Chapter Fifty-Six
Hoxa
Back in the present, Amelia gave an exaggerated bow. “That’s my sad, sad story and here we are,” said Amelia. “I could have made a fair bit of cash until you decided to wreck my plans. You really are a sucker, Liv. I thought we were kindred spirits.”
She looked at Liv, her eyes narrowed. “But perhaps it’s not too late for you to be helpful. You could help me escape, you know. I’d pay you. I’ve still got enough in the bank. If you just let me go and say I wasn’t here.”
Liv stared at this woman who thought she was so clever, but wasn’t even a particularly successful con artist. Liv decided to play for time, telling herself that surely the police would be here soon.
Liv said, “How do I know I can trust you? You lied about everything before.”
Amelia shrugged. “Well, I guess we’re both as desperate as each other. We really are very alike.”
In the distance, Liv thought she heard the sound of a car approaching. It must surely be the police. The sound came closer. Amelia glared at Liv, tensed her body and desperately tried to shove her out of the way. She had underestimated her half-niece.
“You need to face up to what you’ve done,” panted Liv, grabbing Amelia and shoving her face down on the floor. Liv might be skinny but she was wiry and strong and managed to force Amelia’s arms behind her back.
“And you couldn’t be more wrong,” said Liv clearly. “I Am Nothing Like You.”
Amelia struggled and shrieked but Liv held on.
