Chapter 23
Camille's bedroom held no photograph of him.
Malcolm noticed because some guilty part of him had expected proof that he remained hidden inside her life. Instead he saw a room built without his absence in mind: low walnut bed, blue linen, two novels on the nightstand, a reading chair beneath the window.
Camille stood before him and unbuttoned her blouse.
He forgot every prepared thought.
She revealed a black lace bra, soft stomach, full hips beneath tailored trousers. Silver threaded the curls falling around her shoulders. Nothing about her asked to be compared with the woman he had known. This body carried decades he had not witnessed and pleasure he had no right to presume.
"Say something," she said.
"I am deciding whether language is adequate."
"Broadcaster in crisis."
"You are beautiful. I want to touch you everywhere. I am also trying not to make that sound like a closing argument."
Her smile was warm and nervous. "Come here."
Malcolm crossed the room. Camille took his hand and placed it against her bare waist.
"Ask before anything new," she said. "I will too."
"Yes."
He kissed her. Her skin warmed beneath his hand. When his thumb brushed the underside of her breast, she made a quiet sound and pushed closer.
"May I take off your bra?"
"Yes."
The clasp opened. Camille let the lace fall. Malcolm looked without disguising hunger. Her breasts were full, natural, one slightly lower than the other. She did not cross her arms.
"Touch me," she said.
He cupped her, thumbs moving over tightening nipples. Camille's breath caught. She opened his shirt and pushed it from his shoulders, fingers exploring the thick plane of his chest, the small surgical marks near his shoulder, the softer line at his waist.
"You are staring too," he murmured.
"Historical reciprocity."
She kissed the scar below his collarbone. Malcolm closed his eyes.
Clothing came away by agreement and in stages. Shoes first. His trousers while seated so the knee did not twist. Camille knelt to pull the fabric over his feet, then looked up between his thighs with enough desire to erase any possibility of pity.
"Comfortable?" she asked.
"Yes. Very turned on. Slight pull behind the knee. No need to stop."
"Tell me if that changes."
She stood and removed her trousers. Black lace briefs framed the full curve of her hips. Malcolm reached for her, then paused.
"May I?"
"Yes."
He drew her between his knees and kissed her stomach. Camille's fingers entered his salt-and-pepper hair. He traced the edge of lace with his mouth, breathing in orange blossom and the clean heat of her.
"Do you want my mouth?" he asked.
Her grip tightened. "Yes."
Malcolm eased the briefs down. Camille stepped out of them without looking away. He kissed the inside of one thigh, then the other, giving her time to change the answer.
"Still yes?"
"Malcolm. Yes."
He tasted her.
Camille gasped and braced one hand against his shoulder. Malcolm held her hips without restraining them, learning the pressure she wanted from each sound and correction. When his knee protested, he shifted onto the edge of the bed and asked her to lie back.
"Better angle," he said.
"Show me."
He did.
Camille opened beneath him, one hand in his hair, the other clutching blue linen. He used his tongue slowly, then more firmly when she asked. Pleasure gathered without youth's frantic need to prove itself. Her thighs trembled around his shoulders.
"There," she said. "Don't change it."
Malcolm kept the exact rhythm until her body tightened and she came with his name broken across two breaths.
He rested his cheek against her thigh afterward, breathing hard.
Camille touched his face. "Come up here."
Malcolm moved carefully. She met him halfway, kissing him with her taste still on his mouth. Her hand closed around his erection, firm enough to pull a groan from him.
"Is this good?"
"Yes. Slower or I will embarrass myself quickly."
"At our age, efficiency is not embarrassment."
"I waited twenty years. I want poor efficiency."
She laughed against his shoulder and stroked him more slowly.
They had agreed to go without a condom after exchanging test results and confirming exclusivity. Camille reached into the nightstand for lubricant, placed it in Malcolm's hand, and guided him through what felt good now.
"I want you inside me," she said.
"Position? My knee is better if you are on top or if we lie on our sides."
"On top first. Tell me if the bend is wrong."
Malcolm lay back with his left leg extended at an angle. Camille straddled him, full body warm above his. She took his erection and rubbed him through her wetness, watching his face.
"Still want this?" she asked.
"Yes. Completely."
She lowered herself.
The first tight heat of her nearly ended him. Malcolm gripped her hips and stopped.
"Too much?" Camille asked.
"No. Give me a second. You feel..."
He lacked a sentence.
Her eyes softened without teasing. "We have time."
The words undid him more than urgency could have.
Camille took him deeper when he nodded. They moved slowly, learning changed bodies through direct questions. She shifted the angle. He bent his right knee for leverage and kept the left extended. When pressure became pain, he said so. Camille adjusted without making the moment fragile.
Pleasure built again. Malcolm watched her ride him, breasts moving, curls loose, expression fierce and unguarded. He touched her between them.
"Yes," she breathed. "Exactly."
She came around him, body tightening, and Malcolm followed with a rough sound he could not control. Camille leaned down and kissed him through it.
They stayed joined until sensation softened.
Afterward, Malcolm turned onto his side. Camille brought a warm cloth without performing care as devotion. They cleaned up, drank water, and returned to bed beneath a light quilt.
His knee throbbed. He told her.
"Medication? Ice?"
"Ice for ten minutes. Medication not due."
She brought a wrapped pack and set a timer. Malcolm positioned it himself.
"This is extremely seductive," he said.
"The timer has boundaries."
"Naturally."
Camille lay beside him, one leg over his good thigh. The intimacy after sex felt more dangerous than nakedness.
"I used to believe giving you up proved I loved you," Malcolm said.
Her body became still.
"It proved you could suffer," she replied. "Those are not the same thing."
"I know. Or I'm beginning to."
"What can you ask for now?"
He looked at her. The answer should have been forgiveness, permanence, the right to stay.
"May I sleep here tonight?"
Camille considered the actual request.
"Yes. I want you to."
The timer sounded. Malcolm removed the ice pack. They turned out the light.
In darkness, Camille placed his hand over her heart.
Sex had not repaired the missing truth.
It had made the person he was risking more real.
Malcolm woke at three with pain along the outside of his knee and Camille's hand resting on his stomach.
For one disoriented second, he believed they were twenty-nine in the apartment with bad heat. Then the mattress was better, his body older, and silver showed in Camille's hair against the dark pillow.
He moved the leg carefully.
Camille woke. "Pain?"
"Four. Maybe five. I need to stand."
She removed her hand and turned on the low lamp. Malcolm sat at the edge of the bed until the joint accepted weight.
"Do you want company?" she asked.
"Yes, but not help unless I ask."
Camille wrapped herself in a robe and followed him to the kitchen. He walked slowly, naked except for briefs, no camera posture left to protect.
They drank water beneath the stove light. Malcolm stretched the leg through the range his therapist had taught him.
"Sex did not damage it," he said. "Staying still afterward is usually worse."
"You do not have to defend the activity."
"I know. I am giving information because I want another time."
Her mouth curved. "Useful motive disclosure."
When they returned to bed, Camille sat against the headboard.
"Tell me something unromantic," she said.
"I own seven nearly identical black suits because stylists believe consistency is a personality."
"Worse."
"I once paid a man to organize my pantry and never learned where he put salt."
"There you are."
He asked the same of her.
"I abandon wet towels on the reading chair," she said. "Julian considered it evidence civilization was failing."
"I can survive towels."
"Do not make promises in bed."
"Good rule."
They settled on their sides facing each other.
"I do not forgive you for twenty years ago because we had good sex," Camille said.
"I know."
"And I do not trust your current custody decision because you made me come."
"I know."
"The fact that I need to say it makes me angry."
Malcolm touched the sheet between them rather than her. "Then keep saying what needs air. I will not call repetition punishment."
Camille moved closer by choice and placed his hand back over her heart.
They slept again with pleasure true and the withheld order equally true.
Before sleep returned, Camille asked about Alicia.
"Not for comparison," she said. "I do not want details. I want to know whether being here betrays any grief you have not respected."
Malcolm considered. "No. Alicia and I loved each other. We stopped being married before we stopped being kind. I grieved the life we built, not a secret hope of reversing the divorce. She knows you are back."
"Does she approve?"
"She refuses the role."
"I may like her."
"Most people do. It is irritating."
Camille told him Julian knew too.
"He called me a weather system," Malcolm said.
"He has a gift for scale."
No jealousy entered. Their later marriages were not obstacles in a story about first love. They were evidence that both had lived, failed differently, and learned outside each other.
Malcolm touched the edge of the quilt. "Do you regret choosing no children?"
Camille's face cooled.
"That was badly asked," he said immediately. "You already told me it was a choice. I was trying to understand whether the public commentary around us touches a wound. I should have asked what support you want if people attack the choice."
She studied him. "I do not regret it. I regret how often people treat certainty from a woman as provisional until age closes the door they imagined. If the public attacks, do not defend me by saying I would have been a wonderful mother. Say nothing unless I ask."
"Agreed."
"And Jordan is not the child I missed. She is herself."
"Yes."
The repair happened before resentment had to grow around it.
Camille switched off the lamp. "Now sleep."
Malcolm lay beside her with a strange gratitude for the mistakes they could name while small.
The morning after their first intimacy, Malcolm changed the sheets while Camille showered. He did not summon staff. He found the linen closet, failed to identify the correct size once, and laughed when she emerged wrapped in a towel.
"A legend defeated by fitted corners," she said.
"They are malicious engineering."
Camille helped only after he asked. They made the bed together, then reviewed the privacy agreement over coffee because desire had not expired its terms.
No photographs. No shared location posting. Health information remained private. Either could ask for separate nights without explanation becoming accusation.
Malcolm signed the revised page where they had added house staff notice protocols.
The person he was risking became more real through laundry, signatures, and Camille's hair drying silver in morning light.
He did not need the ordinary scene to become a symbol.
He wanted more of it anyway.
Before sleep, Camille asked Malcolm to turn on the bedside lamp. Darkness felt intimate, but she wanted to see his face while they named the last boundaries.
"Testing current?" she asked.
"Yes. Results available if you want to see them."
"Mine too. Contraception remains condoms tonight. No assumption about later."
"Agreed."
"If your knee changes, tell me before it becomes endurance."
"Agreed. If you want to stop, at any point—"
"I will say so. You may too."
They opened a new condom together, checked the date, and laughed when Malcolm's broadcaster hands became briefly clumsy.
The care did not cool desire. It sharpened it by removing the need to guess.
Later, Camille lay with her back against his chest while his left leg rested on a pillow. He asked before pulling the blanket higher.
"Yes," she murmured.
Small permission followed large pleasure.
By morning, she understood why safety could feel erotic at forty-eight: not because risk vanished, but because neither person had to surrender voice in order to be wanted.
