Chapter 85

Chapter 85

S hep slept in my lap most of the flight. Drooling on my shirt. Must have been the ice cream just prior to takeoff. Summer said she liked that look on me. So I said, “What look is that?”

“The ‘with kid’ look.”

It was the first time she’d ever really suggested she’d like children of our own. “Are you saying you want us to try to do that?”

She smiled. Raised both eyebrows. “I did wear that stupid bikini.”

“It’s not stupid.”

“Well, I’m never wearing it in front of any other human being. It’s for your eyes only.”

She looked like she had something else to say but didn’t. I pressed her. “So are you saying you want to try?”

“Well, you’ve had a lot on your plate, and I didn’t really know the right time to—”

“Honey.” About here I realized I was a little slow on the uptake when it came to women, especially those within my own house. I needed both a manual and a keeper. I whispered, “Do you want to try to have another child? One of our own?”

Summer tried to hide her true feelings. She bit her lip.

“I mean, can you? We’re not spring chickens.”

She weighed her head side to side. “Technically, I still can.”

At this point, Angel saw us whispering. “What are you two lovebirds talking about?”

I had no idea how to communicate this. I gestured to Summer. “All yours.”

Angel smiled. “Oh, you’re talking about the thing, aren’t you?”

Summer pulled her knees into her chest and tried to hide both tears and a smile. Her face was flushed. Angel shook her head. “You two should get a room.”

“How is it that everyone knows the details of my personal life long before I do?” I guess I spoke loud enough to be heard by those around me, because Casey laughed.

She pointed at me. “’Cause when it comes to romance, Mr. Kick-Down-the-Door, you’re dumb as a bag of hammers.”

Lonnie, sitting to my left, laughed out loud.

Admittedly, I realized my skills were deficient when it came to “reading” the female species. I looked at Clay, who was about to say something. “Nope. Don’t. I can’t take it from all sides right now.”
