the bond his restraint is fraying, the urge to take, to grip, to drive, to be the man he's been every other night.

He's holding himself back with an effort that's visible in the cords of his neck and the tremor in his arms, and I don't want him to fight it. I want him to stay here, in this impossible care, for as long as he can hold it.

"You can break me tomorrow," I tell him quietly. "Tonight just be here."

He holds it.

He fucks me like I matter. Not like I'm his.

Like I matter. The distinction is so fine it might not exist for anyone else.

But I've spent weeks inside the vocabulary of his body.

I know the difference between possession and presence, between taking and tending.

What he's doing tonight is something I don't have a word for because no one has ever done it to me before.

His hand slides between us and finds the place where we're joined, his thumb circling above where his cock enters me, and the dual sensation builds with a patience that mirrors his strokes.

I feel the orgasm gathering like a tide, slow and inevitable, and when it arrives it rolls through me in long, shuddering waves, my inner walls clenching around his cock in contractions that register through the bond as his breath catches, my thighs tightening against his hips, my spine arching off the bed.

Sounds pull from my throat that I don't try to contain.

His eyes stay on me as I come. He holds my gaze through every second of it.

His expression doesn't change. The steadiness of his attention while my body breaks apart around him is the most intimate thing that has ever happened to me.
